CLOSED: Alma Verde

At last a vegan-friendly restaurant has made it to Pedasi! Alma Verde offers a selection of vegan and lacto-vegetarian selections. There are three categories on their menu: smoothies and juices, main courses, and desserts. The blended drinks are vegan, including fruit juices, veg and fruit smoothies, as well as tea and coffee. I've tried the watermelon-strawberry-mint smoothie. It was out of this world! I've also had two of the main courses. The zucchini pasta was terrific: raw zucchini,garlic,herbs, a special tomato sauce and vegan nut cheese. The buckwheat crepe meal usually comes with real goat cheese, and they may use egg in the crepe, but they made my meal without egg and substituted a cashew cheese for the goat cheese. The owners, Christian and Emily, understand veganism, so let them know about your food preferences. They offer a vegan brownie and a vegan ice cream in their desert list. I can't wait to work my way through the menu. There are a number of raw options too for raw food enthusiasts. Main courses range from $8-$12.

Location: on calle Mariano Batista, next door to Western Union office. That's one-two blocks off the Main Street , and the town square . The cross street is calle la Policia .

Ambiance & menu: a bright modern cafe with an espresso bar and open kitchen. A big choice of smoothies, coffees, teas, fresh juices--no sugar added. Main dishes include buckwheat crêpes with avocado , pasta plate with raw zucchini noodles , house salad. Vegan ice cream and homemade gluten free cake are among the desserts. Friendly owners who really understand vegan and vegetarian cuisine. Main dishes range from $8-12; open for lunch & dinner.
