worth a visit
26 Sep 2011
This is a bakery/cafe which service a wide range of pre-made sandwiches, cookies, brownies and muffins - some of which are vegan. Everything is clearly labelled. All drinks can be made with soya milk in place of dairy milk.
Everything I tried was good (but not spectacular). I paid $3.50 for a sandwich, which I thought was reasonable value for money. It can get very busy at weekends.

As trendy a vegetarian spot as you're likely to find
04 Jul 2016
This is a newly opened bar on Javastraat in the Oost area of Amsterdam, across the road from the Walter Woodbury bar (and under the same ownership, I believe). It is very modern and trendy with nice decor and ambiance.
The food is very good by pub/bar standards, but not quite at the level of the better Amsterdam vegetarian restaurants.
The starters cost between €6 and €10, and are all vegan. The summer rolls are nice but not as good as those you'll find at Vietnamese restaurants.
The mains cost between €12 and €15, and about half are vegan or can be made vegan upon request. The burger and fries were excellent.
The desserts costs around €5 each. Vegan options include sorbet, carrot cake, and dairy-free cheesecake.
The highlight for me were the bar snacks, especially the vegan bitterballen (vegan versions of thos classic Dutch bar snack as very difficult to find). The drinks menu is excellent, and includes craft beer, decent wine, Dutch liquors (from Wynand Fockink) and a massive selection of bourbons and whiskeys.
All in all, I was impressed, though please note that Bar James it is more of a bar than a restaurant.

Excellent frozen yogurts - mostly dairy-free
30 Jan 2015
Well worth a visit for the build-your-own dairy-free frozen yogurts. All of the yogurt flavours were vegan-friendly except one. Nice range of toppings (fruits, nuts, sauces) but when I visited the staff were not 100% certain about which confectionery items were suitable for vegans.
Definitely worth visiting on a hot day!

very nice little restaurant

Excellent little cafe-style restaurant, although it's not much to look at. Very large menu, including lots of soya meat dishes. I would recommend the fried aubergine with basil. Staff are friendly and speak fairly good English.

Good value for money, but not vegan-friendly
17 Oct 2012
Cafe deux Soleils is a dark and rustic joint. It is not very vegan friendly, although I did find that my tofu scramble was quite tasty and offered good value for money. I also saw that they had smoothies made using vegan alternatives to milk.
Not a brilliant experience overall, but my food was OK.

One of the best places I've ever eaten as a vegan
16 Oct 2014
I can't speak highly enough of this place. Huge menu, all 100% vegan. Very good if you like mock-meat. Particularly strong on breakfast/brunch items (e.g. pancakes, huevos rancheros). The coffee is excellent and bottomless. I highly recommend the Cubano sandwich. The cheesecake was the best I've ever eaten - could not believe that it was completely dairy-free.
I didn't see any signage indicating that Champs is a vegan (or even a vegetarian) restaurant. My omnivorous friend (who lives in Brooklyn) has eaten there a couple of times before and only discovered when visiting with me that the chicken sub that he order last time didn't actually have any chicken in it.
Champs is a bit of a local institution - be prepared to have to wait for a table.

Very good asset for Phoenix

Nice neighbourhood cafe. I was suffering from jet lag so was delighted to find somewhere open at 3am that served good vegan food. Aside of Heart doesn't have much in the way of typical breakfast items (although I was told that they have a brunch menu on the weekends) but their quesadillas and pizzas did the job nicely.
Juices and smoothies are made fresh. Large range of sweet treats such as cookies and brownies - all 100% vegan.
It's a shame that I didn't manage to visit during the day because I've been told that they have a really good range of food then...at night the options are more limited, but you'll definitely find something tasty.
The manager (I think he was the manager, anyway) was friendly and passionate about the vegan lifestyle.
Very good asset for Phoenix in a fairly central location.

Full of colour

Really like this place. Just a few minutes walk away from the Rambla. The meal deals are particularly good value, and the Indian thali is highly recommended. Extensive menu which includes snacks, sandwiches, salads, soups, full meals, and a large variety of juices. Very colourful decor which makes eating here a particularly unique experience.

Small, charming little cafe in the town centre. Open at lunchtimes only. All you can eat buffet with plenty of different dishes - salads (with a variety of dressings), grains, lentils, bread, soup, bakes and quiches.
When I visited in January 2012, the price was €14 for lunch.
Outstanding for vegetarians, but slightly disappointing for vegans as most of the hot dishes (and some of the salads) contained cheese. But well worth a visit.
If you're in the area in the evening (when La Catine Vegetarienne is closed), I noticed that there is an Chinese restaurant called Le Dalat (on the corner of Rue des Bernardines and Rue de la Couronne) which has a set vegetarian/vegan menu for €14.

