Vegan / Vegetarian Discussion - All Things Veg*n Forum

I was vegan for a year and was forced to stop since I lost weight. (Very depressed and anxious over that time frame because of isolation) and so yeah they said either I go eat meat or get sent to a hospital
They called me anorexic and stuff and angered me because I'm clearly not, I can down a box of Oreos but morally do not want to consume meat or dairy. I've talked to them about it and it's a no go. They refuse and won't give me a chance. I am pretty educated on it but in that time period I had no appetite and YEAh. I feel like I lost my purpose and I care so deeply about animals. They won't buy me beans and stuff, I was lucky enough to get oats and my dad gets so mad even when I eat something like ricE!!! It's so Aggrivating and honestly I feel so lost, I hate I'm contributing to this. The only thing I can really do is not eat it, and try to find something later without them knowing because of their ways. I'm so passionate about this but they don't care and made up their minDs. Any advice? Talking to them isn't an option? And I'm only 14 so I can't get a job just yet :(

I would suggest going to your local library and getting a copy of a vegan nutrition book. Some good ones are:

Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet by Brenda Davis, RD

A Guide to Vegan Nutrition by George Eisman, RD

Vegan for Her: The Woman’s Guide to Being Healthy and Fit on a Plant-Based Diet by Virginia Messina

If you can't find any of these, print off this vegan nutrition food chart:
    www.vegancoach.com/vegan-food-pyramid.html

Really get yourself familiar with vegan nutrition and simple ways to meet your needs, then share this information with your family. If they won't listen to you, write a letter and tape it to one of the books or attach it to the front of the nutrition pages you print from the last link. SHOW them that you can thrive as a vegan, and list specific steps you will take to do that. For example, for breakfast I will eat oatmeal with peanut butter and berries.

If you got too thin your parents have a right to express their concern, and if they do not understand about veganism and what the diet entails, of course they are going to express doubts. By educating them and showing by example that you can be healthy and strong, you have a better chance at convincing them to let you try it.

Though I went vegan as an adult, I had a long history of severe anorexia nervosa so my family was also very suspicious and unsupportive at first. I actually got to a normal weight for the first time in many years WHILE I WAS VEGAN. I have made a huge effort to take care of my body and I think that made a world of difference. My Mom and sister are now vegetarian and working towards vegan. My family no longer dismisses my veganism and instead are very supportive, as is my partner. I have been vegan six years as of February 2017.

If you lose your appetite and become depressed, you need to see a doctor or counselor and work it out. There is no need to suffer alone. Join a vegan group for support if your depression is due to the injustices you see in the world. This is not an uncommon response, but you can not let it damage your health and well being. This will not help the animals.

Best wishes! Just do the best you can and realize you won't live with them forever!
