| Different reasons/triggers for "going veg" Margaret Mead quote - "It is easier to change a man's religion than to change his diet." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Joe Strummer of "The Clash" / thinking back to the Glastonbury Fayre Festival of 1971 - http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2004/jun/18/popandrock.glastonbury2004 + He returns to the footage of Glastonbury Fair on the screen. Now, the stage has been given over to a vegetarian activist, whose notion of cruelty to animals clearly does not preclude waving a terrified-looking chicken around in front of thousands of cheering hippies. Temple laughs. "Joe Strummer was at the first one as well," he says, "and he became a vegetarian as a result of this. He was converted by this guy with the chicken. You can laugh at it now, but somewhere in that crowd, Joe Strummer is having his life changed forever by Glastonbury." + Joe Strummer / Glastonbury / Arthur Brown Joe Strummer - remembering his "Arthur Brown / Chicken" moment - www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJTLIOdfysA Arthur Brown - Glastonbury - 1971 -http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=18399 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mick Jones of "The Clash" - http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/23/fashion/23nite.html?_r=2&ref=fashion&oref=slogin&oref=slogin + Mr. Jones explained that he doesn't consume meat or dairy. "I read about how animals experience fear on the way to slaughter," he said. "I didn't want to eat that. I figured it would make me a stronger person." + ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Terry Chimes of "The Clash" - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/6060180.stm + Terry Chimes, drummer with the Clash, literally turned his back on rock and roll - and became a chiropractor in Essex. His stage appearances are now limited to motivational seminars for doctors. A painting by the Clash's Paul Simonon is in Chimes' kitchen So how did he get from playing in a band to the treatment table? "I felt it was time to completely change - and over the time I'd been a musician, I'd already become a non-drinking, non-smoking, non-drug-taking vegetarian who does yoga." And that's not mentioning the triathlons. "People say how can you prefer treating patients to being on stage in front of 100,000 people? But if you can get someone healthy, there's a satisfaction in that which is much more profound." Instead of being an ex-rocker "always looking at their scrapbooks", the 51-year-old, who also played with Black Sabbath, is writing a book about well-being and health. + Post Date: 03/29/09, Replies: 9 | ||
| survey! Hello, I was wondering if you would like to help me out. For my college class, I have to survey 150 vegetarians and so far I have around 30. If you could fill it out, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Are you a vegetarian? Are you a vegan? Male/Female? Ethnic Origin? Age? Where did you grow up? What is your highest level of education? How long have you been a vegetarian? A vegan? If you are in a relationship, is your partner a vegetarian as well? Why did you decide to become a vegetarian? | From Vegetarianism to Veganism Hey everyone! I've been a Vegetarian for a good 11 years now. Recently I've wondered why I've never gone Vegan. I went over the list on what contains anything to do with animals, and WoW. I can't believe the amount of stuff that contains remnants. So my question is, How does anyone really be a Vegan when there are just so many things to watch out for? Thanks for anyones help! Post Date: 02/01/13, Replies: 9 | ||
| Eating Vegan in Walt Disney World Heading to Florida for the Disney Marathon, any advice or recommendations as far as eating? I'm not really the type to survive on salads alone so I was hoping someone may have some experience with his. I'll be with 4 omni friends so I don't want to make all of our dining decisions based on me. Thanks. Post Date: 03/16/14, Replies: 9 | ||
| Vegans- do you use vegan skin care? Just curious about the type of cosmetics or skin care products you use. Are they vegan or no? I didn't even think about the products I put on my skin until just recently and I was shocked when I found out what is actually in make up and beauty products! Post Date: 06/20/13, Replies: 9 | ||
| What should I feed my pets? I have been a vegetarian for 17 years and recently decided to become vegan. I have always had this question, what do you guys feed your pets? I have always fed my dog and cats regular dog and cat food, is there any other alternatives? Post Date: 05/18/13, Replies: 9 | ||
