| Becoming a vegan ......... On day 3 Hello happy cow I just started a vegan diet, 3 days in, and just wanted to interact with others for advice. I'm currently overweight and am doing this to lose that weight, but have read Skinny Bastard, Forks over Knives and the China Study, so am aware of the other health benefits beyond losing weight. I also realize there is more to veganism than diet, but this is where I feel it's best for me to learn and benefit from this lifestyle. I'm really trying to focus on eating whole grain pasta/brown rice, wheat bread, fruits and veggies. Right now I am pretty motivated, but know I will crave meat during these first couple of weeks. Any tips on meat substitutes? If anyone has advice for a true beginner, it would be much appreciated. Post Date: 02/15/13, Replies: 10 | ||
| becoming a vegetarian hi, i have been doing some soul searching recently about this issue. i have decided that veg*ism is the right road for me. it will probably take some time for me to completly transform, so i will take it one step at a time. we are getting some chickens soon and i wondered if it is accepted practice to eat the eggs of your chickens. i will regardless, in my opinion they are going to lay them anyway. i would like to hear opinions on why i shouldn't. i can really see no harm that will come to them. we will love them and treat them as well as our other pets. the thought of putting animal flesh in my mouth is starting to make me physically ill. on a lighter side, i am dreading the thought that my favorite food, chinese, will never taste the same. trust me, when i go there the last thing on my plate is the veggies. another issue is my husband and my daughter at this point have no interest in doing this, they say the support me, but i will still be cooking meat. my goal is to slowly introduce veggie meals and fake meats. maybe they will come around. i just finished baking my first tofu meal, not sure about the texture, kinda reminds me of scrambled eggs, lol. | Becoming a vegetarian.... Ethical help. Hi, I unsuccessfully tried to become a vegetarian as a child. I have always been conscious and have been una le to eat any meat where there's is a bone in site. For the last two years I have worked in a developing country and during that time I have once again questioned eating meat. I have had some unfortunate experiences here with Animal welfare and I think in the UK it's a case of out of site out of mind. So far I have given up Pork (6 months) Lamb (6 months) and Beef (1 month). I only meat I now eat is Chicken. It occurred to me recently that I was still purchasing Leather shoes etc...How can I continue this? What is the general opinion on this? I am now trying to find alternatives... Any help would be much appreciated. Regards, James Post Date: 12/18/16, Replies: 4 | ||
| Becoming mostly vegetarian? I've recently decided to become vegetarian for health reasons (just in general not because of anything specific). I've watched a lot of Vegan youtube videos and have learned a lot of interesting things. I don't agree with all of them, but in general there are a lot of good information expressed. I don't think I will become completely vegan, but it does interest me. I currently still think I will eat seafood, local honey, and humanly raised eggs. Still unsure about how to handle special occasions....it's just new to me. Please bear with me as I am newly mostly vegetarian. I don't want to create or receive negativity. I have some general questions that I have not seen addressed on most of these sites. 1) What about farms that raise animals humanly? I see a lot of the horror situations discussed (which is disturbing), but what about giving kudos to farms that do it the right way? Even if someone doesn't want to eat the animal, there are plenty of farms that raise their animals humanly. My parents have 12 chickens which free roam and eat scraps. Which to me is as good as it gets. However, I don't live near them so I can only get their eggs when I am home. 2) Hunting and eating wild animals? I'm certain this is frowned upon strongly in general by this community. I do not hunt myself, but I think of wild animals as being more natural for eating. For instance, I have a hobby of fly fishing. Most of the time I put the fish back, but sometimes I eat them. I've always had the understanding of not wasting. If I was to keep a fish I would eat it. I'm probably going to stop keeping fish and in general eating even wild animals, but I don't have the same negativity toward hunting. 