The only game in town

Itoigawa recently became a stop on the shinkansen line, and is a transfer point for ski resorts frequented by foreigners. However, it has a long way to go in terms of veg*n dining. There is probably not a single vegetarian living in town, and trying to order vegan at most restaurants will get you a blank stare at best.

So, I was delighted to be put in touch with Bambino, whose young chef and manager are both familiar with veganism and willing to stake their pride on a custom 4-course meal (3 plus pizza). However as they don't get this type of business often, they ask 48 hours advance notice to ensure they can stock the ingredients needed for a proper feast. If you drop in without notice you will have slimmer pickings - the wood-fired marinara pizza is vegan as is (and delicious) and you can order olives, salad-hold-the-dressing etc... enough to put together a meal, but you aren't really giving them a chance to shine so if you are planning in advance definitely make a reservation and specify vegan.

My menu:
20-vegetable salad plated with various purees
100% pure vegatable soup
Marinara pizza
Tomato saute of root vegetables

Four stars for understanding veganism and offering possibilities in an otherwise barren part of Japan.

Pros: Delicious marinara pizza, Chef stakes their pride on what they serve

Cons: Vegan options not clearly marked, Advance notice required for best results
