Piazza della Passera, 1, Florence, Italy, 50125

Over the years this place attempt to be all-veg then not and then yes again per latest report 2015. Small setting with several tables so better to make a reservation; gets crowded. Offers an array of vegan dishes. Menu changes daily. Open Tue-Sun 10:00am-10:00pm.

Dissapointed - Edit

The service was nice. The food good, not great. The portions very small and in my opinion overpriced. It suppose they use just organic products, but I still found it expensive. We paid more than 50€ for two plates, one dessert, one bottle of water and two beers.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, clearly marked, Friendly staff

Cons: Expensive, Small portions

Good Vegan Options - Edit

Visited last week. I think about 40% of the menu was vegan and few more things could be made vegan. The menu is in Italian only staff can speak English if you need. We both had some farinata for starter, basmati rice with veggies as a main, and an almond milk dessert with dark chocolate. Portion sizes seemed about right, and the food was tasty. The only thing I wish I had checked was the water bottle, as I opened and poured it without checking the seal, and I'm not sure if it was new because it look reused and didn't taste like a new bottle of the same brand I'd had earlier in the week.

Pros: Good vegan options, Very nice cosy and intimate atmosphere

Make a reservation - Edit

We tried to get a table last night (a Friday evening) without booking but they couldn't accommodate us so we made a booking for tonight. Menu is in Italian but most of the friendly and knowledgable staff speak excellent English and explain the menu to each table of English speaking diners. Fairly small restuarant and very busy. Menu is constantly changing and tonight approx half the menu was vegan and a couple of the other dishes could be made vegan if required. Our dishes were all light, fresh and delicious. Moderately priced for two people, three courses each and one drink each the total cost was €51 which I consider good value for money in a place of this quality.

Pros: Everything made on site from mostly local and ofte

Cons: Pays to reserve a table which is easy enough even

Mixed feelings - Edit

Cosy restaurant with nice interior. simple menu with vegan options

I chose two vegan meals:
1. "linguine al pate di olive taggiasche, aglio, peperoncino e pomodori"- linguine with olive and garlic sauce, paprika and tomatoes. It came quite undercooked ( not just al dente), but not spicy because I asked for it. When I asked them to re-do it and cook properly they brought it way over cooked ( it took them very long time) and extremely spicy ( even though I asked again for not spicy at all).
2. "insalata di stagione" - season salad. It contained just cucumbers, lettuce and tomatoes and was a bit overpriced (6,5 euros) considering quite a small portion.

On the other hand, my partner chose vegetarian options: "cecina con stracchino" ( chickpea flatbread with a type of cheese looking like mozzarella ) and "crocchette di ceci con verdure saltate e salsa di yogurt alla menta" (chickpea croquette with sautéed mixed veggies side and mint yogurt served in a separate bowl). He liked both and they were filling enough. Second dish is vegan if not eaten with yogurt, and is very delicious!

Pros: Friendly staff

Cons: Menu is only in Italian

Worth a Visit! - Edit

I was in search of veg/vegan options while in Florence and came across 5 e cinque while walking the streets.

I'm really glad I found my way inside! Pleasant staff that helped with any English translations, flavorful food, and a nice setting.

The menu is small and simple, which I often prefer. Food were a little smaller but still big on flavor (veggie couscous was so comforting). I was a little disappointed with the wine selections but I fully away that's just a matter of my own personal tastes (wish they offered a more full bodied red).

I'd definitely recommend!

Pros: good food, quiet setting, polite staff

Cons: not my favorite wine selection

Tasty, fresh food & friendly service! - Edit

After reading that this was a small restaurant, which required reservations, I wasn't holding out much hope getting a seat. We were given a table straight away though, and the service was excellent (staff were happy to explain anything we didn't understand on the menu, in English)! The location was nice too (we sat outside so could watch the goings on in the small, but busy piazza nearby). There were some decent vegan food options for me, and the portions were slightly larger than some of the other places we've been to (which was great because we were hungry!). Overall, a very pleasant experience.

Pros: friendly, tasty food, nice location

Eat Here - Edit

5 e Cinque is a delight in Florence, small and charming, delicious food, very nice and friendly staff. It's the kind of place that you can go for a casual, healthy lunch and relax in an informal setting, or you can go at night with your partner and have a romantic evening, with great food and wine.

