| new vegan - feeling drowsy on carbs Hi, I'm a new vegan (one month old) and I work as a post lady, so need plenty of calories. I've been eating a lot of pulses and millet with oils to get enough calories as well as plenty of vegetables. (I easily lose weight if I don't eat enough). But I feel really sleepy soon after a main meal, and my joints have been aching a bit, and clicking. Any ideas of how I can adjust things to feel better? Thanks everyone. | new vegan and constipated?? hi. I'm a new vegan, it's been about 2 months. when I first went vegan i was really bloated and it sucked. after that my digestion was amazing and I had 2-3 bowel movements a day. for the last 2 weeks or so I've been kind of constipated. my stool is soft but they're tiny and hard to push out. i can also see what I ate like it didn't get digested. I eat enough, I drink lots of water, and I exercise pretty hard 5 days a week. I avoid processed foods and fatty foods, including oil. I have a lot of fiber in my diet, I think I might even be getting too much. I'm very fatigued and gassy. sometimes my lower back hurts and I get dizzy and nauseous. I'm very tired of it so I would really really appreciate some advice (: Post Date: 05/21/16, Replies: 5 | ||

| New Vegetarian in College - Help Needed I recently decided to go vegetarian and so far I have been meat-free for 3 whole days! I'm very excited about the change in my diet, but I am finding it very hard to get in enough protein in my diet. Additionally, I have Celiac's Disease and can't eat any gluten products. I cannot prepare any food, besides what can be warmed up in a microwave or what can be made in a blender, (I have a Magic Bullet.) I would really like to stick with it. I had always wanted to try being a vegetarian when I was younger, but it never really stuck. After watching Food Inc., my decision was solidified. I really need some help - what can I eat for protein, and what are some good snacks to keep on stock? I would really appreciate any input - thanks for the help everyone! | New Vegetarian, Tips and Encouragement plz Hey everyone! My husband and I have recently decided to become vegetarians. I have been completely of of meat for two days. I had a little fish the 2 days prior to that. My husband is going for the gradual approach and is not completely off yet. I have been really excited for this new way of life and have done a lot of research. However, I was discouraged a bit today at work by a doctor that I really love. Can anyone tell me if they have had any health related problems(caused from going vegetarian) and what I can do to prevent any myself? I am hoping for a healthier lifestyle and have been a little upset by his comments. Any advice on this matter or tips in general would be greatly appreciated! Post Date: 10/10/15, Replies: 4 | ||

| Next Level Health Tips Here are a few ideas on how to take it to the next level! First, it is vitally important to get clean water from a spring or deep well, to bottle in glass. It's also good to drink a good amount of water to stay hydrated. I also recommend reading and staying on point with nourishing material, from superfood guru, David Wolfe, to Bridgette Mars. Another cool idea is add in superfoods, meaning foods with high levels of real natural nutrition, like Lucuma, you only need a teaspoon to tablespoon. Camu Camu Berry is some of highest Vitamin C known. Goji Berries for a large spectrum of minerals and Vitamin C, you only need 5 or 6 berries a day. Also, get from top level supply. Raw Cacao is also awesome, great for many body nourishment. Kale is excellent for vegans and vegatarians due to it's high level of Iron. I recommend, detoxing in Saunas and/or by sweating. In todays society there are an abundance of toxins from stress and numerous other sources. Therefore, to allow the lymph system to flush by sweating may be a good idea. I have put together some of the best nutrition foods in the world and of the highest quality available, not for business, but for everyone's health. You can check it out at amoraeashop dot com. We ship to your door! I highly recommend our Rainbow Smoothie Mix, totally amazing and my best friends love it. I also recommend outdoors, sunshine, and a good book. Thank You for being beautiful, even if your not trying. Blessings Post Date: 11/02/12, Replies: 4 | ||
| Old vegan I have recently become a vegan and just kept an appointment with my cardiologist. She said being vegan would be the healthiest diet for the kind of heart condition I have, but she was concerned about the protein intake. According to her, older people lose muscle mass anyway and becoming a vegan could mean even more lost. And she thinks keeping track of the protein would be complicated. She wants me to eat fish three times a week and an egg twice a week. In everything vegan I have read, there is supposed to be enough protein in the diet. Does that go for elderly people too? I am 76 and have waited this long to decide to eat healthy. Now I am confused. I don't know whether to continue being vegan or give it up because of my doctor's advice. | Olive oil Hi Everybody, I have been lurking on the forum for a little while, and reading your posts with interest. As I am neither vegan nor vegetarian, I have very little to offer in the sense of advice. However I am concerned what foodstuffs