This is a tough one for me. This is the kind of place that I wish I could rave about. The atmosphere and setting are lovely. The staff is friendly. The only problem is that the food is really bad.
I have given this place many chances because I really wanted to like it there. I kept telling myself that it may have been an "off night" for them in the kitchen. Last night was my 5th time there and I sat with food that was barely edible.
The salad was soaked with dressing (and not a good dressing), the roasted beets were way too salty, the entrees were bland and mushy, the chickpea dip was bland. I honestly can't say one good thing about the food - and I'm not a very picky person. I enjoy just about every other restaurant that's listed on this site.
Perhaps the meat items are good. But if you are a vegan or vegetarian I would advise you to stay away.

Best Vegetarian Restaurant

THis is my favorite vegetarian restaurant in Ann Arbor. It is also the best vegetarian and vegan food that I've ever had - and I LOVE indian food.
Everything is clearly labeled if it is vegan (and almost everything is vegan).
The owner is a very nice couple. She does ALL of the cooking. You can taste the love.
I just wish they would open a 2nd location in the Detroit area.

If you are a vegetarian you should stay far away from any prepared item made at Plum Market. The cabbage soup which was labeled as vegan was actually made with a tomato sauce that had anchovies (fish ) in it. A staff member confided this to me and then I verified that it was true with the chef and the manager. They told me that they were going to switch tomato sauces, but my insider at Plum tells me that they are still using the same sauce with fish and labeling the soup as being vegan. I was told by this staff member at Plum that this happens a lot. She told me that if you are a vegetarian that you should not be eating here. I advise any vegetarians and vegans to do the same.

According to the woman who works here "they sometimes use ghee (butter) and sometimes don't". You are taking a chance every time you go there that the cook is still there and can answer the vegan questions. Then there's the language barrier (they don't know the term "vegan").
Vegans should avoid this place and head straight to Udipi in Farmington Hills. The food is better and they will be able to tell you exactly what is vegan.

This is not a bad restaurant. And they've been around forever. The food is not bad, but nothing to write home about. Service is friendly and the atmosphere is nice. I've had some good meals here but would advise you to eat at Earthen Jar instead (which is only 50 yards away).

SORRY TO SAY............

I have been a vegetarian for 40+ years. This hurts me to write this because I want to be able to support all things vegetarian.
However, i must tell you that what I witnessed today needs to be shared with the community.
I sat at a table near the bar. The man working behind the juice bar was eating his own lunch while working. He was eating nachos using his hands (as most of us do). He would then proceed to cut up vegetables and fruit for smoothies and juices he was making. Then he would handle the money in the cash register. Then back to the smoothie and raw juice making. Then he was texting on his phone. Then back to cutting up fruit.
All of this WITHOUT WASHING HANDS AND WITHOUT GLOVES.
I called the manager over (Lauren). She watched with me as he ate and made juices. She agreed with me that this was not acceptable and that she would take care of it. Lauren then went into her office without discussing this with this man.
The man continued eating chips, texting on his phone, handling money for the cash register, and making juices and smoothies - again without washing hands and without gloves.
I called Lauren back over to tell her that he was still not washing and/or using gloves. She told me that she didn't yet have time to speak with him.
Our waiter was kind enough to share with us how he was appalled he was with the cleanliness.
I have been going to Seva (in Ann Arbor) for 25 years but this was the end for me.

Delicious and fresh

This place is a hidden gem. It amazes me that more people don't know about it. Vegetarian (and mostly vegan) deli which specializes in raw food (but still has some great cooked dishes). The nutty nori rolls are out of this world. Everything is tasty and very unique. You can't go wrong with anything.
2 bits of advice:
1. Try the Pegasus drink. OUTSTANDING!
2. Book a massage there with Matt or Christine. The first visit is 1/2 off. After that it is $50 for Matt or $60 for Christine. You will swear it was the best massage of your life.
