Posted by cookies and cream at 07/22/10 09:48:14i only had to read the first three lines to realize that really, they are the people who have a mental disease!
eating junk food suffocates you so you would have diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease and other life-threatining problems.
Posted by ValaNirvana at 09/21/10 14:41:04I don't think eating healthy is a mental disorder. Unfortunately, we live in a society where most people are out of the habit of thinking about what goes into their food and where it comes from. But there is a difference between a healthy concern and activism about one's food and total obsession. I say this because often, people with legitimate eating disorders will adopt vegetarian or vegan diets in order to justify not eating. But labeling everyone who eats healthy as disordered is unfair to the people who are concerned with their health (but not obsessed with loosing weight).
Posted by AndyT at 09/22/10 04:12:39I have asked the originator of the classification whether he would comprise veganism under the term 'orthorexia' and have received an answer:
> If you're a vegan for moral reasons, there is no way in the world that's orthorexia! Even without the moral motivation, I don't think I've ever met an orthorexic whose sole dietary restriction was veganism/vegetarianism. I have met a few vegetarians who weren't careful to eat a balanced diet ("french fry vegetarians," mostly) and a great many more vegans with the same problem (mostly due to ideological issues about B12 and the like), but in none of these cases would I even think of applying the term "orthorexia.'
I do not doubt that there are people who suffer from the disorder. Where's the border? One persons 'neatness' can be another persons 'OCD' (Obsessive-compulsive disorder). And yes, there have been cases where people stopped to eat because of the (irrational) fear that most food is not healthy enough. (But I am sure there are millions more cases where people have gorged themselves to death on junk food - which at some point you also have to call a disorder)