I consume, and it is also very important form my 7 year old son as he has allergies to certain additives found in Supermarket food. We are lucky enough to live in Spain, where fresh produce can be found on the daily market in the town we live in. As you probably all know one of the most important ingredients of the Mediterranean diet is olive oil, and that is what I was getting to. I work for a small family business, in which we produce our own extra virgin olive oil (and also related products, but more of that later in my story). We produce four varietals of olive oil, two of which are certified organic. And I was thinking that they might appeal to the members of this community. The first one is Wild Organic from the first cold extraction. Don't let the word extraction fool you, we get the oil from the olives solely by mechanical means, and in this case by centrifuge after the olives have been crushed. The second is our Wild Organic from the stone mill. Yes, this oil is indeed crushed on an authentic stone olive mill, and is pressed by a hydraulic press. As mentioned before , we also produce other products i.e. soap, both cream soap and solid soap, which are made from only one fat source, Extra Virgin olive oil. We use a process called super-fatting, which means that the resulting soap contains olive oil that has not partaken in the saponification process. This ensures that all the lye is used, and that the soap contains very small amounts of olive oil to moisturize the skin. I'm sure everyone on these forums knows the health benefits of good quality olive oil, but if you want to learn more, head over to our website, where in the section "Information of Interest" there is a wealth of educational material. I am in a position to offer the members of this community a discount of 15% if you wish to purchase any of our products, and you can get the discount by using the code "happycow2015". I am not going to time limit the coupon code, so use it at your leisure, and by all means give it to anyone who is looking for good quality olive oil. A distant cousin of our family who lives in California, takes care of shipping our products in the US and Canada, so delivery is usually somewhere between 2-5 days. Anyway, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this post, and if anyone has any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them. | Organic vs Conventional Farming Howdy everyone, I am curious to hear some opinions on the pros and cons of organic farming compared to conventional farming. During the summer I work/cultivate for an organic farmer on my father’s land. My primary job is to cultivate soybeans, corn and milo fields after they have been planted. This process leads me cultivate the same field up to 3-4 times, depending on the amount of moisture. I feel that driving the tractor over the land that many extra times is harmful to the environment, plus it adds a lot of extra work. Conventional farmers would simply spray their fields once with fertilizer and later harvest the crop, decreasing the amount of fuel used. But, it is my belief that synthetic fertilizer is harmful to the farmers using it and the consumers when we eat it. My boss gets his fertilizer from organic cattle manure, which I think is a better option. I have read some articles stating that organic farm yields are much lower than conventional farms. I’m not sure if that’s true or not. If true, it would be difficult to feed the world’s population if every farm was organic. Any thoughts or comments? Matthew Lee Post Date: 10/28/14, Replies: 7 | ||

| People be aware! Please go to www.organicconsumers.org to find out whole truth. Whole Foods Market,Organic Valley, and Stonyfield support Monsanto's GE alfalfa. What is next? Apples, oranges, pears, peaches, and many other vegetables? I care about not just my own health but health of animals and our environment. How about you people? Isn't there more important things other than profit? I am so disgusted. The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well. True coexistence is a must." - Whole Foods Market, Jan. 21, 2011 In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto's Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation's 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America's organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, has decided it's time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto's controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for "coexistence" with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack. | Piss Drinking- take care- risky in Canada! Personally I choose to drink pure water, teas, fruit juices & vegetable juices - I am not in favor of drinking my own urine or the urine of cows! Are there any "piss takers" here on HappyCow.net? Do you get "Chinese AUT urges" or "Morarji Desai moments"? http://www.lifepositive.com/Body/traditional-therapies/urine-therapy.asp Excerpt - + According to Xinhua news agency more than three million Chinese drink their own urine believing that it is good for their health. AUT (Auto-Urine Therapy) is an ancient practice as it finds mention in many old texts of India such as Shivambhu Kalpa Vidhi and Damar Tantra. Shivambhu literally means water of Lord Shiva, a Hindu God. Urine therapists often speak of drinking Shivambhu, which