Sweets in Sunnyside - Edit
Aubergine is a lively neighborhood cafe catering primarily to locals who want a jolt of coffee. They have a very generous rotating selection of vegan desserts.

Not very vegan friendly - Edit
The online menu has vegan options that don't exist. I ordered a few vegan baked goods from the display case (over which there was a lot of confusion for some reason - they come wrapped in plastic and are made elsewhere at a vegan bakery in the area) and then asked if they had the vegan panini options that I didn't see on the physical menu. The cashier was trying to accommodate me, saying he could manually update the order in the system and make one or two of them vegan, was asking other employees if the pesto is vegan, etc. I was skeptical and felt like the ordering process was becoming overly complicated, and then someone else stepped in (manager/owner?) and took over the order and told me they don't do vegan paninis.
Read more"Oh, he was saying he could still make one, they're still on the website".
[somewhat rudely/annoyedly]: "That was a long time ago".
So I then asked about the "stray vegetarian" hummus sandwich.
"It comes on honey wheat". (the menu just says wheat and it sounds vegan otherwise - but at least they are aware enough to know that honey isn't vegan).
I finally just ordered the "Vegan Burger", my only option, not really what I wanted for breakfast.
"Do you want that on ciabatta?"
"Is the brioche [the default it comes on] vegan?"
"Brioche isn't vegan, that's why I'm asking if you want ciabatta."
Said somewhat rudely as if I should know that the default bread their "VEGAN" sandwich comes on is not vegan. How many people have ordered this without having already made it obvious that they're looking for vegan food and been served the brioche without having any idea it's not vegan?
I tried to ask about the turmeric latte and was told they don't have it. At that point I could no longer see the coffee menu because it was back in the awkward line area, so I just asked if they could make a vegan mocha. She said no. Then decided to check the chocolate syrup label and said yes.
Beyond the interactions described here that felt weird, they were mostly polite, but I felt like a burden just trying to figure out what my options were. It does not seem like they are truly interested in catering to vegan customers. I had originally asked for a baked scone that was labeled vegan, but as the order was being finished and they hadn't given it to me, I just decided I didn't want to bother. I'm not totally sure that the $51 I ended up paying didn't include that. The sandwich was *ok*, but it was overall a pretty bad and awkward experience.

Pros: there's a token vegan menu option, sort of., vegan baked goods in the case (made elsewhere)
Cons: the token "vegan" option is not vegan by default, staff unclear about vegan options, website lists options that don't exist

Not many options - Edit
I want to like this place, but contrary to the online menu the only offered 2 vegan sandwich options. The vegan burger apparently doesn’t come with vegan bread, you have to ask for it. It’s also just a beyond patty, which is fine… but I know not everyone is keen on impossible or beyond meat since it’s replicating beef.
