I bleed easily since I went vegan - why? Hi. I have been donating blood for some years now and I only started my vegan lifestyle a couple of months ago. Since then, every time I have donated blood, I have to apply pressure on the puncture site several hours or else it starts bleeding again. I am super healthy and I take care that I get enough vitamin K. Can anyone explain why I bleed so easily? Post Date: 01/19/17, Replies: 1
I cured angina with vegetarian diet 1997 I became a vegetarian in 1997 shortly after being diagnosed with angina and advised to have bypass surgery. The diet was eventually successful so I was able to stop taking angina medication after six months, and haven't needed the surgery. I wrote a public talk about it in 2005-6, and posted some information about it on my webpage soon after, and later produced an audio CD on the talk which is now avaialble on itunes. It is listed as a 'song' on an album, but is actually a 40 minute talk about that experience, The webpage can be seen for free here users.chariot.net.au/~posture/AnginaDietCure.html The CD can be dowloaded for a small cost, and if you wish to comment or review the talk you are welcome to. I have to feed my baby meat? Little bit of background, I'm a dairy free vegetarian and I have a five month old son. When he's 6 months we'll be introducing solids and I plan to keep him on my diet. We went to his checkup, and he's doing great! We have the same doctor, and I loved her. She was amazing through delivery of my son, so supportive. So she said we can start to introduce solids slowly at 6 months. Fruits, veggies, grains, ....meats, then whole milk at 1. I told her I wouldn't be feeding him meat or dairy, and I would let him breastfeed as long as he wants even if he goes past 1. She looked very confused and said "I understand why you'd make that choice, but why would you make it for him." .... he's my son. It makes sense for us to have the same diet. As his mother it's my job to provide him with the best of everything that I possibly can, and that includes diet. I felt so uncomfortable that she was talking down to me as if I want my son to be deficient, we've had a great relationship up until this point. She said that I have to wait until he's 2 years old. She said before he's 2 years old, I can't provide this diet for him without it significantly damaging his health. Any advice, opinions, resources appreciated, thank you. I want to know! What is organic food? From where can we buy organic products? Actually, I’m suffering from health problems and my family doctor has suggested me to take only organic food. So I want to know more about organic food and their recipes. Please let me know if you have any information. Thanks. Post Date: 11/20/07, Replies: 2
Improving Gall Bladder Health I repeatedly get gall stones forming in my gall bladder, I've been told that my gall bladder is 'sick' and doesn't function effectively at contracting and draining the bile out. I've been told there is no way to help this and it will only worsen. Does anyone know of any effective ways of improving gall bladder health please and reducing the formation of stones. I mostly stick to a low fat diet, but eat oily fish and nuts. Has anyone out there managed to improve the health of their gall bladder or no longer gets stones (or at least problem stones) without removing the gall bladder? Many thanks Post Date: 11/17/10, Replies: 3

Increasing Iron and Iron Absorption? I'm a Vegan who's looking to change my diet to include more iron-rich and iron-absorbing enhancer foods in daily meals, as I get anemic often. Any tips? Post Date: 11/06/07, Replies: 9
Interactions between soy and thyroxine Vegans, vegetarians and omnis taking thyroxine/synthroid for hypothyroidism would benefit from the knowledge that soy can impair the effectiveness of their thyroid medication and result in a return of the hypothyroid symptoms. http://www.rotherhampct.nhs.uk/knowledgeservice/documents/Enquiries/CQAS/soyand%20thyroxine.doc Post Date: 11/05/08, Replies: 2
Is vegetarian the answer? I have divium of pancreatis(small duct opening into stomach)causing some digestive issues. I also have asthma,(no known food alergies), and I have had trouble in past with whole wheat products. To be brief, have read all the heart, CA etc issues. Know the junk they put in foods..don't have to be sold that natural is better..so a big garden yearly..just some concern about digesting some things..Have a lot of trouble with any citrus. Tolerate tomatoes in moderation..just wondered if others may have some insight..Son says do it..He is nurse, and vegan. Thank you V Post Date: 04/05/08, Replies: 3
It is so hard for us to avoid GMO opposingdigits.com/forums/post-62.html When my daughter sent me e-mail and told me to check link above, I realized how hard for us to avoid genetically modified ingredients knowing almost all foods in market contain GMO. Sadly, I ate so many foods with genetically modified ingredients already. Post Date: 11/08/11, Replies: 1

Just a note... I know that I (and lots of other happycow members) have provided some advice to other members on health and nutrition. I just wanted to make sure everyone knows the importance that this information is solely for educational purposes and is in no way to replace an actual medical visit. This website has a wealth of excellent information from a lot of great minds but please remember if you have any medical concerns or needs please see your medical doctor or healthcare provider. Lethargic vegetarian advice? Hello. I've been fully vegetarian for just over 2 years and although I'm not a vegan I try to make vegan choices where possible and only eat eggs from a friend who keeps chickens in her large garden etc. The problem is I get very lethargic and it doesn't matter if I spend all day sat on the sofa or 10 hours at work I still spend the whole day feeling sluggish. Im a bit concerned about my iron levels as I seem to be extra tired during my time of the month wgive I know is normal for iron levels to drop at this time. Has anybody been through a similar thing or have any advice? I feel like I've been bombarded with information and advice about vegetarian foods high in protein but nobody seems to speak of iron or vitamin b12. I eat healthy but I must be doing something wrong. Thanks in advance Post Date: 01/19/16, Replies: 2