means drinking the water of auspiciousness. Former Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai, who lived up to the age of 99, has been the most well known proponent of this therapy. He claimed that India would have been better off if more people used this extremely inexpensive and effective way of treatment. He also attributed to AUT the credit for his longevity. + The US Military recommend against it if you a soldier gets lost in Iraq / Afghanistan - so John McCain & General David Petraeus are also probably "dead against it" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urophagia Excerpt - + It has been suggested that when a person is in desert survival or surrounded by salt water and devoid of drinking water that the person must resort to drinking his/her own urine if it is the only liquid available. As it tends to cause further dehydration due to the salts in it, drinking urine for survival is advised against by the US Army Field Manual,.............. + Amazon.com now has a whole section of their company dedicated to it - http://www.amazon.com/Books-about-Auto-Urine-Therapy-AUT/lm/25346DLFEDEQJ Though if you do decide to buy any of the books please always enter Amazon through the HappyCow link - so that your piss drinking benefits the HappyCows also - http://www.amazon.com/?&tag=happycow-20&camp=211493&creative=376649&linkCode=ez&adid=1G8YKQBJJ3NR282V1GZY& In India drinking cow's urine AKA "taking the piss of the Mother" is almost the norm - http://www.business-india.in/articles.php?file=gomutra.php However be careful, be careful, be careful not to develop mad cow disease - especially if you are a cow urine drinker living in or visiting Canada - http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601082&sid=aKJgvMj2o_LQ&refer=canada + Urine Has Clue That May Lead to Mad Cow Test, Scientists Say + By Stefanie Batcho-Lino Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian scientists have discovered a way to detect mad cow disease in urine, a finding that could lead to the first test for the infection in live animals. Researchers, working with Germany's Research Institute for Animal Health, found that changes in the level of a certain protein in cattle urine signaled the presence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, more commonly known as mad cow disease, Canadian health officials said today in a statement. Presently animals can only be diagnosed with mad cow after death. Canada confirmed its 14th case of mad cow disease on Aug. 15, which sent cattle futures lower. Last year, the U.S. lifted most of its restrictions on Canadian beef and cattle after determining the animals pose ``minimal risk'' for BSE. People can get the disease by eating meat from infected animals. ``We are hopeful that at some point in the future the knowledge gained from this study will make it possible to test live cattle,'' Dr. David Knox, a scientist at the laboratory and lead researcher on the study published in Proteome Science, said in the statement. The scientists analyzed the proteins in urine samples taken from four infected and four healthy cows. They also found that increases in the amount of protein corresponded with progression of mad cow disease in the animals, the statement said. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Quote by Morarji Desai - "One has got to choose between the two evils, also between the lesser of the two evils in the matter of food, and therefore vegetarian food has got to he taken by man in order to sustain human life." http://www.indianpoliticians.com/profile/9/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Post Date: 09/01/09, Replies: 3 | ||
| Plant-based health study: already @ day 16 Hi, everyone! I just wanted to post an update on the progress of our Plant-based Health Study going on. Today is day 16 and we have successfully gotten all of our participants past the 2 week mark without losing anyone! Yay! Some have had their ups and downs with the transition but we are doing our best to support them through all parts. For those of you who are not aware, I am a physician in the L.A area who advocates a plant-based diet. I am currently doing a quantitative health study on the benefits of a plant-based diet (vegan). If you would like to learn more please visit my blog/site. The parameters of the study are all listed as well as all the participants and their respective stories. They have all switched from either a SAD or a vegetarian diet to a Vegan one and are doing so for 60 days as we measure various health parameters. Each one of our participants health info including labs are posted on the site for full transparency purposes! Additionally, the participants are blogging several times a week (on their pages) about their experiences (hence the above mentioned ups and downs!). I'm sure they would love your support and kind words if you should decide to stop by. They have been telling me the comments on their pages help to keep them going on tough days. =) We will be doing our 30 day testing coming up in a week and a half and we are excited to see and post those results to compare to our baselines as soon as they are available. Hope everyone is well! I love this site! Jenna Post Date: 02/02/11, Replies: 0 | ||