There are vegan and vegetarian options on the menu, and staff will help you choose if you don't happen to read Italian. I find the meals here nutritious, light, creative, and well-presented. The food is organic, which is not always easy to find.

5 e Cinque is frequented by both Italians and foreigners, which gives it a nice vibe. It's on the south side of the Arno, which can mean fewer crowds and a more relaxing atmosphere. Still, for dinner in particular, it's recommended that you make a reservation as it's a popular place and fills up.

Pros: Nutritious, organic food, quaint, very friendly owner and staff

delightful meal after the museum - Edit

Excellent service, very kind in explaining the dishes in english, and generous in expressing the food to both vegans and vegetarians alike. the restaurant is all vegetarian, and it sounded like they have cheese dishes crafted like fine art.

The lunch portions were filling at. Of the vegan desserts, I had the almond custard with chocolate, a delicate sweet ending. The table next to me had a dish described as a 'muffin' but I over heard them saying it was more like a cupcake and cookie mixed together. The woman's expression (of ecstasy) turned heads, and led the table across the room to comment on how joyful her face looked while eating.

Overall, the atmosphere was full of passion and cultivated a situation beyond the food, leaving a powerful impression. A rich experience, worth dropping in if you are visiting Palazzo Pitti or The Boboli Gardens. You will feel very welcome, and leave fueled for more adventures in Florence.

Updated from previous review on Thursday March 12, 2015

Also from reading the previous reviews I want to say the restrains has more than 5 tables, maybe 10, and 2 outside.

Also they accept credit cards, but maybe not American express.

Stylish and traditional mediterranean food - Edit

A very nice place to spend an evening with friends (though only a few of them, the restaurant is very small and seems to have many friends in Florence).

5 e cinque is in a way a nice reminiscence of the past, decorated with old photographs in black-and-white, a simple but very stylish interior, and its crew which seemed more like a group of friends and family who enjoy having guests. Moreover, they were extremely helpful about explaining which items on the menu were vegan, or could be veganized.

The menu is very traditional, instead of asian ingredients like tofu or seitan the chef prefers classical mediterranean recipes with chick-peaks, lentils, cereals or vegetables, very basic, very stylish, though sometimes maybe at bit frugal. It does not boast of originality, but this is explicitly not its aim. This is certainly cucina povera, not cucina alto-borghese. A bit more modernisation in some place or other would not come amiss, though.

The food is light and tasty, wines (all organic, like the food) are delicious, and they even offer: ... good vegan sweets! Thank heaven for 5 e cinque!

Pros: Nice place, nice crew, Stylish, light traditional food, Not cheap, but every cent's well spent

fully vegetarian as of Aug 2014 - Edit

I and my wife went there after seeing the listing on the Happy Cow app, and realised it was literally only 30 seconds from our rented apartment! We had lunch, which was fully vegetarian, in fact when we walked in the waitress asked us if we were aware that it was vegetarian before sitting and ordering, so that brought a pleasant smile to my face. The word 'smile' is quite ironic in a way, as although the food was very decent (the to desserts we ordered were excellent), we struggled to see anyone working there smile once! We saw a total of two kitchen staff and two waitresses and literarily no one was smiling. The younger of the two looked so sullen looking it was as though everything she did for the customers was below her. This shouldn't detract from the food (which as I've said before, was quite good) and the fact that I like to support vegetarian restaurants, especially when they're in places not known for being particularly veggie friendly, but it does have some bearing on the pleasantness of the experience in my view. Hopefully this was just a bad day for them, but I feared this was the norm. try it out, but bear in mind the stern faces!

Pros: Good food, well presented, Nice, cosy little restaurant, Good, relatively quiet location

Cons: Unfriendly staff, Not enough room for larger groups, Unfriendly staff (again)

Awesome food and friendly staff - Edit

I loved this place. Having been in Italy for a few days now I had not found any real Italian food. It's all been like veggie burgers, falafel, etc. and while those are good I want some pasta! The menu was all in Italian but a sweet old man helped me and my mom decipher the menu. A good half of the menu was vegan and the other half was vegetarian. I don't know why this place is listed as veg friendly because it is all vegetarian. Me and my mom both got a spaghetti dish with olive, eggplant and tomato. It was super delicious! Then the man pointed out some vegan dessert options and I had an almond flan type thing (no eggs I just don't know how else to explain it haha). Super tasty! This place was great and the staff was super helpful. I forgot to mention that we also had some bread and the man gave us a free chickpea pancake to try while we were waiting. Both tasty :) highly recommend! I would give this a 5 but they won't let me xD

Pros: Fresh Tasty Food, Helpful/friendly staff

Delicious and perfect lunch - Edit

We stopped here for lunch on a Friday afternoon after crossing the Ponte Vecchio. Service was friendly and helpful. A man walked through the menu with us to help us with vegan options. The chickpea bread was amazing - different. We had a barley and spinach dish and an asparagus risotto which were both amazing. As other said, yes, it's small but cute and cozy. My husband and toddler son sat close to the counter in a corner that was a great spot with a small child. Highly recommended.

