| Your fave veg places in Middle America So, I understand the Midwest is not a hotbed of culture and or enlightenment. When reading through most of the reviews in the mid states, there aren't a lot of veggie places, and the ones that are seem to be breakfast joints. Any fine dining going out yonder? Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missou, Ohio, Indiana? Y'all got any Candle Cafe, Horizons, Sublimes out there? Anything creative? Read through a bunch of stuff, saw nothing special so far. I guess that too is almost a problem w the cows. You give 5 for being there out there, but 5 for true brilliance in cultural meccas. The same place elsewhere might get 2 or 3.... Thanks for the help y'all, fave places and great places not to miss on the way through. Post Date: 03/13/09, Replies: 26 | ||
| Portland A Vegan Oasis If you live somewhere with decent flights to Portland, its a worthwhile inexpensive vegan adventure. I highly suggest only going during their "dry" season and when its warm. The public transportation and the ability to ride your bike nearly everywhere is fantastic. There are vegan options on nearly every corner. The vegan friendly density must be one of the greatest in the world. Highlights -Food Fight all vegan grocery store -Bye & Bye & The Tube - Vegan friend BARS! -Vegan Food Carts (Sip) -Endless Vegan Breakfast Options -Chinese/Japense/Rose Garden -Green Loop Organic Clothing Store -Red and Black Cafe (vegan live music/open mics) This blog covers it all http://stumptownvegans.com/ I must say though, I've never felt more UNHEALTHY in my ENTIRE vegan life than after 4 days in the vegan candy store that is Portland! Its comfort food overkill! Its a really young and eclectic city. (A lot of people walk around barefoot?) Post Date: 05/03/09, Replies: 25 | ||
| The Lodge West Indies Paradise Vegan Lodge The Lodge on Grenada was one of the best vacations my husband and I have had in twenty year. Outstanding views, beautiful accomodations, and out of this world scruptious vegan dinners and breakfasts (and lunch on request) from Mary and Mark. Delightful hosts with dry British humor and a wonderful sense of the history and rich offerings of the region and their place. We brought a couple with us who are decidely NOT vegetarians and they loved it too. Highly recommended for the food, the people, the gorgeous home, and the island experience. | London Review's I just "added up" Happycow's listings for London, England. There are now 100+ restaurants / cafe's listed - a few are listed as stores but they have cafe's also. Now I can see all of my favorites! What a fabulous city London is! The London area is much easier to navigate now that it is broken up into 7 clearly defined area's. PLEASE guys remember to Review more places / update older Review's after you revisit & munch. There must be another 50+ great restaurants / markets / stores to add. | Food at Air plains ???? Hey guys , what is your experience with meals in air planes ? I haven't traveled since I became veg, but soon I am going oversees and I want to know did they serve only salads, or there exist something for veggies too ??? Post Date: 12/08/16, Replies: 11 | ||
| Volunteer Work in Third World Countries? sooo....I've been looking to do some traveling and volunteer work, but I haven't been vegan all that long, so the traveling thing is still looking a little scary. I'm rather uncertain about showing up in a country where I don't speak the language, and I don't know if I'll be able to find vegan foods readily. I'm likely looking to travel to a third world country, so this could mean that the foods I would normally find at health food stores might be scarce. I had found a tour group I had wanted to go with, but when I asked them about traveling as a vegan, I got a pretty awful, almost mocking response, and I don't know if I want to keep trying to travel with that company or not. Some questions: Does anyone know any veg-friendly international volunteer organizations? (I would really love to travel with a group of people, especially if they were all cool and veggie-like) Has anyone had any expereinces volunteering internationally while eating veg or vegan that they'd like to share? Any advice on this one about do's and don'ts? Can you bring food on planes anymore (like if I wanted to stash a bunch o' tofu and soymilk)? Even in your luggage??? Thanks a bunch, the Mendicant Crow Post Date: 03/19/11, Replies: 9 | ||
| Vegan and Vegetarian Festivals Does anyone know of a list of Veg Fests around the world? If not, can we start one here? If you could list the name of the festival, the location, the month it typically takes place in, and a website if you have it, we can create a master list. It would be fun to visit places and see different veg fests around the world. Post Date: 11/02/16, Replies: 9 | ||
| Vegan eating in Amsterdam and Cape Town Just wondering if anyone can recommend anywhere? Doesn't have to be 100% vegan, as long as there are some decent vegan options I'd be happy. I shall be in Amsterdam in June and (hopefully) Cape Town (South Africa) in late July. Post Date: 07/09/07, Replies: 8 | ||

