First place we stopped at in Christchurch, really good breakfast, pancakes and their big breakfast option. Very tasty; one of us is Celiac & they were happy to account for that.

Tasty breakfast waffles - Edit
Came for breakfast on our first morning in Christchurch; I had the waffles and my partner the smoothie bowl and we both thoroughly enjoyed! Healthy, tasty, freshly made food by lovely staff. Coffees were tasty too, and it was great to have a selection of plant milks to choose from. Giving four stars as the food was a wee bit expensive, but definitely worth a visit for a treat!

Delicious, Nutritious and all Vegan - Edit
I keep coming back for more from Barefoot Eatery. I have loved all the food/drink I have ordered. So far I have enjoyed a smoothie, smoothie bowl, waffles, lasagna, salads and mochas with different plant mylks. Staff are friendly and helpful, I love the menu and it’s an enjoyable spot to sit down and eat. Sometimes service can be a bit slow when there are lots of customers, which is understandable given there’s limited space and therefore just a few staff working at a time.

Waffles Galore - Edit
If you are going for anything, go for the waffles. Barefoot Eatery is completely plant based and stocked full of delicious meals. It is also refined sugar free and gluten free. The buckwheat waffles are the highlight of the menu and the ultimate gals brunch dish. The housemade nutella is a must have addition. The macadamia milk is nice with the mochas. Great to see lots of alternative milk options on the menu. They also do takeaways if you want to eat on the run. Sometimes they do half price on their juices as well if they are close to expiry.

Good vegan food and treats - Edit
Great to have an all-vegan eatery in The Welder! I’ve enjoyed, so far, the half waffle with lots of fresh fruit, a hazelnut slice, a combination takeaway bowl of various dishes (slaw, hummus, falafel, rice, sweet potato, etc), the Barefoot Burger and the Bounty Bar.

Limited menu a bit disappointing - Edit
We came here for a Sunday lunch and sat down in the amazing space. There’s an open, vibrant feel to the cafe, and plants and features make it really interesting. The menu was reduced when we went there, not uncommon in Aotearoa at the time. They were unable to make the smoothies that were on the menu. I had to really think about what I wanted to eat and we eventually settled for the Garden nourish bowl with falafel (as opposed to beans) and the toasted sandwich. I’d had a discussion with my companion about the risk of falafels being bad, but we had rolled with this decision, only for our concerns to be justified: it was dry and flavourless. My biggest fears became reality when the sandwich arrived and was 90 percent pumpkin. I pushed through and ate it, but it was just another disappointing element of the experience here. I’m sad to be giving a fairly low rating to this place that seemed like it might be quite cool.

Delicious food. - Edit
I've been lucky enough to eat here numerous times and the food is always delicious. The salads are huge and are a taste sensation. Don't resist! There is a menu for hot meals and burgers as well as cabinet food, and lots of decadent sweets. Great coffee. We had hot chocolates last visit, so nice!

Nourishing bowl - Edit
Five star service. Happened to call the place enroute to check they were open. I was informed that the kitchen was closing but they can put my order through on the phone. Was ready when I arrived so worked out perfectly. the moroccan salad with tofu and beans was perfect example of "eating the rainbow" - all good, healthy, nourishing ingredients. Loved the chilled out ambiance and seating around the entire complex.

Breakfast Waffle - Edit
Large and small Waffle size options, really nicely presented but just wished the frozen berries had been defrosted as it made the waffle cold. Otherwise fantastic atmosphere, glad we weren’t in a hurry as it took a good 30 minute wait but the waitress did apologise. Would love to go again and try something else. #Veganuary

Promising! - Edit
Really awesome that this place has opened - chch desperately needs more fully vegan places such as this! My gluten-free friend and I came here for lunch and were so glad we finally could both eat the same things.
Read moreHowever my mushroom toastie from the cabinet took ages to come out (longer than my friend’s kitchen-made waffles), and it was cold when it did come. The bread was rock hard and an arm workout to cut. I know they’re still new so maybe that’s just one bad experience. I’d certainly come back to try it again though!
Second visit: much better experience so now I’m giving this place 4 stars ⭐️

Barefoot and Expectant - Edit
Some reviews below describe the decor of the restaurant as being sparse or overly simplistic. I think that’s unfair. The chairs and tables are pretty simple, it’s true, but some other restaurants are like that too and still have good decor and great food. More importantly, the place is part of a virtually open plan complex almost like a food court but with solid walls between each restaurant section, and one large shared seating area separate from their own seated sections. The whole complex is what is called The Welder. Locals are probably familiar with the large converted warehouse-like building, but as a newbie to town, I had to walk past on the main road a couple of times until I finally noticed the relatively small sign down the side of the building. Being a cold damp drizzly winter’s day, I was by then quite cold and hoping to walk into a warm embracing cosy atmosphere. The place would be awesome in summer, but in winter the twin sliding doors simply suck all the heat out of the middle of the restaurant section immediately.
Read moreThe food is good though, for sure. I really enjoyed the Barefoot Burger. Initially peeved that the burger was obviously structurally too big to gobble with my bare hands, I gave in and used the supplied knife and fork. The sauce and pickled relish garnishes are on the too salty side for my taste, but certainly are entirely scrumptious and go very nicely with the fresh bread buns and fresh slices of tomato. The crunchy roast-dried full leaf green veggies on the side were a surprising delight too.
I’d ordered a small hot macadamia mylk chocolate. It was brought out almost immediately, which was a relief against the gusts of cold breezing around the back of my neck whenever a door opened, but the already rapidly cooling burger didn’t arrive until the chocolate was at least half gone. That was my mistake. Next time, I’ll be sure to be more sensible and just order the larger size as it was so delicious, but also provided a sensibly mild sweet counterpoint to the strong salty savoury flavour of the burger.
I’m really looking forward to my next visit… for take out, possibly of some of the sweet slices or cakes, or perhaps in summer, when the name of the place will indeed be much more apt and appropriate.
On the other hand, maybe I'll visit again tomorrow morning for brunch. That entire menu of the various waffle-based recipes just look so intriguingly scrumptious!
Pros: Amazing menu: savoury waffles! 'Shroom benedict?!, Great hot choco drinks!, Big burger bursting with radical relish yumminess!
Cons: Burgers with relish don't need extra salt., A scarf is needed on a breezy winter's day.
