Good food, bad employee - Edit

I loved going to Bean, the food has always been excellent and I loved the convenience of the all Vegan market. But Roy who is the co-owner became very rude and unprofessional at us tonight for splitting appetizers when he used to be fine with it when he waited our table the last time we were there. I have never experienced that kind of rudeness from a restaurant. And it is sad that it came from a VEGAN restaurant where you expect kindness and compassion. And we were very kind and civil. He thought we were being complicated which is not true. I will not be back at this location.

Pros: Delicious food, Tiny Vegan market, Nice location

Bean is Great - Edit

I know there have been a lot of negative service reviews here, but I've been eating here consistently for 4.5 years.... and I love Bean.

The owner/managers Roy and Charlie have always been very nice to us. The staff rotates often and that can make it a little inconsistent, but we've never had any experiences similar to what has been described here.

What we have noticed is a lot more foot traffic over the past 18 months, maybe that is driving some of the bad experiences for others.

Give them a chance, the food is great comfort food. It may not be very juice bar vegan, but it satisfies what they aim to do.

Best dishes: Bean bowls, tofu fingers, brunch, and the reuben.

Pros: Fantastic menu, I've eaten every item, Heavy comfort food, Committed to the cause

Cons: Service can vary

1 star!! Horrible place - Edit

This place should be shut down. Horrible customer service, slllloooolwwwww service, dirty and dingy. Waiting 45 mins for food that NEVER arrived And NO ONE came over to talk to us. And everything is fried!! We will NEVER be back.

Pros: zero

Cons: dirty, long wait, and customer service

Mostly delicious - Edit

We had the crabby dip to start and 2 burgers: Cowboy and Bacon Cheese. All were amazing! But avoid the Mac and cheese like the plague. It is dreadful.
Service was a little subpar. But all in all, it was a good meal.

Pros: everything is vegan, burgers are amazing

Cons: service inattentive, mac and cheese awful

expensive but worth it - Edit

I had pimento cheese and a teriyaki tofu sandwich. It was flavorful and the servings are large. The restaurant was a little dirty and the floor was sticky but if u want delicious food, look past it.

Pros: large serving, totally vegan

Cons: expensive , kind of dirty

Processed, But Awesome - Edit

If you are looking for unprocessed food, this might not be the best option BUT for those of us who are whole foods or super health-conscious, they DO offer some great options though!!! (Avoid the burgers, order options like jackfruit tacos and side options like beans and rice or collards. They literally had the best beans and rice I've ever had, I have no idea how they flavored it. It's a simple thing but they did it very, very well.) That being said, their processed stuff tastes GOOD and their menu is ENORMOUS. They do amazing vegan versions of every type of meat/cheese dish you used to love. There are plenty of options for all types of vegetarians, vegans, and will make any meat-eater in your party VERY happy. The service was great as well. I highly recommend trying this restaurant out especially over others in the area!!

Pros: Price, Variety, Something for everyone

Cons: Too few whole food options

BEST FOOD WE HAD IN NC - Edit

now I'm going to start with the bad so I can get to the good. Yes, the service is not great they might forget about you(like they did with us) or take way too long and that is made clear in the other comments. Now thats the way the food was BOMB! It was just good vegan food it was good american food. and if you are there YOU NEED to get the raspberry cake if was life changing ! everything we had was so good and by far the best meal we had while visiting North Carolina. Again I would of gave it 5 stars but unfortunately, the service was poor.

Pros: Delicious vegan American food , Pretty affordable

Cons: poor service , slow

Good food - Edit

My first time at a vegan restaurant and I was so excited. The food definitely didn't disappoint. Love the cool interior and the store with hard to find vegan items. The employees however could stand to be a little friendlier.

Pros: Awesome food, The store

Cons: Unfriendly employees

Waffles May be Worth the Poor Service... - Edit

Here's the thing, I love Bean. Even though there are some definite issues that need to be addressed, I would be so upset if they weren't there one day. So, with that, here it is:

They serve vegan junk food. It's fried, greasy, not good for you, and delicious. I stumbled in there about two months into my vegan journey, dying for something fried. It was a lifesaver. Let me tell you. I have a particular affinity for the bean bowl, fried tofu finger sandwich, and waffles. Oooh, the waffles.

