vegan Deliciousness - Edit

Had a wonderful meal to go after an exhausting day. Mushroom Marsala, Brussel sprouts and chocolate cheesecake. Everything was truly delicious. Staff were friendly and sweet. This is a great place to eat.

excellent vegan experience - Edit

We enjoyed our lunch in this quaint restaurant just off Main Street in Manchester. We ordered: chili (very good), tempeh pattymelt (innovative, but too much bread), burrito (good, but could use more veggies less rice), hummus wrap (excellent!), and sweet potato scallion cakes (way too bland). The spirit of the chef and waitstaff was fantastic and permeates a cool vibe at the restaurant.

Pros: great spirit, 100% vegan, fresh

Cons: food a tad bland

delicious and friendly - Edit

Had the 21 Brussels sprouts and the pineapple coconut tempeh. Both delicious. Great to sit at the bar and chat with the chef and waitress about the area and watch them work their vegan magic. Will definitely return when in the area next time.

Everyone else coming in raved about their meals as well.

Pros: options, options, options

Hidden gem - Edit

I really want to give this place 5 stars, especially for the cheese plate and desserts. However, the apps and entrees are a bit bland. I really appreciate that the chef uses fresh, local foods, and few meat substitutes, but after eating here many times, I think I finally figured out that most of the dishes could be improved with a splash of citrus or vinegar to bump up the flavor. Recently, a shredded Brussels sprouts Caesar salad was the perfect combination of crunchy and creamy, but was unfortunately lacking the bright tang of lemon. I recommend it anyway; the place is great and seriously, the cheese plate is worth a visit alone.

Surprising gem in Central CT - Edit

Hidden down a side street, 21 Oak is a warm, inviting restaurant with excellent service and delicious food. My wife and I ate lunch recently. Her Sweet Potato Scallion cakes were rich, warm, hearty, and well spiced - a true star of our dining experience. We will be back to enjoy it again in a heartbeat. I started with a Navajo chili, which I would definitely order again and a Sicilian flatbread that, while good, was the weakest plate. It's hard to contend with the sweet potato plate! The chocolate caramelized banana for dessert was a perfect note to end on with an almond milk latte. We will most certainly be back for lunch or dinner. Excellent spot and highly recommended!!

I love the foods at this place. Plant based, not a lot of fake meats, and incredibly creative. New and unique flavors that you don't find at all other vegan places.

American vegan eclectic cuisine at its best - Edit

Entering 21 Oak is like stepping back into the past, namely 25 years ago into It’s Only Natural. I mean this as a very good thing. Think back to 1990, when Ken Bergeron was still the head chef and owner of ION 1.0 at its original location on Main St, a block north of where ION 3.0 recently relocated. The décor was simple and yet comfortable, the vegan food wholesome and appealing (Ken, along with most of his faithful customers, had transitioned out of macrobiotics), the portions generous, and the prices just right. Likewise now for 21 Oak. Eerily, Shawn the head chef and owner of 21 Oak even bears a very striking resemblance to Ken both in looks and in peaceful demeanor.

While Manchester may be out of the way, once within Manchester 21 Oak is easy to find, a half a block off Main St in the center of downtown. The restaurant is small (seats 20), hence the menu is brief, but covers the breadth of American vegan eclectic cuisine. No mock meats here, which only make a mockery of vegetarianism. Instead vegetables and grains take the center stage that they deserve. My only complaint is something served but not made here, the flatbread made of white flour, which however can be substituted with whole grain and oil-free Mary’s Gone Crackers, so do ask instead for the crackers. Among the appetizers I highly recommend the Brussels sprouts and the beet chutney, among the sides the sweet potato mash (only $3!), and among the entrees the barley cakes.

While desserts vary daily, I recommend the raw vegan cheesecake, which in January 2016 cost only $6. For the same quality and same quantity, compare that with $15 charged at G-Zen. As G-Zen costs an arm and an leg, 21 Oak costs only a finger and a toe. Consequently I dare say that 21 Oak is my favorite veg restaurant in all of CT and RI.

Pros: the food, the prices, easy parking

Cons: in out-of-the-way Manchester

Delicious Vegan Meal for 6! - Edit

Have to say that the meal we had was absolutely delicious, and the price for four adults and two children worked out at a reasonable $12 each. Portions were good. Food quality excellent, expertly prepared. Service and ambiance were also good, making the whole experience enjoyable. A big sheet of drawing paper on the table plus high quality crayons for drawing while waiting was a big plus for the kids and helpful for the adults. I liked the sauteed Brussel sprouts, and the Peruvian roast potato soup (one of the day's specials), both for being tasty and for having no or few onions (I'm not a big fan of onions and it isn't easy to find vegan meals without them). Overall this was a great first time visit to this valuable resource for this part of Connecticut. Our son and daughter-in-law will be eating here again (they are local, we're just visiting). I personally hope this venture is very successful and is a permanent fixture for Manchester, CT.

Pros: Expert chef and friendly staff, Wholesome ingredients, tastily prepared, Vegan
