Best Vegan Comfort Food - Edit
Homey food. Homey atmosphere. I went to Bean a couple years back with my dad, and I remembered loving it. I took my best friend to dinner here a week ago just to see how she liked it. When I tell you she was FAWNING over the food!! And I’m the vegetarian, not her! She got the Korean bbq tofu burger, and I got the jackfruit bbq carnitas tacos. It was just as good as I remembered. This place is really special, because it’s so hard to come by fully vegan comfort food. I LOVE bbq, and this is only place I can find any good jackfruit bbq in the Charlotte area. To be fair, a better location would serve the place well. I could see it doing very well off in a more frequented/growing area of town like South End or NoDa. It would be very sad to see this gem go. Much better than Luna’s Living Kitchen in my opinion (sorry Luna’s), unless you’re looking for super healthy vegan food, you’ll find that at Luna’s. IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR VEGAN COMFORT FOOD IN THE CHARLOTTE AREA, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!!!!

Overall, Pretty Good - Edit
I loved that Bean served only vegan dishes; it made it soo easy to order! The pimento cheese and mac and cheese weren't the best, but don't let that discourage you. The Good Burger and the fried pickles with vegan ranch was definitely my favorite!

Sad - Edit
Bean in Asheville was a nice sunny place. This place still has the adorable pig statue but that is about all that reminds me of the Asheville location I loved. I wanted to go to the store and bring back baking soda and vinegar to scrub the tiles around the bar. I have had amazing vegan food in low rent locations. Bean was good in Asheville. The tater tot casserole was ok. The nash potatoes and herb gravy were ok. The noch mac and cheese was a no. I knew it was noch mac and cheese. But it has went down hill. The cheesecake was still good. The service was friendly. We got iced up diet Pepsi and no refill. The fries are not edible. It breaks my heart and I wanted to take the adorable pig statue from this place.

Waffles May be Worth the Poor Service... - Edit
Here's the thing, I love Bean. Even though there are some definite issues that need to be addressed, I would be so upset if they weren't there one day. So, with that, here it is:
Read moreThey serve vegan junk food. It's fried, greasy, not good for you, and delicious. I stumbled in there about two months into my vegan journey, dying for something fried. It was a lifesaver. Let me tell you. I have a particular affinity for the bean bowl, fried tofu finger sandwich, and waffles. Oooh, the waffles.
I have a crazy sweet tooth and wanted their desserts to be awesome. Instead, I'd say they are hit and miss. Their cheesecakes are almost always delicious. Their chocolate cake is also very good. However, I think the rest of their cakes taste like flavorless paste. Don't do it!
The thing I dislike the most is the inconsistent service. And, even more than that, after suggesting it to a group of friends, having to apologize to my guests for it. It's always when I bring people with me that the service is extra slow and the servers are pretty inattentive and, at times, down right unfriendly. I tip well. I'm not needy or complicated, and even if I were, this would be unacceptable. It is an ongoing issue. It happens regularly and that's crappy. Please fix it!
I worked in the service industry for a long time. I know how hard the work can be. But the thing is, veganism is becoming more and more popular. There are more options now than two years ago and there will be even more options in another two years. If issues aren't addressed, people will choose to go elsewhere and that's unfortunate.
Pros: waffles - brunch, in general, vegan market , fried tofu finger sandwich, bean bowl, and crabby
Cons: service is the worst. , tater tot casserole is gross, mac and cheese is also gross

Amazing - Edit
Usually I get takeout from here and it’s always quick and the staff is friendly. The food is DELICIOUS and even stays warm for the ~15 minute ride home. The small grocery area where I can purchase vegan items for home is a godsend for when I’ve run out of some of my pantry vegan staples at home.

Bury me in fried pickles - Edit
Seriously, keep those fried pickles coming! This place is a bit of a "greasy" diner, so come here for all your comfort food cravings and not your juice cleanse. I had the pulled "pork", milkshake and fried pickles and it was awesome! I also took some cupcakes to go and they were delicious. The service was excellent as well and I like that they have a small area where you can pick up some vegan groceries.

Can’t be beat for vegan comfort food! - Edit
Great selection of comfort food but healthy dishes too. Desserts and milkshakes are fantastic, & their brunch is the best!! I am so addicted to their carrot bacon! Small grocery selection with a nice variety too, so you can shop while you’re waiting for your food - love it!! Go with your non-veg friends and they’ll be sure to be impressed! Friendly owners too, and they will be franchising - yay!!

