Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
I grew up in the hot dog business in New York City. My Dad was a jobber, delivering hot dogs and rolls to pushcarts throughout the metropolitan area. And I learned to absolutely love hot dogs. Ate a lot of them. Fast forward to 2010 when I had a heart blockage and underwent single vessel coronary artery bypass surgery. If I knew then what I know now about healthful vegan eating, I probably could have avoided surgery! I became a low fat whole foods plant based person, have prevented and reversed my heart disease, and now at 65 years old I am healthier than I ever have been! Thats why I prefer to eat vegan.

Its great being in touch with like-minded individuals who share a passion for good healthy food. HappyCow is that community.
Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
I love and live in the Virgin Islands on my sailboat Bel Ami. My wife and I are living our dream life, and we take people sailing around the islands. Places I've lived and been to that I've liked include the entire east caribbean islands, Bahamas, midwest (spent most of my adulthood in Madison, Wisconsin), sailing the great lakes, Pacific Northwest/Puget Sound/San Juan Islands, the Rocky Mountains, New York City (grew up on Long Island), England, Wales, France, Italy, Switzerland, Holland. I'd like to eventually sail around the world.

The basics of low fat, whole foods plant based nutrition are my favorites: salads, raw veggies, smoothies, all kinds of beans, brown rice, pasta. All my meals are constructed around what type of starch I'll be eating (thanks, Dr. McDougall) and I go from there.
Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
China Study, McDougall, Esselstyn, Ornish form the basis of my library. There are many other great ones that promote whole foods plant based nutrition. Forks Over Knives is the favorite movie.