Looking for a Vitamix Turboblend VS Hi! I've been vegan for quite a while now, and as a teenager I have been really conscious of my health lately and would like to go even greener. Does anyone happen to have a Vitamix Turboblend VS with all accessories they would like to sell that would be willing to ship to California? I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to put this thread... But thank you so much in advance! Sleepless Post Date: 04/24/13, Replies: 1
Lost and looking for direction Hi, I'm brand new here and hope I'm in the right forum. I signed up today because my son has been talking to me about wanting to live full vegan, but we have a problem that our nutritionist doesn't seem to be able to wrap her head around. My son is allergic to nuts, beans and all legumes including peanuts and soybeans, and through trial and error we've discovered he's got numerous gluten sensitivities. Wheat and its cousins all cause stomach upset, and he can semi-tolerate oats. Most seeds seem to be okay, so there's that at least. My question is, what in God's name is he supposed to be able to eat to give both adequate protein and variety? We've given up completely on anything remotely processed from the store because everything has nuts or soy. Specifically, we're trying to find recipes that don't end with the concoction tasting like fish flavored cardboard made out of rotted grass. One can only add so much spirulina before it starts to taste like regurgitated sea floor, and while chia and hemp seeds help the protein a little, again too much to get the right combo and adequate amount ends with the product tasting terrible (not to mention bowel irritation). I know there's got to be things I've either overlooked or never heard of that someone has to have experience with. Thank you to any that can help. Post Date: 10/06/15, Replies: 5
Low-tyramine diet for vegetarians??? Hi Everyone! I wonder if anyone in the community is on low-tyramine diet? I'm just starting a type of drugs (MAOIs) that require low-tyramine diet and there's so much "scary" info on the web that I'm at a loss as to what (NOT) to eat... If anyone has got any experience, please share! Thanks! Post Date: 05/08/11, Replies: 2
Media Reports on Supplements Perhaps there are other people who read the New York Times editorial or saw the Frontline show on the issue of the effectiveness and safety of supplements. www.nytimes.com/2013/12/15/opinion/sunday/skip-the-supplements.html?_r=0 www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/supplements-and-safety/ The Frontline special reports on cases where supplements caused harm. They also raise questions such as label accuracy, fraud, effectiveness and whether they are needed at all. The issue of people on a vegan or vegetarian diet is not addressed in either of these; and in the New York Times editorial they recommended taking none (unless USP certified of which there aren’t that many); however, in the case of vegetarian/vegans the situation can be different because of the diet. I'd just like to share some of the things I looked into in this post. People may also be able to find this doing searches if they have a similar question, and other sources could be added in responses. When I did searches I didn’t find that much. I found a listing from The New York Times of organizations that do testing on supplements: well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/02/12/107141/ The four organizations are: 1. USP - United States Pharmacopeia - Nonprofit organization focused on quality and safety of pharmaceuticals 2. NSF - Nonprofit organization that evaluates the safety of various products. 3. ConsumerLab - Company which does testing and then sells the analysis. (currently $64 for two years of $39 for one year) 4. LabDoor - Start-up company which purchases supplements off the shelf and then pays for FDA approved labs to analyze the contents. As far as I can tell the information is currently being provided for free. They speak further about their business model here which is based on consumer purchases: https://labdoor.com/faq/why-we-sell-products ConsumerLab currently has evaluations of two Deva supplements: (vitamin E and Omega-3): https://www.consumerlab.com/Search/Deva-Review LabDoor currently has analysis of three vegan supplements: Deva Vegan Multivitamin, Deva Vegan Prenatal Multivitamin, Sunwarrior Warrior Blend Raw Vegan Protein: https://labdoor.com/review?q=vegan One other thing that I looked into is self-testing one's vitamin D level. I found one available for $50 (for one test). A blood spot card is sent in the mail to a laboratory and then the results can be obtained. https://www.vitamindcouncil.org/testkit/ On the question of testing vitamin D a blog post from Harvard Medical school says that such tests are not in general needed and that there isn't consensus about what a healthy vitamin D level is. "For one thing, experts don’t agree on what low vitamin D means. Some laboratories define it as below 20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), others set it at below 50 ng/mL. In addition, tests for vitamin D aren’t standardized or reliable." www.health.harvard.edu/blog/vitamin-d-testing-recommended-people-201411267547 David Friedman Post Date: 03/11/16, Replies: 0