| Plant-Based Personal Training/ Nutrition Hi there guys, I have been viewing this forum for many years now and referring to it as a resource, but haven't contributed an awful lot! I have been vegetarian for 13 years, vegan for 9 years, and am a highly experienced Advanced Level 4 PT, Sports Therapist and Nutrition Consultant for the last 5-6 years. I don't want to spam the forum with advertising, but if anyone is interested in my services or would be interested in helping to spread the word please feel free to do so. It would be much appreciated! A bit about me - I am a keen martial artist (Muay Thai and Wing Chun in particular) and have competed in a fair few ultra-marathons over the last few years. Whilst certainly not a 'pro' level sports person, I have seen my own personal performances improving over the years, (particularly since becoming vegan!) and have managed to build up my Muay Thai to compete in an Interclub fight, get certified to Instructor Grade in Wing Chun, and have also seen a few top 10 places in Ultra marathons. I would love to be able to offer support and guidance to those of you are perhaps new or struggling with the vegan lifestyle or improving your health or sporting performance in accordance with this. I offer 1-2-1 personal training sessions in my private studio, online/distance training and nutrition programmes, sports massage and exercise/injury rehabilitation services, pilates for improved sporting performance, nutrition consultations and more. | Please don't make same mistake I made I was so healthy and I always bragging about my health for many years but recently, I wake up several times at night to go bathroom to urinate. There are many natural remedies for old people who are suffering from same problem I am suffering. Many people found solution to this problem by eating pumpkin seeds or pumpkin seeds extract with soy. Few weeks ago, I ordered pumpkin seeds from www.ohnuts.com and ate almost one package of seeds (one package = one pound) in few days. Guess what? After I finish eating these pumpkin seeds, I start having horrible bloating. When I checked ingredients, canola oil and or cotton seeds oil are part of ingredients. Canola oil and cotton seeds oils are from genetically modified plants and heavily splayed with pesticide. I really start worrying about my health after I consumed pumpkin seeds from above company knowing nobody knows for sure exactly what kind of negative effect on my health. It is so scarly about consumption of Genetically Modified food we eat but knowing so many foods contain wheat, soy, corn, canola and cotton seeds oil, etc, it is so difficult for us to avoid foods conatain GMO. Please read ingredients before you buy foods and avoid GMO as much as you can. [email protected] [email protected] Post Date: 02/04/11, Replies: 4 | ||
| Possible B12 Vitamin Problem Hey everyone! I'm new here and I've been having a issue that I think might be related to lack of vitamin or a possible overdose. I'm 22 and a vegetarian, but I don't eat cheese or a lot of dairy. I have been taking a multivitamin for vegetarians for awhile now, which has basically everything including the B vitamins in it like B12. I also just started taking a B12 supplement. The type that you put under your tongue to dissolve. Every since I started them (it's been a couple of weeks now), I have been feeling a vibration through my body. I'm not shaking , but it feels like I am inside. It's hard to fall asleep and sit still. I led it back to the start of the B12 supplement so I stopped taking them yesterday, but I'm still experiencing vibration. I'm hoping that it fades. I also deal with anxiety at times too. I have an appointment with my doctor next week, but I was curious if anyone had any information on this that could help. Thanks Post Date: 03/15/13, Replies: 11 | ||

| Prejudice Doctors So, I'm a vegan, have been for 4 years, and I got a blood test recently. The results came back and said I was not anaemic and not even deficient in anything. However, my doctor told me that being a vegan was "Not how humans are supposed to be" that we're "Not designed to be vegan" and has referred me to a dietician to discuss what I eat. Does the fact that my blood test was perfectly normal not show that veganism is a healthy lifestyle choice?! Does anyone else have this problem with healthcare? Should I complain or something? Help!! I take food technology (Home Economics) as a subject, and as part of our final study we have to look at certain themes, such as special diets. If you are interested, please leave a message on here, and a way I can contact you, and I'll happily send you the ten questions. Any help will be appreciated. Zoe Post Date: 07/24/11, Replies: 8 | ||

| rash because of vegetarianism??? hi! a friend of mine changed for being vegetarian some years ago. after being that for a while he broke out in a rash. red spots started to cover his body everywhere! first he thought he was alergic to his new bought cats, but when he didn`t know what to do anymore, he tried to eat meat again-and the rash disappeared for good. desperately wanting to be vegetarian he tried again now.And again the rash shoed up on his arms! what could the reason be? is there something missing in his diet? unfortunately he doesn`t trust doctors and doesn`t want to take bloodsamples so it is hard to check. but does anybody know what to do??? thanks so much for help!
