Hawaii "Luau" or show I'm headed to Honolulu and Maui in December and since it's my kids first time I'd love for them to see a typical hawaiian dance and flame show, but for (hopefully) obvious reasons don't want to go to a typical Luau. Does anyone know of any good shows we could go to on Oahu or Maui? Thanks :) Post Date: 03/25/13, Replies: 1

Hong Kong Hi, travelling to Hong Kong this weekend. Anyone with good Vegetarian restaurant suggestions? Thanks Post Date: 04/25/14, Replies: 1
HongKongBliss - vegan dim-sum rediscovered Guys - today I took some time out from my work & went "walkabout" in Hong Kong Island for a few hours. Hong Kong is a very easy & convenient place to stay / thrive as a vegan. Every few blocks you see a well stocked fresh fruit stall. Every area has at least 1 Chinese vegetarian restaurant / cafe with the vast majority of dishes being vegan. In a few places we have 100% vegan restaurants either with gorgeous Buddhist altars at their centre / a few are located in the grounds of temples surrounded by flowering trees. Today's big bonus for me was walking through Hong Kong Park in the Admiralty District of Hong KOng Island & discovering that my favorite Chinese tea shop which serves only vegan dim-sum had reopened after having been closed for too many weeks. Their menu changes daily. I will submit the details to Eric tonight. It should be listed on the Hong Kong page within a few days. Search, visit & enjoy! Did you know that in hell unfortunate souls are able to drink unlimited amounts of fine teas - but they are forced to eat dim-sum made with cooked pieces of the bodies of tortured animals between sips! Hoping to visit British Columbia soon! Hello BC friends! There is a strong chance that I'll be up your way for a visit at least once between now and the end of May. I'd love to get your advise on things to see and do, where to get the best vegan eats inexpensively and best of all: to meet some of you cool veg folks! Here's a bit about me and my interests: I live in Portland, Oregon. I've had a vegan diet for 15+ years now. I'm a Daddy to 3 wonderful young vegans. They probably wont be with me on the trip but if you ever visit me down here you will likely meet them. Stuff I'm fond of: helping others and helping others help themselves - learning and sharing what I've learned - wild lands: forests, hills, mountains - hot springs - islands - books, bookstores and libraries - trains, trams and ferries - riding bicycles - diy/free living and travel - camping, hiking and generally just being in nature - wild edible plants - emergency and natural medicine - meeting people - developing deep and lasting friendships - sharing tasty and nutritious vegan food - social justice - personal freedom - ecological sustainability and simple living - recreational and competitive shooting - defense training of many types - learning other languages besides english - flea markets, yard sales, swap meets, trade circles and so much more... Get in touch! Post Date: 04/03/09, Replies: 3
Hospitality Education Has anyone had this experience? It was the first time for me. I was reading the menu outside a very popular beachfront restaurant, and a maitre'd came up to me and asked if I'd like any help. I explained that I was looking to see if there was any vegan or vegetarian options, and she said with a big smile - "Yes!" and then told me they had a gluten free menu. Every dish on the menu had animal products, so I said that vegan meant nothing dead from an animal or related to an animal's body - no meat, dairy, eggs - so she repeated that they had a gluten free menu, and I repeated myself about being vegan! Needless to say we didn't dine there. I had hoped that the difference between gluten free and vegan/vegetarian would be more commonplace in a high tourist area. Post Date: 08/18/14, Replies: 0

Humane Animal Rescues/Sanctuaries in USA Is anyone aware of a website that lists humane animal rescues/sanctuaries in the USA (eg. Popcorn Park and Sanctuary in NJ)? I'm driving from the east coast to the west coast this summer and I would like to stop at any that are along my route to support them, but I'm having a hard time finding them. If not, could you list any humane rescues/sanctuaries that you are aware of? Thanks! Post Date: 05/10/16, Replies: 2

In Mumbai & Looking for Greens to Eat Here on business going on two weeks now and although I do enjoy the variety of vegetarian foods here, it's been curry for breakfast, lunch and supper. From someone who is used to eating salads virtually every day (green smoothies for breakfast too) they aren't found on any menus here (at least at the hotel where I'm staying). Can anyone here recommend a place in Mumbai that is "safe" for my American digestive tract? Post Date: 05/14/13, Replies: 0