3) Kind of a follow-up to the first question. Do many Vegans work toward getting companies and farms to improve their treatment of animals? Rather than completely trying to get people to stop eating meat, it seems to me it would be better to improve the way farming is done. I'm sure there are people out there doing this. It's just that I see a lot of energy spent ripping on other vegans and not a lot of energy focused on improving how farming is done. I'm guessing the Vegan youtube community in general doesn't represent the majority of Vegans (like any other group of people). I suppose in general I shouldn't worry if I am completely Vegan or not. I should just eat what I think is OK and try to become healthier. But I do think it's been good to realize a lot of mass produced farming is not done properly. I've always preferred food that is wild (animal or plant). Learning about what products are humane and those that are not is good information either way. I have two young kids who are pretty picky eaters. My wife is willing to eat vegetarian meals though I don't think she wants to be completely vegetarian. That is despite the fact that she doesn't eat veal for animal humane reasons. I'll admit it will be somewhat difficult for me as well to be completely vegetarian. That being said, I think even if I am 90% that's probably a pretty good thing. And supporting farms who are doing things much more humanly should be a positive thing in my book. Thanks. | Becoming Vegan Ever since I became vegan,I've been burning up Google with finding vegan/organic products. To be honest,i never thought I'd ever become a vegan because I loved meat so much. I'm a lot happier and compassionate now that I'm vegan. Post Date: 08/16/14, Replies: 3 | ||

| Being "GREEN" No not Kermit the Frog... This "GREEN" thing that companies and corporate moguls are touting is not entirely fact. Being "GREEN," as it should be, encompasses everything about the environment including animals. One company, I will not name, that is big on being "GREEN," so they say, had a BBQ and cooked animal in many forms; plus their waste was was not indicative to being "GREEN." Does anyone buy into this corporate "GREEN" that they are trying to sell us? I mean, I think it is great that it is becoming a trend, but it only became acceptable in the business world when it related to them making money or saving it, not because it was the RIGHT thing to do. | Being a Vegetarian in a SOCIAL GATHERING Hi everyone! I am trying to convert from being a semi-vegetarian to a 100% vegetarian, and I need your help! One of my worries is that when I eat in social gatherings, I don't want to make others feel uncomfortable and uneasy with me, being picky about foods. Or when a friend hands me a pack of sweets, I don't know how to reject them politely. How can I tell others that I am a vegetarian in a way that would be fun and easy? | Being Veg In A Small Town I am in the process of job hunting, and it's frustrating that unless I find a job in a large town, living a veg life can turn into a real hassle. Most small towns not only have no health food stores, but their chain groceries carry very little in the way of vegetarian and organic items. Trying to find tofu, seitan, or tempeh is a real challenge. (And yes, I know you can make your own seitan...let's not start that discussion!) Organic produce (I prefer mine without chemicals, thank you) can sometimes be found seasonally at a farmer's market, but that's about it. Has anyone else experienced living veg in a small town? How did you cope? Post Date: 10/24/10, Replies: 5 | ||
| Being Vegetarian and Job Hunting Has anyone ever been put in a situation where they have to go to dinner as part of the job hunting process? | Belgian city plans 'veggie' days This seems to have been on a number of different media http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8046970.stm By Chris Mason BBC News, Ghent A poster advertising "Veggie Day" shows a sailor rowing an aubergine The Belgian city of Ghent is about to become the first in the world to go vegetarian at least once a week. Starting this week there will be a regular weekly meatless day, in which civil servants and elected councillors will opt for vegetarian meals. Ghent means to recognise the impact of livestock on the environment. The UN says livestock is responsible for nearly one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, hence Ghent's declaration of a weekly "veggie day". Public officials and politicians will be the first to give up meat for a day. It is hoped the move will cut Ghent's environmental footprint and help tackle obesity. Around 90,000 so-called "veggie street maps" are now being printed to help people find the city's vegetarian eateries. Post Date: 05/14/09, Replies: 0 | ||