Pros: Great food, Cozy atmosphere

delicious! - Edit

We wandered into this resturant on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. I had the chickpea croquettes on a bed of warm, crispy vegetable salad after reading recommendation on here, omg, I could have eaten tht for ever! Veggies are hard to find in Europe it seems, so I was delighted. My husband had a foccaicia which he felt was a bit plain, I agreed. The menu was explained in English. The place is small so if there are loud ppl, or a small child in our case, the place can feel even smaller! The food was worth it though!

Pros: veggies!, variety , English

Cons: small

A treat by the Arno - Edit

A delightful eating experience. This is an intimate little place in the city centre (just over the Ponte Santa Trinita near to Santo Spirito). We're happy to report that there are now more than five tables, not counting the two outside. though be warned that when it fills up it's all very, well, cosy! Not having made a reservation we were pleased to get in on a Sunday evening and were immediately put at ease by the proprietor, who pulled up a chair and talked us in English through the menu. We had two very interesting and tasty breads as starters - one a delicious flat bread with a liquid cheese (a house special, apparently), the other a sweet one made from (we think) chick pea flour. My main was chickpea croquettes on a bed of warm, crispy vegetable salad - mouth watering. My wife had an asparagus risotto - she said it was the best of its kind she's ever had with a nice 'bite' to the rice. There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere and with many other tempting things on the menu we would certainly have returned had we been longer in the city. PS: It was interesting to see that the Italians on an adjacent table were savouring the delights of one of the guest beers - Sam Smith's organic ale, all the way from Yorkshire! Had we been allowed I'd have given 5 e Cinque five cows: We were assured that, although they sold meat products from the counter, the kitchen is exclusively vegetarian.

Pros: Warm welcome, English speaking, Great food

Cons: Tables very close together

A Gem on the Oltrarno - Edit

A classic tiny Italian trattoria complete with only 5 tables, 5 e Cinque specialized in seasonal, organic, high-quality vegetarian cuisine. The menu is exactly the right size--not overwhelming but with a big enough selection to keep both vegetarians and vegans alike quite happy. The menu also changes often, if not daily, which is the sure sign of a top-notch eatery, in my opinion.

5 e Cinque specializes in chickpea pancakes called "cecina," which are 100% vegan (made with chickpea flour, olive oil, and salt), unless you order them with a slab of highest-quality sheep's milk cheese on top. Other than cheese, they also come plain or topped with grilled vegetables that vary with the season. For my main course, I ordered a pilaf-like dish of barley and swiss chard with caramelized onions and roasted potatoes on the side. Absolutely mouthwatering and completely unexpected. My aunt introduced me to the restaurant with no pretense other than that it was organic and vegetarian, but I had no idea that I could find an incredibly wholesome, healthy meal there complete with whole grains, leafy greens, and protein (in the form of my favorite bean of all: the chickpea). The salads on the menu also looked quite good. Unfortunately, the restaurant only featured non-vegan desserts, but there is a gelateria right across the piazza with delicious vegan sorbets to satisfy your sweet tooth.

I plan to patronize 5 e Cinque quite often during my next few visits to Florence. It is truly an organic, vegetarian gem in the city.

See pictures and more restaurant reviews at my blog: http://farmersmarketvegan.wordpress.com/

Pros: Delicious food., All organic., English-speaking staff.

Cons: No vegan desserts., Size makes it hard to get a table.

Not vegetarian anymore - Edit

While the restaurant was perfectly willing to accomodate us and did have some options available, it should be noted that they are not a vegetarian establishment anymore. Regardless, the meal we had was good. A bit off the beaten path, but if you're in a pinch it's a worthwhile venture. Might need reservations.

Pros: Decent Food, Nice Atmosphere

Cons: Small, Not Vegetarian Anymore
