Close the (Jaimie Lee) curtains and snuggle up - Edit

Do you remember that movie with John Travolta and Jaimie Lee Curtains, where they walk around in spandex all movie and some romantic plot thickens until it ends up in a regular old happy ending? Well, imagine the spandex being food. Vegan food that is, and you and your travel buddy are having lunch at Aju, you can be John or Jaimie, doesn't matter. Anyhow, in reference to the movie the struggle is finding the place. The comic relief you trying to order in your best Japanese. Where this review is heading? Well, I can ensure you that after the second act you've had just about enough of old movies bud did have had a decent good old lunch and/or dinner (I had lunch, loved it). The ingredients were fresh, an original menu and a spoon full of sweet old vegan loving. Thanks for a great lunch!

Pros: Live cooking, no pre fab anything, Original dishes, Great place to sit and enjoy

Absolutely worth a visit - Edit

Wide range of options including veganized local specialities eg okonomiyaki. Lunch set menu good value but you can also order from the main dinner menu. Pizza and burger options. If you go for okonomiyaki or yakitori I would probably recommend having a starter or side as well. Brown rice. Choice of beers and wine list. Desserts inc soy ice cream. Small but not cramped. Some shop items sold too. Price good for quality and variety. Close to museum of Housing and Living. English menu. Modern interior. Planning to go a 2nd time.

Cozy setting and nice staff. The food is quite good, though some of the items are a tad rich. Love the avocado fritter and yakitori.

Lunch/dinner opens only Thu, Fri, Sat and Sunday - Edit

One of the best vegan eatery in Osaka!! But please be careful they are NOT open on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday!!

Try vegan soy beef jerky (¥400) as an appetizer!!

How to get there, go to subway purple colored Tanimachi Line Nakazakicho 中崎町 station, exit no.1 go inside the arcade (shotengai) walk about 100m until you see the nail/cell phone decoration (with swalovski stones) salon then turn left for about 40m. and you will see a small signboard says "あじゅ” should be 5 min. from the station.

Delicious food - Edit

The food was fabulous aside for the overkill of kewpie mayonnaise on the Okonomiyaki pancake! Lots to choose from on the menu. Location a little out of the way and a bit hard to find.

Great restaurant! - Edit

Lovely vegan spot in Osaka. It's a small restaurant, and maybe I've been lucky, but I've never had trouble getting a seat. The lunch menu is a bit more limited, with a choice between two meal sets that change each weekend as well as desserts. I would recommend going for dinner, as you can try the okonomiyaki and many other dishes. We were surprised that the okonomiyaki sauce seemed to have a cinnamon taste; it was good, but since I've only had it once, I'm not sure if this is their usual recipe or if this also varies. The vegan yakitori and deep fried vege chicken were very good, as were the cakes. The ice cream leaves a bit to be desired, with the ice cream sauce having most of the flavor, but that's probably just my sweet tooth talking. Great place, definitely recommended.

Pros: Good food, Reasonable price

Yum! - Edit

We tried the soy and tofu burger, okonomiyaki, 4 cheese pizza, carbonara, berry parfait and soy soft serve with choc sauce for dinner! Was all yummy but not to-die-for amazing and okonomiyaki had a bit too much mayo for my liking. 5550¥ for all that so $68AU which isn’t *too* bad considering we got 6 meals and they’re all filling. The man who I assume is the owner was working alone (taking orders, making meals, washing up) so just an FYI it’s a nice, cosy place to dine in and relax and enjoy your meal and he works surprisingly quick and we didn’t wait too long for service and meals. He also has a button on the table for you to press when you need him. Definitely worth a try! There’s a big menu and a wide variety of dishes you’re unlikely to find elsewhere! :)

Awesome food. Lovely service - Edit

Loved the food here. We came for lunch and got the salad set and the soy meat patty set. Both were so good we came back for dinner. There is a much larger menu to choose from for dinner. They make vegan okonomiyaki as well as Yakitori. This is a great opportunity for vegans to try some traditional local dishes that you won’t be able to have elsewhere. It’s right near Nakazakicho station (take exit 1). They have a website with more accurate opening hours (you should check the website because the owner said the happy cow details haven’t been updated). Highly recommended :)

Unique options but just okay taste - Edit

It was cool to try okonomiyaki because we otherwise wouldn't have been able to, but we actually found it pretty unappetizing once we actually got it. I found the mock pork inside of it quite off-putting. But this could just be personal taste. The tofu and radish salad was pretty big, so therefore a good deal, but wasn't very tasty in our opinion. The fried tofu ("fish and chips") was also just okay. Really not sure why they call it fish and chips though -- it's just fried tofu. Everything was too expensive considering the portion sizes.

Pros: Pretty big menu.

Cons: Too expensive considering sizes.

Very Quaint, Great Food - Edit

The overall atmosphere of this place is very quiet and peaceful, and barring the drinks with honey in them it’s completely vegan. My friend and I tried the okonomiyaki and several of the appetizers(including the “chicken” karaage) and all of them were very flavorful and true to the original taste to the point that it didn’t even taste like it was vegan. The soy ice cream is also very good. Overall, I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a nice dinner. On a side note, the lunch menu is different than the dinner menu so keep in mind that if you come before 5:30 then you can only choose between burgers and bento boxes.

