More About Me
Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
I have always preferred vegetables, grains and fruit to meat. I was a vegetarian BK (before kids) but quit because I felt I wasn't get enough protein into my picky-eater of a son. Recently, my husband's cardiologist told him if he didn't want to have another by-pass surgery in 5 years he should become Vegan. That was the impetus. However, it also makes me feel good to be doing something that not only helps me, but is a more sustainable way of living. Helps me; help the planet; hurts the companies that profit from inhumane treatment of animals. Win-Win-Win. Oh, an added bonus: I've lost 12 pounds in 2 months and am not counting calories!
I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I was looking for restaurant reviews and bumped into the site. I liked the content.
Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
My favorite trip was to Australia. The people were so real and out-spoken I simply loved them, and the animals so different from anywhere else on earth. I found China to be the most interesting country I've visited because I knew the least about the culture before going there and the people shattered all the stereotypes reported in the US Press. It is changing so fast. I don't think even the Chinese government is prepared for where this country is heading. I enjoyed France. Again - shattered stereotypes. I had always heard that the French were snobs and didn't like Americans. I found everyone to be friendly and very understanding about my horrible accent when I tried to speak French. I've been told Paris is the most beautiful city in the world. I didn't believe it. I was wrong. Peru was fantastic. I went to see Machu Picchu but found I was more intrigued by the Amazon. The people may be impoverished, but they are so rich in generosity and friendship. Seeing Italy was a dream of mine since I took Latin in high school. It's the only country I've been to twice and will go again and again. Greece was a surprise. It is a third world country - and I wasn't expecting that. However, seeing the ruins was awesome. The British Museum was in itself worth the trip to London. Since both sides of my family immigrated from Germany, going there was very special to me. There are so many places I still want to see - St Petersburg, Eastern Europe, British Isles, Costa Rica, Vietnam, South Africa, Brazil. There are other places I would go if I could feel safer - like Egypt and Mexico,
Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:
Any kind of vegetable. Any kind of legume. Breads, rice and pasta. Herbs, herbs, herbs! I like dishes with an ethnic flavor - Italian, Mexican, Chinese and Indian are my favorites. I'm finding I am not that fond of tofu, seitan and tempeh although I eat them occasionally.
Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
