Delicious, creative and wholesome lunch spot
27 Apr 2012
I loved my lunch at Avalon, everything about this restaurant put a smile on my face- the friendly and helpful staff, the homely decor, the location next to the castle and of course the very delicious, yet real and wholesome food. My partner and I shared a table with two locals who informed us that Avalon is indeed the best vegan restaurant in Gent, and I would say that it could be one of the best vegan restaurants I've ever eaten at! What I liked about my lunch (the tofu pie/ quiche) was that it was served with a variety of sides, each with a distinct flavour that brought out the original taste and goodness of the ingredient. My partner loved his tempeh rueben, which was also served with the various sides. The deserts were also really great... I couldn't resist the walnut tart! All in all, I'd highly recommend eating at Avalon, its the type of restaurant you could fall in love with, the food was made with so much care and thoughtfulness.

OK for a quick and easy meal

As far as Thai food goes, this place isn't very good... It's rather bland in terms of spiciness... and when I eat Thai I want something that excites the palate. That said, I put this place in a category of it's own, it's quick, cheapish, and filling and of course vegan!
There is an a la carte menu here but most of their business is via the bain-marie, which features around 8 dishes, all of which come with fried rice, noodles or plain rice.

Quite bland and average

I went here for breakfast a few weeks ago and I must say I was VERY disappointed. On the basis of the all the glowing reviews here, I had high expectations of an outstanding vegan cafe, but instead I would say the food was at best bland and boring, and dare I say it... this place gives vegan food a bad name. I feel bad not writing a glowing review, because I WANT to support vegan businesses, but ultimately perhaps some critical feedback might be what this cafe needs in order to boost business (it was pretty much empty on a Sat morning).
The main problem I had with the food was that it lacked creativity, and was extremely under-seasoned. If I had been served a similar breakfast in a non-vegan cafe, I would have put the blandness down to a lack of understanding of vegan cooking, but at a vegan cafe, there is no excuse...

EXACTLY what Enmore/ Newtown needed! YUM!

Vegan comfort food! YAY! I love this place, especially the schnitzel burger, with the lot! The smokey rasher bacon is particularly delish :)
Polish off a burger on site and buy some vegan sausages to cook at home too!
It would really incredible if this place continues to thrive, and maybe it could be of a sit down affair... (at the moment there are just a few seats, not really a sit-down cafe, more of a take-away vibe).
Anyway, thanks Spoons, you give me faith in existence/ Sydney.

Best vegan burgers ever!!
26 Apr 2012
If you want cheap, tasty vege/ vegan fastfood then De Frietketel is your place! Although this places serves meat, the vege menu is much larger than the meaty one. There are around 20 different vege burgers/ snacks. So far I've tried only two burgers, and they were both really delicious, and the fries were great too (also a very generous portion!) Also, the vegan items are marked by an asterisk.
All in all I've tried a lot of vegan junk food and burgers, and I can say these burgers are the best/ most authentic I've tasted. Don't go to Frietketel however if you like 'healthy' tasting vege burgers. I think everything here is deep fried :)

Delicious vegan Chinese, with plenty of mock!

I've been going to Green Gourmet since they opened more than 10 years ago, and I must say, it keeps on getting better, if not also more expensive (!).
Green Gourmet offers À la carte as well as a buffet that is charged by weight. I used to always order off the menu, which is probably slightly fresher and better quality than the buffet, but lately I've found myself grabbing a quick dinner for the buffet- it's very convenient!
Probably the best aspect of Green Gourmet is the Yum Cha on Sat and Sundays. Make sure you get there early when it's busy because that way you'll get the best variety of yum cha.

Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, limited for vegan
17 May 2012
I've been to Greenway 3 times now, and have always found the staff to be really nice and helpful. They happily translate the menu, and point out vegan items (also marked by a carrot on menu). I also like the casual atmosphere of Greenway, it has a relaxed feel. The food however isn't amazing... I really want to like it, but everytime I've been there I'd rate my dish only 5 out of 10 in terms of imagination and flavour. There are also only a limited number of vegan options, and things that could easily be made vegan (like the pesto and the thai curry) are not vegan, which is disappointing. I'm a vegan, but my partner, who eats cheese and eggs, always enjoys his meal more than me, which leaves me to conclude this resto is great for lacto-ovo vegos, but not for vegans.
I've had the chilli beans and rice, the bolognese, and the vege burger. The vege burger was the best of the lot, but still kind of dry. The chilli beans and the bolognese just didn't have enough flavour... Anyway, Greenway is totally OK, if you're hungry and need to eat something quick, but it's not particularly inspiring.

Delicious hearty vegan German food
11 Jun 2012
Hillier serves up some of the best vegan German food I've ever tasted! I enjoyed an evening menu of avocado salad for starter, crispy seitan, potatoes and creamy mushrooms for main, and a desert plate comprised of three different deserts- all for 17 euros.

Western style vegan buffet
26 Apr 2012
It is important to book at Komkommertijd, we arrived one afternoon without a booking to be turned away, but have since been back after booking a table in advance. This place is very popular. The food was average, definitely not particularly gourmet, but I enjoyed it none the less. Notably, the soup was delicious, but the items on the main buffet weren't as tasty... That said I'm not really a fan of the whole buffet concept.

