I used to love Barley - the food was great, the owners friendly, the coffee amazing. I'd been a supporter since day one, until today when they slandered my family simply for posting a poor review.
Read moreThe service at Barley has been going downhill - new staff on front of house with little to no support means that mistakes will happen. Today our order was taken incorrectly and the coffee wasn't up to scratch. This was handled with a quiet chat to one of the owners, and with an honest review posted online.
This was met with an attack from the chef and owner, Matt, online. He accused my family members of bullying the wait staff, being loud and rude, and even damaging his car. None of what he claims took place actually occurred, and I am left sickened by the fact that sharing a once-loved eatery with my family has exposed them to such a vitriolic pack of lies.
The owner of this establishment can cook a great vegan meal, but his relationship with the truth leaves a lot to be desired. There is no reason whatsoever to attack, belittle, and slander customers who are unhappy with their experience. The owner is petty, vindictive, and cruel - the very opposite of the compassion vegans are supposed to embody.

Amazing food, all plant-based and based on kiwi classics (fish and chips, big brekkie, etc.). Their jack fruit nuggets and pies are seriously addictive. Coffees are amazing too. Incredible staff, all super friendly.

Freya is amazing & I am absolutely in love with the cheese steak ciabatta so I hope they keep them on the menu forever 😅😍
I did like the cookies, but then they changed and I don’t like the new ones 😭
Overall though I love this place and will continue visiting them and supporting them because it’s lovely having an all vegan place in palmy!

We stopped for a quick breakfast here and were delighted. Firstly, that had oat milk which is very rare for New Zealand. I had the breakfast burrito which was delicious and my part er had a cold salad from the 'deli' counter. We were tempted by the deserts on display too but we're too full. Great value as well!

Been in Palmerston North for a week and I've tried so much off their menu and I can gladly say not a single thing disappointed. Highly recommend any burger and the pastas are delicious !

Totally plant based menu with lots of plant based milk options which was awesome to see, cabinet food was fairly limited and carb-heavy (breads/pastas/cakes etc), I would have enjoyed a lighter option such as a salad or veges but everything looked nice and there is also a full printed menu to choose from.

Read moreI had the seitan sammie, it was tasty and a good size too. I also had a mocha which was rich, creamy with a great amount of chocolate in it. Come and check this place out, you won’t be disappointed!

This is a good looking modern cafe with lots of natural light at a good location right in the CBD on Church St. Close, easy parking too.
Read moreThe menu is small & I thought the cabinet really needed some salad options (more plants!) but what we tried here was good even if the portions were quite small.
Staff were keen & friendly & the prices were moderate. Plenty of dining space & easy access.
They really need to add more variety with the food & drinks...hopefully that will happen soon.

I have tried several of the cabinet and menu items from Barley, and have been very impressed by all that I have tried including the coffees with almond/coconut milk 😋 as a non vegan I was a bit skeptical but the food at barley blew me away! The staff were all very welcoming and friendly with great service.