| Need a butter substitute Hi all! First off, I am not a Vegan, nor am I a vegetarian. However, I am the only cook in the house, and I like to try to accommodate everyone. So, when my Vegan daughter returns home from school, I have to rearrange the recipes a bit to suit her needs. Anyway...when I make a big panful of stir-fried vegetables (which I love), I usually finish it off by adding a tablespoon or two of butter, which I season with basil and possibly some Herb de Province. Does anyone know of a GOOD butter substitute that I could use in this mix that would immitate the taste and texture of butter? I'd even appreciate the brand name, if you have it. Thanks for your help! Post Date: 01/15/14, Replies: 9 | ||
| new here & new to veganism. :) Hello!! Thought I would introduce myself. My name is Jessica and I have recently (February 4 to be exact) decided to eat a vegan diet. I watched multiple documentaries, but "Earthlings" is what really did it for me. I always knew that animal products came from animals, but NEVER did I ever imagine the blatant disrespect, cruelty and control issues involved. It is shocking, disgusting and inhumane. I can't even believe what I saw. I always pictured this happy little farm with happy chickens laying eggs and cows making milk and eating grass in the open etc. I knew cows were killed for their meat... but I guess I thought it was a process that was done ethically and respectfully. I am ashamed to admit I was one of those "ignorance is bliss" types.... but it isn't bliss for the animals. And I am glad that I have stumbled across the few documentaries I have found to open my eyes. People SHOULD see this sad truth because I wouldn't be surprised if there are others who have that cute farm image in their head either. Anyways. That was my mini rant/introduction. Please bear with me as I have already been struggling. Not so much with meat, but cheese. Ugh. That has always been a staple to my diet. My husband and I went to Sprouts (he has also started the "vegan journey" with me) and we got imitation cheese slices.... eh... not doing it for me. They are all spongey and weird!! But I am doing my best to overcome this. I am really just not wanting to fail. It is not worth it. Anyway, that is me. Glad to meet you all and be a part of this community. Hate to post and run but it is almost midnight and I am tired!! :) Post Date: 04/08/14, Replies: 9 | ||
| Chefs reluctant to make veganise Is it because I live in a small South Pacific country that this is a problem? I look at the menu if I can before dining out and find a few options between the regular menu and sides. Then off I go. Well, tonight I had another average experience. I ordered the roast vege salad and asked for the feta and aioli to be left off, and could I have them replaced with kidney beans that were already on the menu with the nachos. The chef asked if I had extreme dairy allergies, which I said no, I was vegan. He said he could take the feta and aioli off, but not replace them with beans or anything else. My salad was nice, although dry because they didn't put ANY dressing on it!!! Even though the green salad I ordered for my starter had vinaigrette. I didn't think a replacement was that difficult, and I was still charged the full price. I was dining with a group, so didn't want to make a big deal. What's other peoples experiences been like regarding replacements? It wasn't cheap and cheerful either! Post Date: 08/02/14, Replies: 9 | ||

| Coffee Machine Help Hey I'm from the UK and newly Vegan so... new to all this stuff. Making a coffee with instant stuff from jars with soy milk isn't really cutting it for me meaning I tend to walk to my local coffee shop chain for a decent soy latte. However I'd like to save some money and make them at home so obviously... I need a coffee machine. Now all the people I know who own them have the type of machine that requires pods/capsules that already have milk powder in. What kind of coffee machine do I need to be buying where I can obviously use my own soy milk? Or are there even soy milk pods available? Thanks guys. Post Date: 03/22/17, Replies: 9 | ||
| Around other people I am not a vegan, not even a vegetarian. But I am interested to adopt to a vegan lifestyle. However, I still live with my parents, and we share our food. When I get my own place then I will make the transition. I do not know if I can exactly call myself a "vegan wannabe", because there are some things I disagree with vegans on. For example, I happen to think if somebody gifts you food, or gifts you leather clothing, then you can use it. Because you are not supporting cruelty, the dirty work has already been done. I know vegans do not think like that, but I do, so I am not sure if that makes me a "vegan". However, I do agree that people should not be using animals, and on top of it, we do not need them. (But that would be an off-topic discussion for my question.) My problem is that I do not want to tell other people that I am a vegan (or close to being one), then deal with it. Considering I am currently living with other people, and we all share our meals, what do you suggest? I am genuinly interested in changing my lifestyle around. But I want to do that when I get to be on my own. Post Date: 02/06/16, Replies: 9 | ||