Medical Maggot and Leech Therapy Medical Maggot and Leech Therapy -- Invasion of the Eco-Friendly Body Suckers I've been beginning to wonder if I'm the last person on the planet to catch up on medical advances that have apparently been mainstream for quite a while now. Did you know that medical practitioners has been using maggots (baby fly larvae) and leeches (creepy crawly relatives to earthworms) to treat wounds ever since 1000 B.C.? More surprisingly, both critters are being used in medical facilities near you to treat a wide range of ailments, proving as is often the case that Mother Nature seems to always do things just a little bit better than complicated medical technology. www.greenwala.com/profiles/3446-Kieran-K/blog/2033-Medical-Maggot-and-Leech-Therapy-Invasion-of-the-Eco-Friendly-Body-Suckers Please read the article, check out the videos and then share your perspective on whether you could submit yourself to this type of treatment or not. Menstruation issues Hi, So I turned vegan about 6months ago and my periods were fine, though I haven't have my period for more than 2 months now so I kind of worry a bit because I don't know what could be wrong, moreover I had my blood test results and they were pretty good so I'd love to hear from you if you had any issues like me thanks :) Post Date: 10/28/16, Replies: 1
Menstruation issues since going vegan I will be vegan for a month on Friday and for the most part I feel great. However during my last period and during the time of ovulation I got really weak dizzy and light headed. I also got a migraine and I never get those. I am wondering if it was low iron and if so what is a good source of vegan iron. Post Date: 04/11/16, Replies: 8
MY FAMILY IS BECOMING VEGAN HELLO! I am a mother to two beautiful children, a boy six months old and a little girl two years old. I am also a wife to a wonderful man that I love very much. We've recently decided to become Vegan and need help beginning. It is very important that we do this correctly for the health of our children. I don't want to accidently malnourish them. Our daughter is unique in the way that she eats everything. Kale, Chard, Tofu, Edamame and nearly every fruit available. There isn't much she honestly dislikes. I don't see it being too difficult of a transistion for her. As for my husband, maybe a bit more difficult. I know I'll miss fish the most. Along with cheeses. I need a shopping list. I shop one month at a time except for fresh veggies. Can anyone Help? Post Date: 02/17/13, Replies: 8

Natural control of blood pressure I like any advice and direction that anyone could provide on natural ways to help lower high blood pressure. I'm a Vegan, and would greatly like to get off my pills and into natural and organic ways to keep my blood pressure down. I've just begun to use Yoga for stress reduction, and breathing for control, but anything additional I could do to get it under control would be greatly appreciated. Post Date: 10/20/14, Replies: 11

NEW Course for a Healthy Heart - T. Colin T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and eCornell partner with top Ivy League faculty to offer new online course [ITHACA, NY] The T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, in partnership with eCornell, is pleased to announce the release of a new online course, “Nutrition for a Healthy Heart.” The new course features lectures from Cornell University faculty, the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, as well as bestselling authors and researchers. “Most people know that heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the U.S. and other Western countries,” says Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus at Cornell University. “And most people know, more or less, that diet is a factor in causing heart disease, but only a few really know how profound is this effect or which foods might be problematic. It’s time to highlight scientific evidence that demonstrates how heart disease can be prevented and, even more dramatically, how people can be treated to reverse this disease.” The two-week course is designed to be readily accessible to the public without scientific or medical training, while offering new research for a variety of health professionals. Topics range from contemporary heart disease research and medical practices to stocking a kitchen with heart-healthy foods. Like the Center’s best-selling Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition, the heart course plans to offer continuing education credits for a variety of health disciplines. eCornell’s unique approach to online learning combines cutting-edge technologies with Ivy League thought leadership in an engaging, collaborative online learning environment. eCornell’s online courses are self-paced, instructor-facilitated, and focus on real-world objectives. eCornell has delivered online courses to more than 50,000 students in more than 200 countries. “Collaborating with the Center for Nutrition Studies furthers our commitment to maximizing the opportunity for anyone, anywhere to receive impactful content directly from Cornell University,” says Chad Oliveiri, eCornell’s Vice President of Content and Partnerships. “It’s not at all a stretch to say the content we’re building with the Center is truly life-changing.” The T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, formerly known as the T. Colin Campbell Foundation, is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization based in Ithaca, NY. Their mission is to promote optimal nutrition through science-based education, advocacy, and research.
