A Good Resource for Healthy Eaters in Michiana - Edit

Apple Valley is a medium-sized store with a good selection of basic necessities (seeds, grains, pulses, legumes, and flours) in bulk; a decent selection of supplements; frozen and refrigerated foods; and specialty items for the vegan/vegetarian/healthy eater.

Prices are typically higher than larger stores on items available in typical large grocery stores but sales are frequent. For those interested in Seventh-Day Adventist-style meat analogues (e.g. Loma Linda, Worthington, Cedar Lake, etc) Cedar Lake offers a nice selection with good discounts often taken. In addition they sell Morningstar Farms products in bulk packages.

There is a mid-sized gluten free section, with prepared products and basic ingredients. Prices are, as usual, quite high and for items which can be found in ordinary supermarkets they seem specially high. The selection is larger than the supermarkets in the area though, and basic needs will be met with it.

The staff is unfailingly welcoming and helpful, and the environment is pleasant. The store is clean and well organized. Given that there are few other local options, Apple Valley is a pleasant surprise in an underserved market. I can recommend it highly. If you are looking for something unusual, calling first is a good idea.

Pros: Meets basic needs for vegans/vegetarians, Some specialty products and unsual items, Pleasant staff, clean organized store

Cons: Prices higher than larger stores, Small size means smaller selection