| coca-cola warning A few weeks ago i found out that despite what the coca-cola company says and writes many of their products and the products of companies they own they are not vegan or vegetarian friendly outside of the USA. Their soda contains a fish product designed to stabilize the soda, yeilding the 'foam head' we are so familiar with. Even more frustrating is coca-cola's attitude which is that of 'its only a little bit, it wont do them any harm.' this is an attitude which undermines the morals and principles which most vegans and vegetarians stand for. The coca-cola company has a history of dishonesty. This includes coca-colas alleged 'secret ingredient which was the cochineal beetle dye. This is commonly known as carmine and is made from the husks of dead cochineal beetles. Carmine is still used as a red dye in many food products. After their secret was out they reformed their recipe and have excluded addition of the beetle, however the fish remains. These are just some of the things to watch out for. many additives and food contents come from animals though they are not apparent from the names given to them. extensive lists of the products with their names and descriptions are available online and lists of non-vegan/vegetarian suitable products owned by the coca-cola company can be found on their website under FAQ. | becoming a vegetarian hi, i have been doing some soul searching recently about this issue. i have decided that veg*ism is the right road for me. it will probably take some time for me to completly transform, so i will take it one step at a time. we are getting some chickens soon and i wondered if it is accepted practice to eat the eggs of your chickens. i will regardless, in my opinion they are going to lay them anyway. i would like to hear opinions on why i shouldn't. i can really see no harm that will come to them. we will love them and treat them as well as our other pets. the thought of putting animal flesh in my mouth is starting to make me physically ill. on a lighter side, i am dreading the thought that my favorite food, chinese, will never taste the same. trust me, when i go there the last thing on my plate is the veggies. another issue is my husband and my daughter at this point have no interest in doing this, they say the support me, but i will still be cooking meat. my goal is to slowly introduce veggie meals and fake meats. maybe they will come around. i just finished baking my first tofu meal, not sure about the texture, kinda reminds me of scrambled eggs, lol. | MSN soy bashing, please write them The MSN news site has a misleading headline this week concerning an alzheimers study and trying to connect tofu with this illness. They have left out the most important fact, which is that the tofu consumed in the Indonesian study was treated with formaldehyde, and this may very well be the reason for the resulting dementia. They also neglected to mention whether or how much meat, fish and other harmful foods were being consumed by the study participants. This is another blatant example of misleading and misinformed soy-bashing, which will do nothing but scare people away from soy products and back toward animal products, which are a direct cause of heart disease, heart attack, stroke and cancer in the human body. Please write to MSN and express your concern with their seemingly biased, half-truth reporting. The link for comments is... | A Fresh Irradiated Salad - “radura” flavor So after covering it in tortured animal sh*t / waste they want to irradiate it! Ref - http://www.happycow.net/blog/?p=188 New - "glow in the dark" iceberg lettuce and fresh spinach. Quote - "The FDA insists the practice is safe, and the agency says that when irradiated under the conditions specified in the final rule, the greens retain their nutrient value." My addition - ".....and the sh*t will retain its flavor". Nice decision for Americans by the FDA! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The article - +A Fresh Irradiated Salad+ +The FDA Approved Irradiation of Lettuce and Fresh Spinach. Is That the Best Way to Prevent Foodborne Illness?