Tasty... - Edit
Popped in here for lunch and had a delicious and filling meal. The vegan burger was great and my wife loved her GF vegan pumpkin gnocchi. We split the vegan potato salad.
They had a nice assortment of vegan treats in the case, but we were too full for dessert.
Great staff and good coffee.
Pros: GF and vegan options, Friendly staff, Laid back atmosphere
Cons: Doesn't seem to be much else around the cafe

vegan melt for the win!! - Edit
This place is pretty cute! Formica tables, mismatching salt and peppers, little flower pots on the table in a cute old house that was probably a corner store in the day.
It's the type of place vegan food use to be before it became lucrative for hippies to open vegan friendly health food stores and cash in on the subculture.
The coffee was ace, the food was good.
The vegan melt was the best!!
I absolutely recommend this place.
One of the staff members probably shouldn't be in the service industry or was cooked or coming down, who knows but the European chick was rad and the young vegan guy was super helpful!

beat street - Edit
we went to the beat street on a very warm and windy sunday afternoon. the atmosphere was fine. it's what i expected from what it looks like outside. the guy that served us at the counter was nice. there were a few vegan options including a dessert or two. we both had the corn fritters, which were delicious (and vegan of course). the soy latte and soy chai we ordered weren't very good though and that was a disappointment. even though they weren't very busy, the food delivery was slow. the outside patio area was nice and quiet. if it was any less windy, it would have been really busy and noisy. we enjoyed it as it was. it did seem a bit expensive though: two corn fritters and two soy beverages came to $32.
Pros: lovely outside area, excellent food, friendly staff
Cons: poor coffee skills, slow delivery of food

Good vegan options - Edit
Beat Street was a lucky find in Christchurch. The options for vegans are pretty limited in this city. Beat Street serves meat, but they try to offer more sustainable choices. They always have a few vegan options in their "ready made" section. I got a piece of vegan pizza which was really unique (lots of veggies and beans as well,) to-go, so it was cold when I ate it and it was still really good. Would have been great if it was hot. I also got the vegan "pie" which had an indian flavor with garbanzo's and curry. It was tasty as well. I also got a nice hot Chai tea with soy milk and a vegan brownie, which were both awesome. Their vegan choices change regularly, but I imagine they will all be good. Fun atmosphere and friendly staff. Free wi-fi with the requested code. The only think negative I can say is that the vegan options must change daily. I first visited in the evening, after having just had an early dinner elsewhere. They had an amazing huge multilayered vegan casserole type thing, with tons of veggies, pesto, and a garlic aioli. The young man behind the counter said it was awesome. But since I'd just eaten, I said I would return the next day to get that. But when I arrived the next day it was gone! (Even though they were almost closing when I was there the prior day.) So if you see something you like, get it for take-away! It will probably be gone the next day.
Pros: Good vegan choices, Friendly staff, free wi-fi