I have a crazy sweet tooth and wanted their desserts to be awesome. Instead, I'd say they are hit and miss. Their cheesecakes are almost always delicious. Their chocolate cake is also very good. However, I think the rest of their cakes taste like flavorless paste. Don't do it! 

The thing I dislike the most is the inconsistent service. And, even more than that, after suggesting it to a group of friends, having to apologize to my guests for it. It's always when I bring people with me that the service is extra slow and the servers are pretty inattentive and, at times, down right unfriendly. I tip well. I'm not needy or complicated, and even if I were, this would be unacceptable. It's is an ongoing issue. It happens regularly and that's crappy. Please fix it!

I worked in the service industry for a long time. I know how hard the work can be. But the thing is, veganism is becoming more and more popular. There are more options now than two years ago and there will be even more options in another two years. If issues aren't addressed, people will choose to go elsewhere and that's unfortunate.

Pros: waffles - brunch, in general, vegan market , fried tofu finger sandwich, bean bowl, and crabby

Cons: service is the worst. , tater tot casserole is gross, mac and cheese is also gross

Best vegan food, bad service - Edit

It is sad that a vegan place has this much unfriendly staff working. I don't expect someone to be too friendly but at least don't be snippy while serving paying customers. Food is amazing and that is the only good point about this place. This restaurant has very gloomy atmosphere and that was during the day. I guess no one washes windows. If I get back it would be just for great food taste otherwise I would try to avoid since it is too expensive for such service.

Pros: Good taste of food, none, none

Cons: Costly, Bad service, Mac and cheese not so great

Worst customer service ever - Edit

Other than the time I was served prosciutto when I was vegetarian, I had the most awful experience I've ever had at a restaurant at Bean. I appreciate that the restaurant is vegan and the food really is very tasty, but that's the only good part. The service was excruciatingly slow. When we were finally able to place our order, I asked if my food could be made to-go and be prepared with the appetizers our table had ordered since I was in a hurry. Our waitress said that would be no problem. My to-go food did not come out with the appetizers. It did not even come out when my friends got their food. I asked about my order a couple times and was told it would be ready shortly. My order finally came out after everyone at our table was finished eating and I was very late. I went to the register to quickly pay and leave. I told the owner/manager about my problem. He asked what I wanted him to do about it, didn't listen to my reply, but immediately made excuses and became defensive. He told me I shouldn't come to his restaurant on a Sunday if I was in a hurry. He told me my food came out late because the restaurant was so busy. I have never experienced a rudeness like this as a restaurant customer. At that point, I was so ready to leave and he was not being helpful, so I asked to pay for my food. Apparently, it was very difficult to separate out my order from the rest of the bill, even though I had asked for a separate check when I ordered, so I spent another 20 minutes waiting to pay. I will never go back to Bean in Charlotte because of that man. He obviously has some severe mental health issues and does not know how to run a restaurant properly. I feel sorry for all his employees.

Pros: tasty, all vegan, small vegan shop inside the restaurant

Cons: horrible customer service , understaffed , owner is Satan

5 star food 0 stars management - Edit

Tonight me and several of my friends went to Bean Vegan Cuisine, a few people tried to split the cost off appetizers (which we have done before there). The waitress said it was possible and but we were told later by the owner I think he is? That it was not possible so they (the ones splitting the appetizers) just decided to put them all on one check.

One of our friends went to talk to him and the other seven of us sat there and continued eating, didn't even hear the conversation our friend was having with the owner. After she talked to him she seemed frustrated but then had to leave to start driving back home.

So later the waitress came and passed out checks, we all put our cards in and all that and the waitress came and took them.
Next thing we know the owner comes over to our table and says that we didn't pay for the appetizers... and then my card was the one inside that check thing. I told him that was my card this man started being horribly rude to us all. He was basically accusing us of playing around and switching up everyone's checks and cards which is like why would anyone do that?

Literally the most awful way I've ever seen anyone deal with a situation in my life. He was telling us that our friend that talked to him earlier was difficult and that "whatever you guys are trying to do here is ridiculous". He then kept going on and on saying things that were definitely not okay to say to customers, especially when the rest is us there didn't do anything wrong AT ALL.

Someone then told him we wouldn't be coming back and he said "that's fine with me you can take your business somewhere else".
Never in my entire life have I ever been treated like that by someone who is supposed to be in charge. I'm not sure what exactly our friend said to him in the one on one conversation but whatever it was that is absolutely no excuse to take it out and be angry and rude to the rest of us like he was.