+ By Annie Bell Muzaurieta We've seen our fair share of outbreaks of foodborne illness over the past few years. In an effort to address this problem, the FDA announced last week a final rule that allowed the use of ionizing radiation on iceberg lettuce and fresh spinach to control foodborne pathogens such as E. coli, and to make the products last longer on the grocery store shelf. Currently, some hamburger meat, poultry and spices are irradiated to kill bacteria, but until now US producers were not allowed to irradiate fruits and vegetables for food safety. Fresh iceberg lettuce and fresh spinach that has been irradiated will have to be labeled with a “radura” logo along with either the statement “Treated with radiation” or “Treated by irradiation.” The FDA insists the practice is safe, and the agency says that when irradiated under the conditions specified in the final rule, the greens retain their nutrient value. But does this really address the source of the problem? Stephen Hedges in the Chicago Tribune writes that this is the latest example of the FDA using a technical fix to treat a biological problem. He suggests that each of these decisions--approving irradiation on meat, approving the application of carbon monoxide gas to keep meat red, approving the sale of meat and dairy products from cloned cows--"has broadened the philosophical divide between food manufacturers, which generally favor the expanded use of such technology, and many food safety and organic food groups that oppose it." Bill Freese, a science policy analyst with the Center for Food Safety in Washington, is quoted in the article: "Food irradiation is a pseudo-fix. It's a way to try to come in and clean up problems that are created in the middle of the food production chain. I think it's clearly a disincentive to clean up the problems at the source." | Vegetarian/vegan- and PREGNANT?!?!? So, here goes it: How does one maintain good health- all things considered with a little life inside?? Any good books we should know about?? I've read of a couple who didn't feed their child milk and only soy milk.... and let's just say it didn't end well. I am v-curious. :) I have been on and of vegetarian and now am pregnant. | Vegetarian wishing to become vegan Hi, I'm new to this website. I've been vegetarian for 3 years now, and am seriously becoming vegan. At the moment I am trying to avoid all animal products, but am finding this quite difficult as there are hundreds of products which you wouldn't even suspect to be not suitable for vegetarian's (discovered yesterday, as I read the ingredients to salt and vinegar flavoured snack a jacks and discovered that they contain lactose made from animal rennet)! My problem is that I am recovering from an Eating Disorder, and so need to maintain a good calorie intake so that I do not lose more weight, as I am classed as underweight already. I need as much help and advice as possible in finding vegan products from supermarkets such as Asda etcetra, as I do not want my parents to see my hope-of-becoming-vegan as a means of cutting things out of my diet. I am hoping to become vegan as I do not support the use of animals in the food industry, and feel more comfortable in consuming products not derived from animals. Any help is welcome. Thanks! | Vegetarian Food Places Hey all! I dont have time to make myself vegetarian lunches so I'm forced to eat vegetarian food from restaurants and fast food places. I'm sure you all know this but there aren't a lot of choices, I find myself eating the same things over and over. I eat a lot of french fries, bean burritos from taco bell or del taco, sometimes grilled cheeses from in-n-out, and I get veggie sandwiches from subway a lot too... So I was wondering what other vegetarians do? Do you prepare your own lunch? Do you eat the same thing every day? Post Date: 11/16/10, Replies: 8 | ||
| eating veggies grown without animal poop hi guys! i am a budding vegan gardener. i know there are a few key components to organic vegan gardening, and i am trying to hone my skills in these areas (ie crop rotation, green manures, home composting, etc). since most 'organic' food is grown with animal manure, i feel strongly about learning natural, alternative ways for growing. is anyone else into vegan gardening or even aware that vegetables are only as 'vegan' as they are grown? by the way, i am blogging about my garden endeavors (and other vegan related things) at veganscene.blogspot.com Post Date: 08/12/10, Replies: 8 | ||
| Difficulties faced by Veg*ns? Hi, I am trying to start a website about veganism, which will, among other things, address the difficulties faced by vegans & vegetarians, both in becoming meat-free, and staying that way. I know personally faced certain difficulties, but I cannot base it on my experience alone, because peoples' situations are different than mine - socially, geographically, economically, etc. So I am asking for your input, and would be very grateful for any shared experience: What were the most difficult obstacles, for you, in BECOMING a veg*an, and what is the the most difficult part of STAYING vegan? Thank you in advance for your thoughts and time. I really appreciate it! Andrey Post Date: 04/12/12, Replies: 8 | ||
