Allegro is top quality. Everything, and I mean everything, is delicious!
Read moreAs an out of town visitor, this is one of the places you will lament not being in your own city.
Try the breakfast sandwich and an assortment of bakery items if you don’t know where to start.
Just note: this is not dine-in. There’s a park up the street where you can sit outside on a nice day.
Pros: Sandwiches , Cinnamon rolls, Baked goods

An absolute gem. - Edit
My wife and I live in California and make a few trips a year to Pittsburgh to visit friends and family. Any time we are in town, making the drive to Allegro is a definite must. I can’t say we have ever had anything from Allegro we didn’t love (and felt the same way when their sister restaurant B52s was around). Our go-to’s are the seitan melt, breakfast sandwich, apple galette, cinnamon rolls, rugelach, cookies…honestly, you name it, it’s probably great. I seriously can’t recommend Allegro enough. One of the best vegan spots I’ve ever been to.

Superb little Bakery/Cafe - Edit
If you’re ever in Pittsburgh make sure you visit this amazing little cafe! The food is awesome—we ordered a Seitan Melt and Mushroom Melt on Sourdough bread and they were both so delicious! The flavors were really good and the portions are huge! You could probably share one sandwich with another person. We didn’t get any of their baked goods but everything looked really tasty. The only downside is that there’s zero seating and we didn’t know so we had to eat in our car. The food comes wrapped in foil and it can get messy! Still, this place was a 10/10!

Fresh & Authentic - Edit
What a gem of a find in Pittsburgh! From ULTRA FRESH croissants, chocolate croissants, raspberry and chocolate rugelach, blueberry danish, tofu sandwich on homemade sourdough, a reuben-esque recreation and a breakfast sandwich with inhouse chickpea tofu slices and homemade sausage. Happy, friendly, welcoming staff with smiles to greet you and the fresh bread aromas fill the entry. Beautiful Eastern European neighborhood just a stone's throw (or drive as you may) from Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. Go early to ensure they don't sell out of your favorites!

Best cinnamon roll ever - Edit
So so so good. The cinnamon roll is to die for, best I’ve ever had. I’ve heard high praise for the sandwiches and can’t wait to try them. I wasn’t blown away by the chocolate chip cookie but the chocolate itself was fantastic.

Would be dangerous if I lived nearby - Edit
Lovely little bakery with lots of nice options; enjoyed their sweet baked goods more than their savory, but didn’t get a chance to try their sandwiches (which I will next time!)

Allegro’s breakfast sandwich is fantastic. I am honestly not crazy about some of their pastries, but the coffee cake is unbeatable. Best coffee cake I’ve ever had

A must-stop in Pittsburgh - Edit
I stopped here a few years back and had their pastries. They were delicious, by the way - but I was never able to come for a proper lunch. I hear recommendations for them often, but don’t often make the journey to Squirrel Hill from where I live in the South Hills. Today, the stars aligned and my schedule allowed me to come in and try a sandwich.
Read moreI ordered the seitan melt, and it. Was. Life-changing. Quite frankly, I’m not sure how their grassroots, word-of-mouth notoriety is even possible, because once you bite into one of these sandwiches, you will be too busy stuffing it into your mouth as quickly as your body will allow you to chew. In my eyes, this is a sandwich anyone would love, whether they are vegan, vegetarian, or omni.
There are a lot of cuisines that are easy to adapt when you give up animals: Thai, Indian, and Mexican are all easy enough to veganize with delicious results. One thing that is difficult to find: A good, old-fashioned sandwich. I’m so happy I gave Allegro a try, and will absolutely be back to try other items on their menu.

BUSY. No where to sit, barely anywhere to stand even. Got some little deli fridge items like hummus and cashew cheese, as well as a breakfast sandwich that kicked ass. Delightful and friendly staff.

So many options! - Edit
Had some great sandwiches (seitan melt and breakfast at sandwich) at allegro bakery and was surprised at how filling they were! I wanted to try all the breads and baked goods, would go back if in Pittsburgh again. Also really enjoyed the chocolate chip tahini pistachio cookie, thick crunchy cookie with just enough chew. Best vegan cookie we tried in Pittsburg so far.

Frequent breakfast - Edit
Allegro Hearth is so good I end up there at least a few times a month. The pastries are to die for, their breakfast sandwiches slap, their soups are great, everything they offer has been truly incredible. This place really proves that pastries can be made fully vegan without any loss of flavor, and arguably better than non vegan versions.

Everything is amazing!! - Edit
I had the seitan melt and it was the best sandwich I've ever had. I've been a vegan for 37 years. I'm originally from Pittsburgh area and I can't wait to go back again when I visit in a few weeks. Everything about the sandwich was perfect, the shears, the vegan cheese, the seitan was the best I've ever had as well, the pickles. The cinnamon roll was fabulous. It was so big, it took me all day to eat and I shared bites with family. The lamination in the roll and in the blueberry danish was unbelievable. The cinnamon roll was caramelized on the bottom which made it even dreamier. I also had a chocolate chunk cookie that was amazing.

Delicious & Welcoming - Edit
I stopped here twice on my weekend trip to pgh and I am so glad that I did. The staff is so friendly and the food is just delicious. The staff recommends arriving early (they open at 8am) and/or placing your order online when they open so that you can reserve the best baked goods, since they sell out quickly on the weekends. I loved everything I tried (chocolate cake, cinnamon roll, chocolate filled cruffin, and the raspberry danish) and I can’t wait to go back!

Love this Bakery - Edit
So happy to find a fully vegan bakery that has everything you’d expect to find in a bakery. The bread here is great, and I always get some of their hummus or cashew cheese to have with it. The sandwiches are also delicious, and some of them have good amounts of protein too (seitan melt or tofu).
Read moreThe pastries are also amazing. Even my girlfriend’s non-vegan family loved the cinnamon rolls here, and always asks me to grab one (or many) if I’m heading to Allegro.
Great bakery, so glad they switched to fully vegan!

Much longer hours needed - Edit
Pittsburgh is not an easy place to be vegan. In general, I would describe the food culture here as vegan-hostile and while a few, not many, but a few places offer vegan options, there are very, very few fully vegan restaurants left. Allegro Hearth is one.
Read moreThe owner of Allegro Hearth also owned--and closed--the spectacular B-52 restaurant in the Lawrenceville neighborhood. And this place is by no means a substitute. It's primarily a bakery with an extremely limited offering if you're looking for a meal.
It shouldn't be too much to ask for lunch at 3:00 in the afternoon. But they cut off sandwich orders at 2:00 pm, despite apparently having pickup available until 4:00 pm. Why? They just do. It feels cruel.
Pros: great food
Cons: far too limited hours, take out only, limited options

I would kill for these pastries in my city - Edit
We’re in town to see a musical, and I was so charmed to find that not only is this a vegan bakery/deli but, as it seems by the addition of rugelach and hamentaschen, a vegan *Jewish* bakery/deli. The rugelach was some of the best I’ve ever had, and the pain au chocolat (I’m being pedantic, in the US it’s a chocolate croissant) was amazing. Their breakfast sandwich was also to die for. I would eat here so often if I didn’t live 6 hours away.