It's really sad because I know people who work there and have worked there, and to them I'm so sorry you have or had to work for such an incredibly mean spirited human. You would think running a vegan place you would have some sort of compassion.

So yeah, won't be going back to Bean. That being said Zizi's Awesome Vegan 2 Go in university is where it's at so if you want yummy vegan food that is run by someone who does not have the temperament of a seven year old.

Pros: The food is good.

Cons: The owner is rude. , Service is always slow. , Hella expensive.

Disappointing - Edit

Read the negative reviews on Facebook. It's telling that the owners don't even bother to respond. I hate to say anything bad about a business online, but I ate here for the first time and wasn't impressed. They rely on Daiya cheese for everything and the food is really greasy. The whole operation felt really uninspired. Friends warned me it wasn't good, but I trusted all the positive reviews here. Paid $15 (including tip) for a lousy Reuben sandwich and fries. Left feeling very disappointed.

First Time - Edit

My husband and I ordered take-out during our visit to Charlotte. We ordered a variety of items since it was our first time. The items were: the cowboy burger, quesadilla, fishless filet sandwich, and the BBQ jackfruit sandwich, along with a side of fries, mac and cheese, and red beans and rice. We absolutely LOVED the fishless filet and cowboy sandwich. Those two are definitely must-haves! The BBQ jackfruit didn't have much flavor to us. The mac and cheese was a little on the sweet side in my opinion. The red beans and rice lacked that spicy flavor I was hoping for. Overall, the experience was good. If we lived in Charlotte, this would most definitely be one of our favorite restaurants to dine. The service was good and everyone was very kind.

Great alternative - Edit

I have visited Bean several times during my visits to Charlotte. The desserts are my favorite by far but many of the entrees are delicious too. The chili cheeseburger special was amazing. If you have friends or family that are not vegan but enjoy burgers, this is a good restaurant where everyone can be satisfied.

the absolute best - Edit

Two words: cowboy burger!!! Guys, if you're looking for the best place to spend a cheat meal or looking for the best burger in life...GO TO BEAN. Being vegan never tasted so good. They also have their own little vegan market in the restaurant which is pretty darn cool. Get the cookie dough, and don't bake them because cookies are over rated ?

Delicious SAD (Standard American DIet) Vegan food - Edit

Great veganized American food...like the unhealthy, tasty stuff without the cruelty. I opt for the jalapeno cheddar burger (the fried jalapenos should be offered as their own appetizer) and tater tot casserole or kale for the days i need greens. Also a big fan of the buffalo tofu fingers.

The Herc Bowl is the bomb. It has most of my favorite things (BBQ Soy Curls over Home Fries with Spicy Mayo, Steamed Kale, and a Biscuit).

They also have a vegan store to stock up on all your vegan food needs.

Pros: All vegan, Vegan store, Buffalo tofu

Very good - Edit

After battling terrible traffic like other users mentioned, and a long wait time time after we ordered, our food arrived and we were happy with it. Nice to have so many vegan options. The best part of the restaurant is the vegan grocery shop - so many specialty items you really can't find many places. Decor is unique too. We've been to both this one and the Asheville location. Enjoyed both. Happy to have these vegan options for comfort food items.

Great food/Not so great service - Edit

I have been coming to Bean for about a several months now. The food is delicious, my non vegan family loves it as well. The teriyaki tofu fingers are my favorite along with the fried pickles. The service is not very good. Every time I come, we will have several people waiting on our table and it always takes forever to get our ticket. The wait staff is not always that attentive and I end up apologizing to the people I bring along with me. The staff is friendly but they really need to work on their service skills.

Pros: Awesome Appetizers, Love the small Grocery Shop located inside

Cons: Slow service

horrible - Edit

I've tried this place twice, hoped that the first time was a bad day, but the food was still horrible, taste like the poured a bucket of salt on all that I had. The person that took my order kept saying "if you are not use to vegan food you may have trouble with the taste", I explained to her that I have been a vegan since 2008. I travel with my job, and always go to Happy Cow to see what's close to where I am. Noticed that people that were coming in after me were leaving, went up to ask after waiting 45 mins for my food, when asked if the boxes I was looking at was mine, the person said "yeah, but I didn't take your order, so I didn't know who that was".

Pros: good hours of operation

Cons: poor service, horrible food, salty.