Pros: Many Vegan Options

Best meal I had in Osaka - Edit

You MUST stop by here if you’re in Osaka!
~I tried the okonomiyaki of course since everyone is raving about it.
~I also tried the Koya Tofu fish n chips! It was even better than the okonomiyaki in my opinion!!! So chewy and crispy!
~Lastly the soft serve. I got the plain one, it was mind-blowingly good!!!!! Rich & orgasmic beany taste... I would return just for the soft-serve!

Pros: Super delicious, Friendly, English menu

Cons: Small portion, Pricy

Delicious - Edit

I can't stress how delicious the okonomiyaki is! I went with a non-vegan Japanese family and they all enjoyed it as well and seemed surprised with how it is similar to the original.

We also tried the skewers which were great. If you don't mind oily food, you will love it.

Pros: Tasty

Satisfying fusion food - Edit

Great range of items. Felt very satisfied afterward. Leans toward faux products over new flavour combinations. The lasagne was very realistic! The yakatori was tasty and generous. Cheeses tasted homemade not store bought, a good thing. Would have liked to see more interpretations of Japanese cuisine but that's just personal!

Vegan okonomiyaki - Edit

Large menu for such a small place. Tapa like items. The cheese has a very curry taste and stringy but not your typical "cheesy" flavor but that was fine with me. The okonomiyaki was very good, fun to get traditional Japan food in vegan version, has a little too much mayo for my liking.

Sadly a really bad experience - Edit

I had the Kimchi and the Okonomiaki today. The Kimchi was OK (although the portion size could be bigger considering the price) but the Okonomiaki were just a layer of greasy mashed potatoes on a way to chewy layer of soy meat. To make matters worse the Okonomiaki seemed to have just been warmed up in a microwave (judging by the speed they were ready, the fact they were just partly warm and the beeping sounds coming from the kitchen).
After the meal I felt like I had eaten a kilo of overly greasy chips :(
I'm sad to say this was one of the worst meals I had in Japan (and I ate a lot of convenience store food).

Cons: Expensive, warmed up food

Comfort food - Edit

If you need something a bit comforting to eat come here. We had the okonomiyaki and vegan rice paper lasagne. Both were excellent and just what we needed after living off rice for a few days. Looks like there is one guy running the whole thing so very impressed. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the lighting was a bit in your face. But I would still recommend if you need some yummy comfort food.

Pros: Comforting. Vegan options. English translation. Fr

Cons: Lighting.

the food was very good - Edit

it's a small, cozy setting and the food is excellent. very very tasty, and vegan for absolutely the most part (didn't scan the entire menu though as I/we knew pretty quickly what i/we wanted)

to reiterate, the tastiness of the food is fantastic. and it's relatively cheap to boot.

slightly smaller than ideal portions, but this is a seemingly a common trait at Japanese vegan restaurants. as it's pretty cheap, get a dessert and/or appetizer and you should be fine. a cool vegan fake squid appetizer was worth it, and the avocado chocolate cake was amazing. it's the main dishes that were really out of this world awesome though.

Pros: great taste, good value , fun location

Cons: smallish portions, a little chilly (a 'very cold' winter day

Vegetable Kitchen Bar Aju, Osaka - Edit

Some points to clarify from the current listing details (update submitted a moment ago for HappyCow HQ to correct:-

1) The correct name listed on the sign at the resto door is:-

Vegetable Kitchen Bar Aju

2) There's honey on the menu so it isn't all vegan

It seems to be a one person operation (more power to the guy's elbow if that is indeed the case). The food was great. It's pretty easy to find with GPS from either Nakazakicho & Tenjimbashisuji Rokuchōme subway stations.

If this place was all vegan I'd defo rate it a 5.

Pros: Vegan friendly, Great tasting food

Cons: Shame about the honey

Great corner in one of Osaka's best neighborhoods - Edit

I stopped by Aju just to grab a bento box to take home (vegan hamburger with their homemade vegan cheese spiced with coconut and served with brown rice, salad, and deliciously seasoned eggplant, all for only ¥550), and will certainly be going back there again to try out their whole menu.

The service is great, and it's a cozy spot, pretty quiet in the afternoon.

Pros: Delicious food, Excellent value, Bento take out option

Cons: The shimeji seemed to have a lot of "konbo," artif

Awesome Osaka Find! - Edit

We made a little detour on the way back from Universal Studios to try Aju and I'm so glad we did!

Don't be discouraged by the fact this looks like someone's home, the food is well worth it. We had the avocado fritters, salad and assorted vegan chicken, all incredibly tasty and served by lovely staff.

Finished things off with a soy soft serve with secret cornflakes underneath and picked up some cookies to take home. Definitely give this place a try!

Pros: All vegan, Vegan soft serve, Friendly staff
