In a great location. I stopped in after shopping at union square and before a play and had a nice light dinner and it was really nice. I didn't like that they don't serve alcohol and they don't take reservations.

I was really looking forward to eating at Candle 79. I had heard of it as the best veg restaurant in NY with a huge following. Because I eat gluten free there weren't as many options for me. I don't even remember what I had, but it was not very good at all. But the wine was delicious, the starter of oyster mushrooms was yummy, the service was very good, and it is a lovely spot.
Let me know if you can recommend a good GF main dish!

I love this restaurant. It is so cute and I had the best lentil soup with truffle oil ever...I still dream about it, but I haven't seen it on the menu for a while (but I am only in town a few times a year). And I love that they have a gluten free menu! I definitely recommend.

great spot

I visit Franchia almost every time I am in town. It has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the food is always amazing. Saw some reviews that said it was over priced, and it can get pricey with appetizers and drinks, but a simple meal is certainly worth the cost. The dumplings are always amazing and I love the Shanghai style rice noodles with tofu substituted for the lobster balls.

I can't say how much I love HanGawi. I crave it constantly and I go every time I am in town ... sometimes twice! The tofu stone bowl is out of this world and, unfortunately or fortunately, I get it every time I am there so I can't say much about the other main dishes. I love the hangawi salad and the stuffed shiitake mushrooms are so yummy. A beautiful restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere and very good service. One of the two best (vegan) restaurants in NY. Make sure you make a reservation.
