A few good options!

Not a ton of options for veg, but the sweet and sour tofu with veggies with rice were really good, and their servers are knowledgeable of the menu.

Less about the menu and more about the tiki bar vibe/view. I’d come here again! #Veganuary

Amazing Cocktails, Ok Food.

Best advice for this restaurant: talk to your Wait Staff. They are friendly and helpful, and were very quick to tell me of their vegan options. Also, decide on your food before you start drinking - the Mai Tai is amazing, but seriously strong.

First, he told me only two things on the menu were available for me and confirmed even the black tofu, shishito peppers, veggie fried rice, veggie chow mein and wok'ed veggies were made with oyster or fish sauce. He offered two safe tofu options, one sweet-n-sour, and a firecracker spicy. There was a lo mein option, maybe a salad and a couple other things I couldn't hear/don't remember because the alcohol was flowing.

I ordered the sweet-n-sour tofu with a side of spices, lo mein noodles and the edamame. It was good and filling, lots of veggies, pineapple and white rice came with the tofu, so I enjoyed it. The noodles were nice as a side, but a bit boring (noodles, sauce, mushrooms and spinach). It was a lot of food, more entree sizes than sides like I was anticipating, so I would probably not order the lo mein again.

Overall, it's a fun place to come for a celebration or nice night out. Pretty sure two couples got engaged while we were eating - everyone celebrated. The bay views are great, the drinks will knock your socks off, and you can have a safe meal with your friends.

Pros: Amazing Cocktails, Great Ambiance, Friendly Staff

Cons: Very Loud, Lack of Labels on Menu

Pretty Good!

I think Bali Hai is great for dinners with vegans and omnivores. The menu shows very few options, but our waiter kindly informed me of a few other custom dishes they could make! I got the sweet and sour tofu which was pretty good, but I'm not a fan of sweet and sour or breaded tofu so I'm not sure why I chose it lol. Anyway, it's nice to know that they have more available than what's on the menu!

Pros: Very nice restaurant atmosphere, Friendly staff

Cons: Limited vegan options, Not mind-blowing or anything that special

Come for the Mai Tais

Come for the Mai Tais, views of the San Diego skyline, and for the ambience deftly created by the capable staff. But not for the vegan food. Pre-COVID, Bali Hai had a separate vegetarian menu with vegan or easy-to-modify to vegan options. Currently, they have one menu for lunch and dinner with more limited options such as salads, edamame, sweet & sour tofu, and black bean tofu.

It's rare that I find vegan options at a Polynesian restaurant. And I'm thankful that Bali Hai has options that allow me to enjoy a San Diego institution with family and friends. But it's clear that the vegan food and flavors play second fiddle.

Pros: Mai Tais are legit, Friendly staff

Cons: Underdeveloped vegan flavors
