Love this place, a hidden gem. - Edit
It's so nice to have somewhere to eat good vegan food that doesn't involve the city. You can get parking pretty easy, don't have to battle through crowds or deal with nervy hipsters. Nope, at A Caterpillar's Dream, the hardest thing is knowing what to order because there's so much choice, and that's something that most vegans don't get when eating at a restaurant.
Read moreThis cute little cafe looks like any other regular coffee shop from the outside, and the inside. The difference is, it's all vegetarian. There are loads of vegan options and most things can be made vegan on request. The staff are always really polite and attentive, I've never had an issue at all. They're consistently friendly and you never feel imposed upon, nor ignored.
The food options are exactly what you'd get in a regular cafe, but with a vegan/vegetarian twist. A lot of dishes tend to have an Asian influence, which makes it all quite flavoursome and good for a light meal. You can choose from your typical breakfast options: pancakes, beans, mushrooms, toast and so forth and for lunch you can have a range of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, soups, noodle dishes, pies and pasties, rice dishes, pasta and a load of great entrees like sesame tofu, spring rolls and my favourite which is the battered sweet potato wedges. I like to get something different each time I visit, but there's so many great options it's hard to choose. I've never been disappointed with what I've ordered. It's fresh, clean food that is presented neatly and full of flavour.
Desserts are in the glass cabinet at the front, but I love the vegan yo yos on the counter. They are simply fantastic, buttery and creamy and melt in your mouth. I haven't had better yo yos anywhere else. Their coffee is also really good and they make their own soy milk, which is pretty awesome.
By no means is this place fine dining, or a unique foodie experience, it's just a good tasting light meal in a casual little cafe, where you don't have to ask a million questions about ingredients and can simply sit, relax and eat. And there's not a lot of places where a vegan can do all that. Definitely a cafe worth trying.

Disappointing - Edit
After hearing friends rave about this establishment, we visited for lunch and dined on an incredibly dull schnitzel style burger and sweet potato pie. Fairly certain, the schnitzel was not made on site, just heated and put into a bun along with minimal fillings. Everything on the plate was beige, bland and lacking in any special touches. The sweet potato pie was unseasoned and uninspiring. A return visit is highly unlikely.

Always nice to find vegan food in a mall, but... - Edit
It could just be a regular suburban cafe in the middle of a local shopping centre - uniform laminate tables and matching upholstered chairs, fridge full of soft drinks and a modern wood-finish interior - but it's actually a vegetarian cafe with a decent-sized western/Asian menu and a good number of vegan options (75 to 80 percent. It was fairly quiet last Sunday afternoon when we went in for lunch. While the vegan snd gluten-free options were clearly marked on the menu, the friendly staff member was able to offer us extra details, like whether there was pumpkin in the lasagna. (Unfortunately there was.) We ordered and shared a vegetable pie with mushroom and spinach and the 'chicken' fillet burger. The pie crust was very light, almost too thin, but a nice change from the hard short crust found on a lot of vegan pies. The filling, although moist, was a bit limp and insubstantial, with only vegetables and sauce. It was accompanied by a plain garden salad and nicely cooked chips. The burger was fine, with the mock meat not too offensive. Both of these meals cost around $16, which is not unreasonable compared to similar fare but not cheap either. We had noticed vegan sticky date pudding on the specials menu and during our main had decided to go for it. This was a little disappointing: the pudding was pretty ordinary and the 'mixed berries' just strawberries. The one thing it did have going for it was a decent amount of soy ice cream, as I find a lot of places skimp on this. However it was not worth the $12. All in all this is an intriguing place that I will check out again, but the jury is still out.

Doesn't feel oily or overly spicy, so I can easily eat here a few times in a week and not feel sick!
Even my mum doesn't complain... And she's hard to please!
My favourite dishes are the vegetarian lasagne (which uses mock meat, not sure if it's tvp or quorn) , the fried dumplings and the Japanese inspired bento boxes. I haven't tried all the dishes yet... But I plan to eventually.
Pros: Huge range, Moderate price, Yummy and reasonably healthy

The main downer? If you don't know Kew well, might be a little tricky to find but really, it's not that hard. Find Leo's supermarket in Kew and it's next door to Laurents

Convenient but bland snacks - Edit
Although the take- away rice paper rolls are a good healthy snack, they generally use too much oil in this cafe. The big breakfast is very ordinary and I couldn't believe they used cheap white bread as toast.

This cafe has great potential so it's such a shame they keep rude and obnoxious staff with big attitude problems.
I wont go back simply because I don't want condescending waiters, who really don't know much or anything about a vegetarian diet making me feel uncomfortable.

Not just a Caterpillar's Dream! - Edit
The range of food available at this cafe is wide - not just a lot of options, but different styles as well. You may chose a number of small dishes and graze, or one of the many cakes from the display with coffee (some of which are vegan), a Bento box, a sizzling hot plate, pasta, soup or salad...see what I mean? Service is friendly, prices are a little on the expensive side, but the food is good. I had the bento box with roast duck today, which was something like amazing. Vegan and gluten free items are marked on the vast menu and you may even have a vegan dessert such as the sticky date pudding...you'll defintely need more than one visit to sample.
