yummalicious *update*

12 Jan 2007

*Originally posted September 20:*

I was delighted to have found a great vegan restaurant on Whidbey Island! I went with my non-veg parents and we were all very, very impressed. Each dish we had was freshly prepared and quite tasty. I especially enjoyed my 'rawsome wrap' which far surpassed my original expectations. The owner was very friendly, informative, and enthusiastic about the raw/vegan diets and her lovely restaurant and store. She was also very helpful and knowledgeable when it came to the products for sale in the store. Unfortunately, I don't live on the island, but whenever I visit my parents I'll be sure to stop by for a bite to eat. I highly recommend Living Green.

*Update:*
I now live in Los Angeles and have tried many vegan and/or raw restaurants in the area and though some of them are quite good, nothing I've had has lived up to the rawsome wrap I had at Living Green, and most of them lack the warm and welcoming atmosphere and staff Living Green has. I can't wait until my next trip to Washington!

very good

not only is the atmosphere really nice here (even though it's a pretty large and busy place they manage to keep it feeling very warm and cozy) but the food is great! I went with my mother and two friends and we all enjoyed it very much. Not everything is vegan or vegeterian but everything is clearly marked, and the waiters are more than happy to answer any questions you may have. We started with a lentil spinach soup that was very good, and while both of our friends got non vegan dishes, my mother got the Mediterranean Torta, which was delicious but we were both blown away by what I ordered, one of specials of the day, the Posole Vegetable Stew. It was amazing! Unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert, but they had a large variety with a lot of vegan options, and our friends we were with, who are from Santa Barbara, said they're all very good. Next time I'm up in Santa Barbara, I'll make sure I leave some room to try one.

nothing spectacular, but tasty nonetheless.

though i have never dined in at vegan plate, i often order some food for take out. They have mostly thai food, with some burgers, wraps, and random sides thrown in. I have had their pad thai with soy chicken (pretty good), P.E.T. with tofu (also pretty good), spicy eggplant with tofu (decent but nice and spicy!), the lentil wrap (bland, skip it), glass noodle salad (decent), papaya salad (would have been pretty good if the tomatoes had been a bit more flavourful but i don't think that's their fault), banana spring rolls (a tasty, albeit, not very healthy dessert) the vegan smoothie (very good), and the item that keeps me coming back, the freshy rolls (really healthy, i get them every time i go and they're always delicious, and the sauce they come with is nice) Vegan plate has a good menu with a variety of options, and though i haven't been blown away by some of the stuff i've had, there's plenty of other things i can't wait to try. And though i personally am not a fan of mock meats (though i don't mind the soy chicken in the freshy rolls ) if you like them, vegan plate has a nice variety of ones to choose from. the main draw back is if you're going to dine in, parking can be difficult, though on busy nights there is valet for the strip mall.

my favourite indian restaurant in iowa city

Masala has really nice menu that clearly labels what is vegan and what isn't. I find the food to be delicious, and it's a very good value. It's also a great place to bring friends who aren't vegan/vegetarian, because although everything on the menu is vegan/vegetarian, everybody always finds something they love.

I love the co-op

21 Sep 2006

Even with Tait's opening up downtown, I still prefer the co-op. They grocery store has a lot to offer, and the deli clearly labels everything as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. Most of their sandwhiches are delicious, my favourite is the cashew on a hot tin roof, and they usually have a really nice selection of soups. They also have great freshly made breads, and a nice offering of vegan muffins/cookies if you're looking for some junk food. The supernutty cookie is my guilty pleasure. The Coralridge location also has a salad bar and a juice/smoothie bar. The only drawback is that it can get expensive if you're not a member.

their pita chips are addictive

21 Sep 2006

This is another great place that will leave both you and your non-veg friends satisfied. The falafel pita (try it on the whole wheat) is vegan and absolutely delicious and they offer pitas with meat for the non-vegetarians. Also amazing are their freshly made pita chips. Probably not the healthiest, but they are definately worth it. Their hummus is great too and also available for sale at New PIoneer, Tait's, John's, and Hy-Vee.

what a fun place

12 Jan 2007

unfortunately i don't live near here, but a friend does and i'm so glad he brought to check it out. there's a great juice bar where you can get some good wheatgrass shots and they also have a nice deli area, and some prepared food from Leaf Cuisine and some other companies/places. They have a small but sufficient produce section, though i thought their selection of organic fruit was a bit lacking. They also carry all sorts of packaged health foods and drinks as well as bulk grains (though i didn't see any quinoa...). My favourite part however was the awesome tea/spice/herb room upstairs and in the back. What a great selection of some hard to find stuff! Though it's a little out of my way I'll definately be making may way back to One Life soon!

nice cheap food

21 Sep 2006

Though not my favourite restaurant in Iowa City it's still a great place to grab a bite to eat. Plenty of vegan/vegetarian options, and you can add tofu to whatever you order for some extra protein. They offer pasta bowls, rice bowls, salads, and soups.
