- About:
- After being a Vegetarian for 26 years, this summer I took a leap into going VEGAN, and I am proud of myself for giving up my beloved cheese! I have been cooking new vegan recipes every night for my (non-veg) hubby and myself. I bought 3 of Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's cookbooks and have been enjoying trying out many of the dishes. I attended a class that she taught recently and she was inspiring. I also would like to note that like her, I too, moved from New Jersey to California's Bay Area, and we are both Pisceans as well! What are the odds? hahaha... We are going to Vegas next week so I am looking for great Vegan meals there, and will be going to Maui in December, so more searching on Happy Cow will be in order for me. I realized last night, that if I change "Vegas" by one letter...it can become "Vegan"! Cool, no?

More About Me
Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
I have a deep compassion for ALL animals. I grew up being served meat and dairy and didn't question it much. However, I always had a nagging feeling in my belly, that it wasn't right to eat the meat. When I was 23, it finally hit me, and I became a vegetarian. I was the only person in my family to do that, so I was on my own. I wasn't sure about going vegan for the next 26 years, but then I learned a lot by going to "Wellness Club" classes and seeing a film or two, and then discovered Oakland Veg Week. Now I am a volunteer for the 2nd year in a row, and have been vegan for two years! I also learned that cheese can cause cancer - which I had 12 years ago...so that really was an eye opener for me. So I am cooking and eating dairy free, to save my life by eating healthier, and helping my husband to do the same. I also would like to help save our planet by not consuming animals and encouraging others to do likewise.
I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I want to know where I can dine out and actually find good vegan choices. It still feels challenging after two years as a vegan. I also like to share ideas about vegan foods and lifestyle.
Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
Been to and liked: Maui,Las Vegas,Napa,Turks& Caicos island "Providenciales", Cancun, Jamaica,Bermuda,Montreal,JAPAN,Arizona,Grand Canyon,San Diego, New York city (grew up across the river in N.J.)... I'd like to visit: Antigua,Saint Lucia,Italy,Paris,Greece, and Seattle!
Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:
Beyond Meat vegan chicken strips, Gardein "Chicken" Scallopini,Daiya Monterey Jack cheese shreds, Boca burgers "chicken burgers",Green tofu veggie curry, vegan macaroni and cheese
Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
Vegan Cookbooks that I own and use a LOT: Betty goes Vegan (fun but not low cal), Color Me Vegan, The Vegan Table, The Joy of Vegan Baking (these 3 are all by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau),and I JUST tonight bought my signed copy of "Afro-Vegan" by Bryant Terry at his Oakland Veg Week talk, food sampling and book signing event!