Excellent all-round eating experience

Superb restaurant. The food looks and tastes wonderful, and the staff are very friendly. 10 minute walk from Haupbanhof (main train station).
I had a three course meal:
- starter: raw beetroot ravioli (little discs of crunchy beetroot with soft cashew nut cheese and pickles)
- main: tempeh cutlets served on a bed of caramelised chicoree, with carot/potato puree and a spicy relish
- dessert: raw kiwi trifle
All three courses were very good, the main in particular. Total cost (including a glass of German wine) was 36 euros excluding service.
The menu was large and varied. It was in German but reasonably easy to understand with the assistance of the waitress. It's not in the nicest part of town but very easy to get to by foot from central Berlin.
Note that the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays.

Decent bar, but food isn't anything special
18 Aug 2010
Other Side Cafe is more of a bar than a cafe or restaurant. More than half of all items of the menu are vegetarian, many of which are suitable for vegans.
The food was OK; I was more impressed by the great range of alcoholic drinks. It's a relaxed environment with a good music policy - a nice place to hang out.

Great value weekend lunch special
17 Oct 2012
I had the weekend lunch special, which was a bargain at $9.99. This included a vegetable spring roll, a small bowl of vegetable soup, rice, choice of stir fry dish, and a small dessert.
The food was tasty and filling, if a little on the greasy side. My stir fry - soya spirals and eggplant on a bed of spinach - was very nice.
Service was polite but a little unresponsive.

All-Mexican menu featuring nachos, enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos - all items are vegan and gluten-free. Most mains cost $8, and the taco of the days cost $5. I'd say that one dish per person is not enough for a filling meal. But most dishes seem to be good for sharing. There are a couple of vegan desserts too, but I didn't try them.
Most, but not all, of the dishes feature fake chorizo and/or fake cheese (made in-house from nutritional yeast). I enjoyed my meal, but be aware that the food is pretty spicy. The waiter will warn you about this - if you want a little less fire, just ask.
The restaurant could be mistaken for a trendy bar - decent music but a little loud for a restaurant ambience in my opinion; dark with brightly lit tables - in fact, so dark that I couldn't really see my food very well!
It's open late, which is awesome. And the service was excellent.

Decent menu consisting of pasta, goulash, sandwiches, burgers and salads. Food is good quality but not exceptional. I enjoyed the vegan burger, which was very filling. Didn't have any desserts but none appeared to be suitable for vegans. Prices are reasonable.
Vegehana is a welcome find in a city where grilled meats are king. It is in a very handy location just by the old town. However, I wouldn't recommend it for a slow, romantic dinner - try Karuzo instead.

Good option for a quick lunch
18 Aug 2010
This is one of several food trucks that serve lunch on the MIT campus between 1100 and 1500. It sells a number of decent $5 sandwiches / burgers in pitta (BBQ seitan, chickpea fritter; soy BLT; sweet potato). It also does some tasty fries with rosemary for $3.
Decent quality fast food - 100% vegetarian, and very easy for vegans. Highly recommended. There are also falafel and Thai/Vietnamese food trucks nearby which do a range of veg options.

Nice restaurant but not great for vegans
02 Apr 2010
Very upmarket restaurant with a nice ambience. All dishes were tasty and immaculately presented. However, my two main issues are that (i) vegans are not well catered for, and (ii) I wasn't particularly full even after a three-course dinner.
It's also quite tricky to find! Once on Behrenstraße, turn right immediately after the 'Umlauf' hairdresser, and then right again into an underground passage. You need to ring the bell to get in.

First rate fast food cafe
11 Jul 2010
First rate fast food cafe, 100% vegan. Great bocadillos (sandwiches), snacks, juices and cakes. Very helpful and enthusiastic staff. It also has a 'vegan deli' with an impressive variety of vegan cheeses and fake meats.
The location is also very pleasant - you can either eat in the cafe or in the square.
As of June 2010, Gopal is open between 10am and 12 midnight, 7 days a week.

Green has a huge menu comprising lots of interesting starters, salads and bowl food, as well as pizzas, sandwiches and burgers. All vegan with a special gluten-free menu.
Many of the mains come with a choice of mock meat, fried tofu or fresh tofu, but if that's not your thing don't worry, as they don't exactly skimp on the vegetables.
My food wasn't bad, although I found that the vegetables in my bowl were very large for my liking (difficult to eat with the tiny fork I was provided with!).
For dessert, go next door to the sister dessert cafe (Nami) where they serve huge $5 vegan ice cream sundae/milkshake concoctions made using Soy Dream, amongst other treats.
