Short walk from National Mall

This mall food court has several good options for vegans near the Smithsonian museums. Amsterdam Falafel is one of my favs cause the fries are so good. This time they over-salted a bit, but was fine after a little shake. They have an allergen menu clearly stating what not to eat if you are vegan, lactose intolerant, gluten-free, etc. Very nice! Wish I took a picture of it to post. Plenty of vegan toppings for a super yum falafel.

Pros: Vegan in area where any food is hard to find

Decent fast-food falafel

This food court option had falafel as a main and you can customize your bowl. It was alright but I wouldn't go out of my way for this place.

Tasty, inexpensive, but in a food court

The falafel and pita were very good, nice salad bar for toppings. Fires were nicely crispy. They do sell meat foods. It's in a food court, so no ambiance. Convenient to the metro.

Pros: Lots of tasty vegan options.

Cons: In a food court.

they don't weigh bowls!

So apparently at Amsterdam Falafel, they weigh your build-your-own salad bowls. But at this L'enfant location, they don't weigh anything! So you can build a salad bowl as big as you want it. Nice. I love the hummus, tahini, and peanut sauces, but it's easy to go overboard. All in all, AF can get a little greasy and heavy-feeling, but if you take it easy you'll be fine. I think it's a better deal to get a huge salad bowl and a pita on the side; you get more food and you can build your sandwich as you go instead of trying to rush and shove ingredients between your falafel balls in the line.

Pros: build your own, yummy sauces, lots of vegan options

Cons: staff is hit-or-miss friendly, not open on weekends, can be greasy

best falafel I've ever had

Though not entirely vegan, they seemed pretty close from what I saw. Their falafel was so good, and building your own is a nice touch.

Mostly vegan but disappointed they added chicken

Updating my review below to note that they recently added chicken. I think this is the only location of Amsterdam Falafel that has chicken. i was disappointed they did it so am changing my review from 5 stars to 4. Otherwise the rest of my old review still applies:

Amsterdam Falafel is a fabulous DC legend, and this is their newest (I think) location. You get to do all your own toppings, so you can choose super healthy fresh veggies like cucumber salad, garlicky parsley, tomato topping, a variety of pickled veggies, etc. -- all very flavorful! If you want more calories, the falafels are divine, and they also have toppings like really rich hummus and baba ganoush. There are just a very small number of non-vegan toppings and sauces. You can either get a bowl or a pita. Very reasonably priced (by weight for bowls or one price for the pita).

falafel

All the ingredients today were vegan except for two, the choice of toppings was excellent and everything was really fresh and delicious. I'll definitely go back before I leave DC.
