Vegan options, but seating is shared with two restaurant names

We were looking for this place, but it is shared with another restaurant name Sweet Basil, which serves meat. I think there might be three restaurant names. There is a separate menu for each restaurant name. Passing by the kitchen, we thought that space looked clean. "You can order from either menu. Any item on the meat version can be made vegan." We just ordered from the BVK menu. It was a hot day and we were under the shade of a grape vine pergola where it was cool. Cloth napkins and tablecloth. Food was very good with lots of vegetables. The white rice came in the form of a large star with a layer of delicious black rice on top.

Pros: It has a full vegan menu, Lots of nice touches, e.g. cloth napkins, etc.

Cons: Con,Or just weird? Two+ restaurants inseating [censored]

100% Vegan Restaurant!

Basil Vegan Kitchen is consistently available for evening/late-night delivery, offers an extensive menu of vegan options, & is priced in the range of what I'd consider affordable Thai food in the current landscape. While their soups & curries are mostly outstanding, the lack of consistency across the full menu prevents me from rating them higher. However, I look forward to sticking to my main items (Red Curry, Pumpkin Curry, Tom Yum, etc.) whenever I feel like ordering.

Pretty Thai Thai food

I get that people are disappointed that this isn't an all vegan restaurant. If you're okay with that I think this place is definitely worth a try. Their prices are a bit more reasonable than some other Thai restaurants around town and their Thai food is prepared pretty close to the food I ate in Thailand. I'm not Thai, but I lived there for 2 years and ate a lot all around the country. Of course, there's not one way to make any one dish, but this place just has some of the Thai details that others miss while still offering a vegan version. There's so much competition for Thai food in Portland, I feel like I can be picky. For example, I want sticky rice served with my papaya salad, I want the papaya salad to be a bit fishy, I want to be able to order laarb and it to have the right herb, salt, and acid balance, I want to have more than one choice of curry, I don't want unseasoned steamed broccoli in any dish ever, etc.

Great Thai food!

Knowledgeable staff, easy to order vegan. Food is flavorful and delicious. Pad Kee Mao and Panang were awesome.

Name is misleading. This is a seafood and meat restaurant with a vegan menu.

Name is misleading, sadly.
This is a seafood and meat restaurant with a vegan menu but the food is cooked in the same kitchen (they claim separate pans) and if you are eating next to non-vegans, the smell of the fish sauce is disgusting. Highly recommend take out for actual vegans.

Pros: lots of vegan choices

Cons: food NOT cooked in a vegan kitchen.

Good food!

We ordered takeout from this place and food really good! There is lot of options too. However, pad Thai and fried rice was filled half the container with vegetables. We hardly got any rice or noodles and just had to eat veggies. They definitely need to reduce the vegetable quantity!!

Tasteless

I had a "fried" tofu dish, but tofu came in fresh. I really like tofu and luckily it was Ota Tofu, but the dish just came in a watery sauce. Very very bland. Wont go back

Pros: Ota tofu

Cons: Bland, Misleading

Good food, make sure ordering vegan

As others have said, they have non vegan menu items on the vegan menu. Nevertheless, the food was good quality and tasty

Some confusing aspects, but a worthwhile stop!

Make sure you ask for the vegan menu! And a couple things on that even have egg, but the food and service are great!

Misleading

This place isn’t a vegan- it is the same business & kitchen as Sweet Basil Thai so if another comment said they got chicken, it’s probably correct. Food was very very bland, tofu was bland & soggy. I’d rather drive across town to Kati which is the same price.

Best pumpkin curry I’ve ever had

This place is incredible. Not sure what that other comment is about, this is an all vegan Thai place that does not serve chicken

I bite into a piece of fried chicken at a vegan restaurant. Pretty obvious on what my review was about. First time in four years not something I was very happy to have happen to me.
Don’t try to discredit what happened to me. You don’t know my experience, I have texts from the owner at the business about what happened. I have worked in the restaurant industry my whole life and would never lie about something negative about a restaurant.

I never stated the food was bad just about what happened to me.

It's NOT all vegan. The menu has eggs on it. They say they are all vegetarian. I just called and asked to make sure it wasn't a "vegan egg" and asked why they call themselves a vegan kitchen when it is in fact a vegetarian kitchen, and I was told it was because "some customers want vegetarian versions."

If you zoom in on Google Maps, Sweet Basil Thai and Basil Vegan Kitchen appear to be in the same building, so like the description says, they share a kitchen.

Not vegan

I went to try basil vegan for the first time last week. I got a couple items. When you go and order at a restaurant that claims to be vegan you don’t have to worry about there being animal products in your food by accident. I’m went to bite into what I thought was extra fried tempura but turned out to be chicken.
The restaurant apologized and refunded the one dish but any other vegan restaurant would never let something like that happen and would have done more to make the situation better.

This place isn’t vegan, which is why you got chicken. They share a business & kitchen with Sweet Basil which sells animal flesh. Very misleading. 😠
