Try the sesame lotus sticks - Edit

Stopped here while visiting Chongqing in 2011. It was hard to choose from the good selection of dishes, but the sesame lotus sticks were so delicious. Also had excellent ma po tofu. Enjoyed seeing the temple too. Dreaming about going back next time in Chongqing!

Nice Ambiance - Friendly Staff - Great Food - Edit

Many temples offer a 5 yuan vegetarian meal that is decent, but hardly gourmet. This temple has an upscale restaurant with excellent food. Expect to pay around 40 yuan, which is at the high-end of the moderate range in Chongqing. I had veggie 'meat' balls with mushrooms in a relatively sweet sauce. The portions are large so one dish was enough for me. I would certainly return here to try other dishes. No only does the menu have excellent pictures, if you look closely, you will see that each item has a brief English description of the ingredients. In most cases, this is just as good as having an English description. These descriptions are aligned vertically on the page and are in small print, so you need to look closely. The temple itself is quite interesting and is worth a visit. Many locals use this temple daily. One of the temple buildings is a bit unusual in that it contains a large collection of large statues of men posed as they might be if sitting around the temple. I have not seen this in other temples.

Pros: clean and peaceful, excellent food, nice temple

Cons: maybe a little pricey for Chongqing

Luohan Si - Edit

I wanted to add to the above review and first state that I did not eat there. I went there with Chinese friends and we went there at night, and there was no food offered. They said that they only offer a lunch at noon, and this is an important detail. The building the place is in itself is achingly gorgeous, and probably amazing in and of itself for a peek. If you are just being a tourist, this place is very close to HongYaDong (a short cab ride or walk away), and that place has a plethroa of snack foods and a Japanese restaurant. My visit to this temple was unsuccessful, but I plan to go back, and one should try to make it there as soon as you can- they are tearing down some structures around it (nice old buildings) and the ambiance is definitely going to change in the future once more of the city noise makes its way to this lovely, tucked away place. I hope you have more luck then I did! It seems great, though...

great decor, great food - Edit

Arhat temple is one of Chongqing's main tourist sites, and well worth a visit. There's a small admission charge for the temple complex (which you don't have to pay if you're only dining at the restaurant). No English is spoken in the restauarant, but a picture menu is available. Specializes in Sichuan-style (hot, spicy, Chinese) vegan food. Open for lunch (and maybe dinner?). I had mushrooms & pinenuts (Y12), Korean cabbage & black mushroom dumpling soup (Y12), corn & pea fried dumplings ('jiao zi')(Y5), thin rice noodle & vegetable soup (Y5) and coconut juice (Y6) - ok, I was hungry!! All the food was delicious, but unfortunately several people were smoking which was very annoying.
