Amazing

This place ticked all the boxes. Authentic food, rich flavours, warm, cosy, and friendly service. They ask you on arrival if you want the regular or vegan menu without having to ask.

Malaysian food and games

Two separate menus, one in which is entirely vegan. The food is delicious and it has game nights to meet cool people!

Pros: The beef rendang 🤤, Games, A lovely community

Delicious Indian Malaysian food with bonus games

Love this place for the delicious food and the games, in particular Crokinole, which is so much fun to play whilst waiting for the food.

- Pani Puri: SOOO tasty, and fun to eat, bit expensive at $4.00 each
- Prawn curry: delicious
- Onion pakora: the peas add a nice bright element, not that crispy, delish tomato relish
- Garlic roti: delish, lots of garlic pieces
- Potato masala dosa: good, like mashed potato crepe
- Loaded lentil fritter w/sambal: quite dry, pleasingly tastes bit like fishcake

Pros: pani puri, fun games esp. crokinole

Delicious food, great games

The separate vegan menu is extensive and everything I've eaten here has been lovely; full of flavour and well-presented. Super friendly but relaxed vibe and a huge, great range of games to play! Absolutely check it out!

Ticks all the boxes

Baba Hawker is probably our favourite restaurant in Brunswick. It really does tick all the boxes: a huge vegan menu but also caters for fussy omnis; a friendly owner who makes you feel like you've been going there for years from your first visit; a fantastic carefully curated drinks menu - the owner sources most alcoholic drinks from local breweries and distilleries but also serves non-alcoholic beer and mocktails; an unusual selection of table games to keep you occupied while you wait for your food; and, most importantly, DELICIOUS Malaysian food!

As two vegans who are a fan of spicy food, we always get the same thing: one nasi lemak vegan beef rendang (with vegan egg); and one nasi lemak tofu tempeh sambal (with vegan egg).

Can't recommend this place enough!

Pros: Huge vegan menu but also good for omnis, Delicious food, Friendly staff

Separate Vegan Menu

We loved that they had a separate menu for the vegan options. My husband and I had a Beto box & Nasi Lamak, both with the mutton Curry. He thoroughly enjoyed the mutton and said it’s the best he’s had since stopping meat. The meal was really tasty, full of flavour, spice and texture. #Veganuary

Pros: Many vegan options , Friendly owner , Many board games to play

Spicy deliciousness

BIG fan of Baba Hawker and order it for delivery WAY too often.

It is very spicy - be warned! Ask for super mild if spice is not your friend.

It offers a real trove of vegan options, with mock meat and vegetable only options. It's always hard to choose what to order. And pretty inexpensive considering the location.

The owner is really nice and comes with his own chuppa chup facts!

A good place to go if you have picky omni friends too, there's really something for everyone.

Awesome vegan menu and experience

The food is delicious. We tried the pakora bites, dhaal, spicy chhole beans, chickpea salad and chapati bread. It was so reasonably priced at $30 for two people and we were more than satisfied.

The owners of Baba Hawker are delightful and welcoming. They talked about sourcing the produce locally and from small businesses. They were upfront about not being fully vegan because their patronage is only 40% vegan. I would love to see that percentage go up and up because these guys are a massive asset to Sydney Road and vegan-friendly business.

I can't wait to go back and try their slow cooked vegan beef rendang.

Pros: Delicious food, generous portions, Very reasonably priced

Extensive vegan baba-nyonya cuisine

The owner is super friendly and this place has an entire vegan menu with amazing mock meat and plant based dishes. Really authentic Malay cuisine, I'm definitely returning. Great location on Sydney road. Cool stack of board games, local cheap and unique beer, and the restaurant supports a local garden in Brunswick connected to youth employment. Also means low footprint on local veg! Totally recommend.

Pros: Great vegan options

Cons: Not fully vegan, but you could convince meat eaters