| American vegan travel to London, thoughts? I'm going to London for two weeks, mid December to celebrate my 50th birthday, anyone have any ideas on good/great restaurants? Or anyone want to meet up for a dinner/lunch buddy? I'm a 21 year geek/vegan who looks/feels 40 and am hoping to experience history and the sites of London and possibly outer areas, what do you think? Post Date: 01/28/10, Replies: 8 | ||
| Concerns about running a Vegan B&B Inn Hello All! I'm new to this site. Until recently, I was a high school Culinary Arts teacher ... but our state economy in Arizona is such that budget cuts have terminated my program. This is the 2nd time that I've been laid off due to budget cuts in the past six years. It's a bit frustrating because teachers in Arizona rank towards the bottom of the nation in terms of teacher salaries. Most teachers never had a problem with this because the low pay used to be offset by some degree of job security. So long as you did your job and were a good teacher, you pretty much had a job for life. This is no longer true and good teachers by the hundreds have been steadily laid off for the past several years. Instead of moving yet again in the pursuit of yet another teaching job, I've given some thought to returning to Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania realty market is such that I still own a home there. It's been on the market since 2007. My home is (or was) a Victorian B&B Inn ... seven bedrooms with attached bathrooms ... eight if you count the innkeeper's suite. Instead of running this place as a typical B&B, I've been thinking about turning it into a vegan B&B that would pair vegan cooking workshops with overnight (or longer) stays. Since I wasn't raised as a vegan let alone a vegetarian, the single biggest problem I had when I adopted a vegan diet was the fact that I missed a lot of my favorite comfort foods. This led me to create vegan version recipes of popular comfort foods such as chicken fried steak, Sichuan Pork, spaghetti with meatballs and Italian sausage, and steamed fish with Cantonese Sauce. It also led me into writing and I am now producing a 10 volume vegan cookbook series called "The Unintentional Vegan, Vegan Version Recipes of Popular Comfort Foods." Volume 1: Beef, is currently available as an e-book through Amazon.com. So ... here is my concern. There are a lot more non-vegans out there than vegans ... so if I opened a vegan B&B inn that was primarily tied to vegan cooking workshops, I could alienate non-vegans. I don't want to exclude people from the inn for being non-vegan or non-vegetarian ... but I can also see that having a vegan inn could create all sorts of guest complaints from non-vegans about the quality of their breakfast i.e. why aren't you serving eggs? Where's the bacon? Why don't you have any milk? I really don't want to produce non-vegan foods. It would after all seem hypocritical to offer non-vegan foods in a supposedly vegan inn that also offered vegan cooking workshops. I don't think non-vegans would enjoy my vegan scrambled eggs (made with rice, bean curd, and soy cheese) but they might enjoy my pancakes and almond crusted french toast. I could also offer cereal and fresh fruit. I've even created a recipe for a faux yogurt made with soy milk, various flavorings, and agar-agar. With this being said, having previously run an inn for three years, I know that some guests can be fickle ... and I really don't want to have to explain over and over again the concept of veganism or why the inn is vegan friendly. As a business owner, I know that I'd have to state this up front ... but even so, I would anticipate receiving complaints and or foolish questions about why this vegan inn doesn't serve non-vegan foods. Even if I told guests upfront that this was a vegan inn and even if I posted this on the business website, I'm sure I'd still have people nattering on about this. I'd appreciate hearing any constructive thoughts regarding the operation of a vegan B&B inn. Good idea? Bad idea? What do I do to head off the complaints of non-vegan guests who want their bacon and eggs? Post Date: 09/09/13, Replies: 8 | ||

| Veg restaurant maps? Hi, I'm new to HappyCow, and I have a question for everyone. Does anyone know of printed city maps of San Francisco, NYC, Portland, etc. which show veggie restaurants? I've seen the VegOut books but I'm looking for more of a fold out map; their format isn't quite as detailed as I'd like. If there was one which also showed public transit too I'd be really happy. Thoughts? Thanks! Post Date: 11/29/09, Replies: 7 | ||

| No VGMLs on Qatar Airlines I recently flew Qatar Airlines round trip from the US to China. As always, I order a vgml meal before flying. The meals I was served were not vegan meals. On one segment of the flight I was served a sandwich with eggs. On another segment of the flight I was given cheese. I contacted their customer service at the end of my flight to complain. It took them more than 1 month to reply. Their reply "sorry." Hardly the kind of service that one would expect from a company that prides itself as being a "5-star airline." | Is Gelato vegetarian in Italy (Florence)? My wife and I are travelling to Florence next week, and we were wondering whether gelato, as sold at local gelaterias (sp?) who make it fresh every day, is vegetarian. I.e., do they ever use any animal products such as gelatin, like in many commercial ice-creams? More specifically, would someone be able to recommend any wholly-vegetarian gelaterias in Florence? "Perche No" often comes up in the listings, but I couldn't see whether their normal non-vegan flavours are actually totally vegetarian. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks! | Traveling to Mumbai, How to Eat Safely Hi All, Next weekend I'm traveling to Mumbai on business and will be there two weeks. I will most likely be very busy the first week so won't do much other than working and then back to the hotel. I didn't do my homework as far as getting shots for Hep A, B or malaria. Too late for that now. I try to avoid all medications and don't even consider an aspirin unless I really have pain. I'm not a total vegetarian by any stretch but avoid all dairy and red meat. Usually make an organic green smoothy for breakfast every day. Just looking for some tips to avoid getting ill... Thanks Post Date: 05/06/13, Replies: 6 | ||

| Travel in Spain I have been to Europe, Spain a few times on travel and I deem Spain is a beautiful country and cities like Barcelona and Madrid and I'd love to go back for awhile. If you're in Barcelona be sure to check out the Picasso museum as well. Finally I think the best way to get around Spain is by train. If you want to have a holiday abroad, I firstly recommend you go to Spain! That's great! Post Date: 10/31/07, Replies: 5 |