Vegan Junk Food at its Finest - Edit
Hate the location, not a fan of the decor and building in general but Bean delivers with a large menu of satisfying, soul food all of which is plant based. It’s nice to have it and options like fried pickles, pimento cheese, Mac & cheese etc but it’s more of a guilty pleasure, dirty Saturday night experience for me. Our waitress Anusha was excellent!

So many options - Edit
Had cheesesteak hoagie which was one of best vegan sandwiches in be ever had. Also table had two burgers/ the Good burger and the cowboy burger. Both very good! We had the Mac and cheese as a side but wasn’t too impressed with that. Also the tater tot casserole which was just ok. I thought it would Whole tots but it was more like a succotash 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️. Definitely would come again!!

I ordered the scramble with bacon, grits and biscuit and it was great! Some of the foods are a little too heavy, like their dinner items, but I really like their breakfast. Kitty Cat Pie is also sooo good!

Good, BUT.... - Edit
Food was fine. Burgers, bbq pulled “pork” sandwich, philly cheez steak...all tasty. We overlooked the dingy location to give this place a try and we are glad we did, but...cleanliness is a major issue here. The place was straight up gross. The curtains were really dirty (and right up against our table, so touching us) and the floors were really sticky everywhere we walked. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our meal. To my surprise they charged us an automatic 18% “party” fee for our little family of 5. I’m sorry, but 5 people does not make for a demanding workload, especially when the place was not busy. We were going to tip them well anyway but the audacity of it left a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully they’ll rethink that policy. Will not be back. There are lots of other places to get a decent vegan burgers (including Burger King)!

Best burger we’ve had - Edit
We went for dinner last night and had their “chorizo queso,” jalapeño burger and brownie sundae. Everything was absolutely amazing. The food is comfort food and it says so in the building so it isn’t a place for very light fare although they had salads and a couple of lighter things on the menu. We were blown away by how good everything was. The ice cream was soft serve. Which I have never seen. The service was good, although be prepared for a little wait. But then good food takes time!

Needs serious improvement - Edit
The sign prominently placed that says food cannot be sent back is ominous. We ordered six items and nothing was great. Everything had some really basic culinary errors. The gravy is actually terrible and that’s sad, decent gravy is easy for an amateur cook. Won’t come back.

Great when you’re in the mood for vegan junk food - Edit
It’s greasy so be prepared to be super full and probably not feel your best after. That said, it’s delicious, vegan junk food at its finest. And you CAN order salads if you’re trying to be healthier. They have a lot of choices, I’ve liked basically everything I’ve tried. They have vegan soft serve ice cream! Totally worth checking this place out.

Worst customer service ever - Edit
Other than the time I was served prosciutto when I was vegetarian, I had the most awful experience I've ever had at a restaurant at Bean. I appreciate that the restaurant is vegan and the food really is very tasty, but that's the only good part. The service was excruciatingly slow. When we were finally able to place our order, I asked if my food could be made to-go and be prepared with the appetizers our table had ordered since I was in a hurry. Our waitress said that would be no problem. My to-go food did not come out with the appetizers. It did not even come out when my friends got their food. I asked about my order a couple times and was told it would be ready shortly. My order finally came out after everyone at our table was finished eating and I was very late. I went to the register to quickly pay and leave. I told the owner/manager about my problem. He asked what I wanted him to do about it, didn't listen to my reply, but immediately made excuses and became defensive. He told me I shouldn't come to his restaurant on a Sunday if I was in a hurry. He told me my food came out late because the restaurant was so busy. I have never experienced a rudeness like this as a restaurant customer. At that point, I was so ready to leave and he was not being helpful, so I asked to pay for my food. Apparently, it was very difficult to separate out my order from the rest of the bill, even though I had asked for a separate check when I ordered, so I spent another 20 minutes waiting to pay. I will never go back to Bean in Charlotte because of that man. He obviously has some severe issues and does not know how to run a restaurant properly. I feel sorry for all his employees and future customers.

Definitely Overrated - Edit
I took an Uber from my hotel (roughly $17 away) to this place based on the Happy Cow reviews expecting some tasty vegan cuisine. I received sub par service and the same goes for the food. The waitress was a little unkempt (That always disturbs me.), didn't smile, and appeared annoyed when I asked for suggestions. I made the mistake of asking if the shakes tasted similar to milkshakes, and she felt the need to explain why the vegan shakes were better for the animals.
Read moreThat was unnecessary and unhelpful information. Needless to say, after eating the just okay tofu sandwich and Mac and cheese, I opted to save my money on the shake and use it for the $17 Uber ride back to my hotel.
Pros: Variety of menu options
Cons: Unfriendly staff, Food was just okay
