Great place for families and friends

Hugh pillared old assembly rooms, very spacious. Friendly staff, with quick service. We went there for the first time with our 3 and 6 year old and met a couple friends. We were recommended ASK by friends who visit York a lot. Very relaxed. As with any Italian lots of veggie options, but also some good vegan options as well. We went again during our short stay. Would recommend.

So much choice

Really impressed with the labelling and sheer volume of options. Wish there were some branches nearer me. I had the garlic bread, lentil ragu and the blood orange chocolate torte. The first two dishes were absolutely delicious, the pudding less so. Friendly staff.

Lovely but few vegan options

We had a vegan mozzarella pizza which was lovely. There were no side dishes marked as vegan available at the time of our visit (the chips weren’t vegan). One vegan dessert (and 2 different flavoured sorbets) available.

Pros: What we had was lovely but not a huge choice., Vegan cheese was nice.

Cons: Not a huge amount of choice for vegans.

Fantastic vegan options

A gorgeous building and fantastic vegan options at this chain restaurant. Really delicious food. Staff knowledgable on vegan options and willing to check etc. However my salad was missing a few ingredients. When I mentioned it to the friendly waitress she checked and offered to either add the items or take it off the bill. I opted for a free salad . The dough balls were amazing!

good food & amazing dessert

For starters we had the no’duja dough bites and they were really tasty! my non-vegan girlfriend loved them too. I then had the spaghetti lentil ragu which was good and really filling. It didn’t taste much like a ragu, more like a lentil bolognese but it was still good. The dessert stole the show for me, the blood orange & chocolate tart was so delicious, rich and creamy! Highly recommend. Could do with a few more options but the ones they have are really good. The atmosphere was also so beautiful and the service was great!

The place looks incredible

There's not many vegan options and you can probably have better pizza and pasta without cheese elsewhere. I had the ragu pasta, no vegan cheese, and tbh I feel I could have cooked that at home half the price. But the place is stunning! And we had lovely drinks and focaccia bread

Pros: Amazing setting

Cons: Not many vegan options

Good choices and reliable

York Ask is housed in the old Assembly Rooms, a gorgeous old building with pillars and high ceilings. This does mean the acoustics are a bit weird and it's hard to hear people talk if the place is busy.

However, don't let that put you off as the food is very good. There are always a few vegan choices, including a starter and dessert. I had vegan garlic bread with vegan mozzarella for starter, super green vegan pizza for mains and the chocolate and orange tart for dessert. It's safe to say they were all delicious and I was full afterwards (not a given with some portion sizes). Friendly staff and quick service too.

Pros: Adequate number of options, Dessert!, Friendly staff

Cons: Sometimes can be noisy

Lovely Italian Food in the Heart of York

I literally stumbled across Ask Italian after a long day of traveling. The restaurant is is a gorgeous old building in the center of town. I love that they have a separate vegan menu & when the plates come out, they are clearly marked with little green stickers. I ordered the pasta with lentil bolognese, a simple salad & red wine. I didn't know it at the time but Ask Italian is part of a chain throughout England. I can honestly say that the food was as good (if not better) than anything I had in Italy.

Pros: vegan menu, delicious food, beautiful building

Be Assembled

It's always been a pleasure to dine at the very grand setting of ASK in York's old Assembly Rooms. Having first discovered it back in 2001 it was one of our restaurants of choice along with El Piano. An online voucher code helped make the most recent visit more satisfying leaving plenty of change out of £30 for 2 excellent pasta dishes, a bottle of wine and sparkling water. It was a dream to once again be able to order a melanzane, without doubt one of the best aubergine dishes out there. The introduction of a vegan menu at ASK fits in perfectly with current UK restaurant chain trends. Due to the very high ceilings and grand open plan setting it can get a bit chilly in here so maybe stick a jumper on particularly in the winter months.

Pros: vegan menu, great food , fantastic location

Cons: can get chilly inside , meat served