| Best Cities for Vegan Entrepreneurs? Hey guys! My best friend and I are looking to start our own business - a vegan cafe and wellness center - in the next 5-10 years. She is a culinary students and I a nutrition student. We want to bring veganism, both raw and cooked, to the world but in a way that welcomes omnivores and raw foodists alike. After all, good food is something all people can bond over, right?! Anyway, here's the issue: location. We grew up together in the Twin Cities. I am still here for school, whereas my partner in crime is currently living on the west coast. She says I should eventually move out there because it is so much more veg-friendly, especially around cities like Seattle and Portland. What have y'all heard? Where would be the best place to start this kind of business? Any links or advice would be much appreciated. Take care! Post Date: 05/08/11, Replies: 4 | ||

| Big Restaurants I'm just curious if others are as frustrated as I am. Do you eat out often? I do because I travel and have to eat with people for work sometimes, and then my family likes to eat out too, but what I'm wondering is - do you feel like you can't really trust them when they say something is "vegetarian"? I mean, I just don't think most places know what really goes into some of the stuff, right? I was in a Mexican restaurant and they had a "vegetarian" burrito, so I asked if there was chicken base in the rice included inside the burrito, and yes!! It just makes me leary to eat anywhere not recommended here on my favorite website Happy cow! What do you'all think? Post Date: 01/31/10, Replies: 2 | ||
| Bigfoot Vegan? I'd like to think that Bigfoot wouldn't have been killing things to sustain his 7'7 frame. I'd think its safe to say he wasn't going around nursing on other animals for nourishment. So with that as a baseline, if he were veg he'd be vegan. So I think, though I don't know much about him or his legend, that he/they would more or less feast on vegetation. If Bigfoot ate animals, he'd they'd have left more of a trace, and from what I gather, he/they were fairly elusive. Also, its how I always thought of myself as primordial, my inclination/instinct would direct me toward plant kingdom rather than the animal kingdom if I were in this world ignorant of the PR machines that dictate the conventional American diet. | Bill Clinton following a near-vegan diet Just saw this video of Bill Clinton discussing his switch to an (almost) entirely plant-based diet. Sure it's not perfect, but I think it's great to see someone so influential discussing the benefits of a veggie diet. | Birthday in Melbourne! Needing advices :) I have to be in Melbourne on my birthday and because it's only one night I don't want to risk it going to a bad place. I am vegan and I refused to eat a tasteless salad on my day, I would love a nice meal and a tasty piece of vegan cake :D (and a glass of course) . The best would be a place with good atmosphere, maybe some music or at least friendly staff to have a nice evening with my colleagues. Thank you so much in advance ! | blogging about HappyCow! A friend in Tanzania just sent this blog post to me. http://laurajayne.me/2011/02/10/happy-cow-happy-laura/ + It's hard to find dedicated vegetarian restaurants in Utah – in large part because they don't exist – however, when I was looking for vegetarian restaurants in Georgia and Washington, the website Happy Cow is awesome! They have a directory of restaurants according to region and has other amazing vegetarian resources. Even if you aren't a vegetarian, Happy Cow has restaurant reviews and includes restaurants that are vegetarian-friendly or offer vegetarian choices with a review! Good vegetarian food is usually just good food in general, because there is so much focus on fresh ingredients and flavors – so it's worth checking out to find some quality and sometimes hidden culinary gems! + Thank you Laura Jayne! . . . | Blogilates Illegal Actions Against Vegans Well in case you didn't know recently a fitness youtuber blogilates has been getting alot of vegan youtube videos taken down. She has been doing this by filing illegal false copyright claims. Specifically she is targeting those who have made videos criticizing her. I was kind of surprised by this because the last couple of food videos she made were vegan recipes. But it's clear after this that she only made those video to capitalize on the "vegan trend". She only cares about money. I doubt she hates vegans or veganism. But she obviously cares about money more than ethics or animals if she is willing to break the law to try and silence voices within veganism. Her workout videos are crap anyway and her diet advice is terrible. More information in the video if you want to know some details. tinyurl.com/blogilatesveganism Post Date: 01/13/17, Replies: 4 | ||