Is Gelato vegetarian in Italy (Florence)? My wife and I are travelling to Florence next week, and we were wondering whether gelato, as sold at local gelaterias (sp?) who make it fresh every day, is vegetarian. I.e., do they ever use any animal products such as gelatin, like in many commercial ice-creams? More specifically, would someone be able to recommend any wholly-vegetarian gelaterias in Florence? "Perche No" often comes up in the listings, but I couldn't see whether their normal non-vegan flavours are actually totally vegetarian. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks! Israel Black Hebrews vegan restaurant plan My friends in Israel - from Wikipedia - The African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem - "The group maintains a vegan diet, inspired by the commandment in the book of Genesis chapter 1 verse 29. They practice abstinence from alcohol, other than wine that they make themselves, and both illegal and pharmaceutical drugs, so as to stay within the cycles of life. The group also owns and operates a chain of vegetarian restaurants throughout the country. Adult members exercise three times a week, and are advised to have at least one full-body massage each month for its health benefits." From Reuters yesterday = African Hebrews sink roots deeper into Holy Land Wed Nov 7, 2007 7:04am EST By Avida Landau DIMONA, Israel, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Four decades after they heard what they call an angel's order to leave the United States and move to Israel, a vegan community popularly known as "the Black Hebrews" is about to get its own piece of the Holy Land. Identifying themselves as African Hebrew Israelites, about 300 African-Americans arrived in 1969 in the sleepy desert town of Dimona, claiming to be descendants of the ancient Israelites and a right to settle in the Jewish state. Despite observing Jewish holidays and practices, they were never recognised as Jews by Israeli authorities, but were allowed to remain. Their legal status has been resolved, and the government granted them permanent Israeli residency. But fire services warned their homes in the small government-owned compound -- which they call the "Village of Peace" -- may be a fire hazard. So Dimona Mayor Meir Cohen and the government decided to give the community of about 3,000 Hebrews their own tract of land in the town. On their new property, they hope not only to construct more comfortable dwellings, but also to build tourist attractions such as a wellness resort, health treatment clinics and restaurants, all reflecting the community's lifestyle. "We are really excited. It gives us a chance to further expand on the things we have begun to do in this country and I think also to share those benefits on a more stable foundation with the wider community," said Prince Immanuel Ben-Yehuda, a white cloth-dressed spiritual leader of the community. HOLISTIC Members of the community, where English is the spoken language and the children wear colourful African-style robes and white headcovers, believe a completely vegan diet of locally grown fruits and vegetables, along with regular exercise and holistic health treatments, are keys to longevity and health. A medical study conducted in Dimona by U.S. university researchers in 1998 found the community was largely free of illnesses typical to African-Americans such as hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol. "We expect to have something of a resort area where visitors will come, experience the lifestyle of the community, and as a point of rest and relaxation -- an island of tranquillity -- here in Israel," Ben-Yehuda said. The community members have also made an effort to integrate into Israeli society by following the Israeli education curriculum in their school, located just outside the compound. In addition, about 100 community members now serve in the Israeli armed forces. The community also produces and markets their traditional natural-fabric robes and produce their own brand of gospel-style music, which has been performed both locally and internationally. "We have really outgrown the area where we live in today," Ben-Yehuda said. (Reporting by Avida Landau; editing by Jeffrey Heller and Sara Ledwith) Post Date: 11/08/07, Replies: 0
Israelis Sway Domino's To Make Vegan Pizza In the U.S., Big Pizza is locked in a battle that's as much a testament to gluttony as it is to food science: How much cheese can you possibly stuff inside of wheat dough? Earlier this year, Pizza Hut took it to the next level with the Crazy Cheesy Crust Pizza: a regular pizza ringed with "pockets" oozing a five-cheese blend. By way of explanation of its existence, Pizza Hut's head chef told Yahoo, "Consumers always want more cheese." But in Israel, apparently, they don't. There, the cheese is being voted off the pizza, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported this week. It seems a passionate vegan lobby clamored so loudly for dairy-free pizza that Domino's had to acquiesce. The pizza chain's stores in Israel are now offering a family-size pizza with vegetables and a soy-based topping for about $20. It all started with a Facebook campaign led by Vegan Friendly, a group that promotes the vegan lifestyle in Israel. Vegan Friendly claims to have a virtual community of 30,000 vegans in Israel, and has stamped hundreds of stores and restaurants with its vegan-friendly seal. The vegans wanted pizza, and they weren't going to stop until they got it. Americans eat about 31 pounds of cheese per person each year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "Israel is leading the vegan revolution around the world, and this is another indication," Omri Paz, the director of Vegan Friendly, told Haaretz's Dafna Arad. He said that with the new pizza on the menu, vegans could order from the chain "without pangs of conscience." Domino's has 10,000 locations in more than 70 countries, including 50 branches in Israel. We were curious whether the Israeli vegan pizza might inspire something similar on stateside menus. Not so much. "We'll be paying attention to [the vegan pizza in Israel], but it's not something we're working on here in the U.S.," Domino's spokesman Tim McIntyre tells The Salt. In the meantime, Domino's will continue selling Wisconsin 6 Cheese Pizza and the Stuffed Cheesy Bread to cater to the cheeseheads. (Americans consumed about 34 pounds of cheese per person in 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which some argue is a bit too much.) Still, vegans or people who may simply want a lighter pizza may have more pizza options in the near future. The Wall Street Journal reports that Chipotle is getting into the choose-your-own-topping pizza business, with a new concept in Denver called Pizzeria Locale it helped finance. article link; http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/12/17/251998998/hold-the-cheese-israelis-sway-dominos-to-make-vegan-pizza Israel Vegan Friendly http://www.vegan-friendly.co.il/ Post Date: 08/09/14, Replies: 0
