A Vegan-Friendly Oasis in Abashiri - Edit
The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and able to easily recommend vegan food/grocery items in their store, and their lunch menu has very clearly labelled vegan options! Lunch is actually open from 11am to 3pm (11:00 - 15:00).
Read moreWent there three times during our trip (once for rations and twice for lunch) and between us tried all 3 Vegan menu options as well as their Chai! For reference though, they are pretty accommodating English wise and try their best, but I mostly interacted with them in Japanese so you may have a different experience. They also have an English menu available, but the vegan lunch plate isn't on it. They also have Warabimochi as a vegan dessert option and also sell small soy ice cream tubs but we didn't have either while we were there.
Overall a MUST for any vegan or vegetarian passing through Abashiri. I recommend that if you're staying the night to also order a Bento box for takeout to later heat up for dinner! We struggled to find nearby dinner restaurants and that would've been a life saver! It was a great idea that was actually recommended by the staff but that day we were leaving Abashiri and didn't need it anymore..

Personal recommendations:
Chai (with soy milk - not sure if it's their standard milk, but we asked especially for it) — incredibly warming. Probably some of the best chai you'll get in Japan especially!
Vegan and gluten free ramen (Soy sauce base) - nice flavour, surprisingly nice noodles given they were gluten free, and amazing slightly charred soy meat! (Warning for non-vegan meat references) But had a texture reminiscent of fatty pork/pork belly that I had really missed since eating vegan/vegetarian! Was a very warming dish and great for the snowy weather. They also had a Salt/Shio base soup option which we didn't try but surely would also be a great option!
Soy meat teishoku/lunch plate — a super customisable menu item with options for salad dressings and marinades/sauces for the soy meat (the same style as in the ramen). I ordered based on the staff's recommendations and ended up with the fermented carrot dressing and sesame flavoured soy meat and it was amazing!!! I'm not a salad person but the dressing made it so moreish, and the sesame marinade on the soy meat was really tasty and well balanced. My only "grievance" was that the soy meat was almost too "fatty" so after about 3 of the 4 pieces I felt about done and had to pass my last over to my partner haha
Pros: Extremely friendly and informed staff, Clearly labelled vegan lunch menu items, Lots of vegan grocery items
Cons: Easier to navigate with some Japanese knowledge, May have to ask staff for grocery recommendations