The vegan Opera Cake is to die for!
26 Apr 2012
A tiny all vegetarian and very vegan friendly restaurant in the Marais, just down the road from the Pompidou, which serves primarily French/ European cuisine. The food was really delicious, and the portions generous- the style was homey yet carefully prepared with interesting flavours, just what I love! But the real highlight for me was the desert... an absolutely devine, delicate, moist Opera Cake.... something I would never had thought could be made vegan... I loved it so much I wanted to go back the next day and buy one of each of their patisseries just to try them all.
Also, they have the menu in English.

Overpriced buffet food which lacks flavour
11 May 2012
I enjoyed the piece of cake I had a Lekker GEC, but I have to say the salad bar and warm buffet was truly disappointing; bland and boring vege food which lacked imagination. There was a choice of 5 different warm items that all seemed like vege sides (stewed cabbage, plain white rice, zucchini stew, roasted potatoes and a vege stir fry) to a main dish that was absent. This food was definitely not the kind of food I would go out for! If I didn't know better I'd suspect that non-vegetarians designed the menu (people that don't understand how to make innovative and exciting vegan food).
It was pretty expensive for what it was too- all up we paid 35 euros for two reasonably small plates of food (you are charged by weight of food on plate), 2 glasses of wine and a piece of cake. They charge you 2 euros per person service fee, even though you serve yourself and also clean up after your self. I probably would have forgiven the unimaginative food if say it was really cheap. I understand this place is run by volunteers, well where does the money for this overpriced food go? Are they fundraising for something? Yeah, generally not impressed with this place... If you are visiting Gent I'd recommend the lunchtime spot Avalon 100 times over Lekker GEC.

NO VEGAN MENU ANYMORE*** NEW OWNERS
27 Jul 2012
I went to Little Treasures today after hearing good reviews of the vegan menu, but unfortunately it's been sold and new owners aren't as vegan friendly. There is one vegan sandwich and a vegan soup on the menu, but i didn't try.

Great food, too bad about the cult vibe.
26 Apr 2012
Straight up I will say I disliked the ambiance of this restaurant... it was extremely uncool and I felt like I was at a cross between a fast food restaurant and a cult's dining room (and not in a good way). Even the waitress was in an 'Loving Hut' uniform... I feel like this aesthetic really let the restaurant down, as the food was actually really good, but I would be hesitant to eat there again due to the the clinical vibe.
Anyway, as I said the food was indeed very tasty, and skillfully prepared. I had the vegan crepe, my partner had the vegan 'quiche', and for desert we shared an extraordinary vegan cheese cake. Compliments to the chef!

It's true! Lucky Leek is vegan fine dining heaven!
11 Jun 2012
After reading all these great reviews of Lucky Leek I knew I HAD to eat there during my short trip to Berlin... and I've very very glad I did. The food was perfect. Beautifully prepared and presented with interesting and balanced flavours. This is the type of restaurant that makes me excited about the possibilities for vegan cuisine!!
The staff were friendly, and they have an English menu. But make sure you book, it was very busy, even on a Sunday night. Oh yeah, and I thought it was very reasonably priced around 60 euro for 2 people (shared starter, 2 mains, 2 deserts, 2 glasses of wine).

Excellent vegan breakfast!
16 Jan 2013
This place offers one of the best, if not THE BEST vegan breakfast in Sydney. It consists of a polenta tofu stack with fresh avocado amongst other yummy goodies. I believe it's also gluten free. I went for breakfast with a group and everyone was jealously eyeing off my breakfast, because Mad Spuds makes the extra effort to make a vegan breakfast creative and exciting.
I haven't actually tried anything else on the menu, but I think there are a few other good vegan options.
The coffee is excellent too.

The most incredible vegan brownie sundae!
26 Apr 2012
I've only eaten at Sage once, as I don't live in LA, but OMG this place is absolutely incredible! If I remember correctly I had the Soul Bowl, which was a tasty mix of black beans, quinoa, deep fried mac and cheese ball, and the most delicious horseradishy sauce I've ever tasted.. My partner had the Hawaii burger which was also one the the best burgers I've ever tasted. For desert we shared the brownie sundae with salted caramel sauce... drooollll!!!
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I dream of heading back to LA one day to eat here again...

Nice casual atmosphere for lunch or a snack
26 Apr 2012
Tasty World is a small cafe, that has the decor of a chain store juice bar. They offer fresh juices, and have a small selection of burgers, hot dogs and a daily soup. I enjoyed a healthy vegan burger and a green vege soup. The soup in particular was very nice. The staff were helpful, and the food tasted fresh and was prepared very quickly.

Excellent Thai that caters well for veges
16 Jan 2013
I've been frequently Thai Pathong for years and have seen the vege menu consistently grow, and they now have an exclusive vegan menu. My personal fave is the mock duck salad and the tofu choo chee.
The service is excellent, and a good place to go if you're with meat-eaters who won't go to a vege resto.
PS. There is another Thai Pathong in Marrickville which doesn't have the same vego options unfortunately.
