Gaining weight on a vegan diet I've been a vegan for 10 months now. The first month I lost 2 or 3 kg without working out at all, but after that I started gaining weight and I don't know why. I eat low fat and as many vegetables as possible, I do eat quite a lot of rice though, I'm not sure if that would be the problem? Has anyone had similar problems? Post Date: 01/05/17, Replies: 7
Going OFF the Vegetarian Diet In the past years I've come across vegetarians and vegans who sad they "had to get off the vegetarian diet for health reasons." Has any one of you out there heard of this? Personally, I do believe that you have to listen to your body and feel what it wants. Although I advocate a vegetarian diet (for compassion towards the animals, for the sake of the environment, and for health reasons), I do also feel that not everyone can thrive on a vegetarian or vegan diet. But then again, there are MANY who thrive on a veggie diet. What do you guys think? Post Date: 08/03/09, Replies: 26

GREAT LIVER CLEANSER BEETROOT The vegetable that I most strongly recommend for general health improvement and especially for those with cancer is beetroot. The purple pigment has been shown to increase and normalise cell respiration - the oxygen-based energy production within cells. Thus beetroot is one of the key foods in preventing as well as curing cancer. It is equally important in the treatment of other degenerative diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome that are all characterised by reduced cell respiration. .The active ingredient in beetroot is called betacyanin with two carbonyl groups (C=0-). What happens when cellular energy is produced through the oxidation of nutrients is that electrons and hydrogen ions are transferred onto the inhaled oxygen to produce water and energy. In cancer cells and with chronic fatigue the respiratory enzymes that accomplish this transfer have been diminished or destroyed. The colour pigment in beetroot (and other purple food) strongly binds electrons and hydrogen and with this can reactivate the production of cellular oxidative energy. Seeger and others (1990) have shown that the respiration of cancer cells can be completely normalised by a combination of beetroot, raw fermented food and vitamin C. The multiplication of cancer cells would thus stop, and tumours become non-virulent. Clinical tests using beetroot with cancer patients revealed that often tumours regressed and disappeared. Therefore use plenty of beetroot grated in salads, juiced and cooked; also the residue from juicing may be cooked. Occasionally a small root may leave an acrid aftertaste. Taste suspect roots before making salads or juice; cooking them is fine, and beet tops may be cooked also. Tinned beetroot has lost most of its pigments and is of little value.Beetroot may be available only seasonally. You may store a larger quantity in moist sand. Keep the tops exposed in a cool, shaded place with just enough moisture to prevent drying out. After a good root system has developed you may also let them continue to grow in a sandy and well drained soil, neither too wet nor too dry to avoid rotting or mould development, check frequently. Headache when switching to vegan? Hello lovely happy cow community! I'm a brand new vegan...four days. I've been a vegetarian for about a month, but the mountain of positive evidence for living a full vegan lifestyle have kept pilling higher and higher, and I finally decided that I couldn't ignore it anymore and needed to make the switch. In the change to vegan, I not only cut out dairy and other animal products, but also out refined sugars, corn bi-products, and most processed foods. Yesterday and today, I've had stomach pains and pretty severe headaches. Is this just part of the detox process? If so, any guesses on how long it should last? I drink plenty of water (10-12 cups/day), and I eat a wide variety of healthy, whole foods, so I really can't think of anything specifically wrong in my diet that could be causing these symptoms. Headaches and Restlessness Ive been vegan for a really long time now and I recently have been suffering from headaches, constipation and insomnia. Also my whole right side of my body is swollen too and my mom says its a genetic thing but, I only started noticing it. I went to the emergency room to get a CT scan and I don't have anything wrong in my head atm. My cats have worms and ive been thinking that's what it is but, Ive been doing tons of research in hopes of curing this. I am currently on a parasitic cleanse to see if that fixes it. Also I take vitamin B12, C, Iron and a probiotic regularly. I don't eat many greens either. If anyone knows what is wrong with me please help. Post Date: 07/12/15, Replies: 3
Healing Cancer DVD I just watched this on the plane ride to LA last week... wow its really good. I also watched Eating by the same people. http://www.ravediet.com/ I can't recommend enough that you buy/borrow this DVD or give it to anyone who is diagnosed with cancer. Its beyond shocking and if I'd had it just a few years ago I'd have a few more friends still with me. Post Date: 04/06/08, Replies: 1

Heart palpitations and extreme cold Hey there lovely people, I am looking for answers from those more experienced than me......I have been a vegetarian for almost a year now (yay) and I have noticed that lately I am getting heart palpitations-to the point that I wake up at night- and am so very cold all the time-I wear three layers to bed and am STILL cold! I take Red iron, b12, b6 and recently have added magnesium. I am low in iron and vitamin d. Could this cause the heart palpitations? I also get muscle twitches and every bone cracks! I have looked on the internet for possible causes but my head spins at the number of things it could be related to. Could it be a calcium deficiency? Help-so confused!! Post Date: 11/06/15, Replies: 4
HELP! I am soo confused! I have been vegetarian for over 7 years now, and I am now starting/trying to be vegan. I have been looking up things vegans can eat, vegan recipes, and hidden non-vegan ingredients. I have found 'vegan' recipes that use non-vegan ingredients! Like peanut butter or sugar. Some say to add soda instead of egg, but apparently soda isn't vegan either. I have found brands that were accidently vegan(on vegan sites) that also test on animals! I have also found brands that were accidently vegan(on vegan sites) that actually were not vegan! And this is all making it very difficult for me, please if you have any advice, I would love to read it. Post Date: 06/18/14, Replies: 10
Homeopathic meds NOT vegan There are 2 major homeopathic brands: Hylands and Boiron. Hylands uses lactose, not derived from beets, rather cows milk. Boiron sometimes uses lactose as well, not always. More alarmingly, I have learned that they derive some meds from things like Duck liver and heart! Beyond grossed out. The nux vomica is one, the oscillococcinum, a main flu remedy, are the ones I heard specifically from serious animal deaths. Gosh. I love herbs and thought homeopathy derived itself from herbs, but how wrong could I be. As a vegans we have to stick to herbs, which is fine. Elderberry and/or Osha Root and such are better anyhow, but it sucks to know the prominence of animal product in other meds... ugh Post Date: 05/27/09, Replies: 0
How can I loose my weight? Hi, I am 22 years old and I am overweight. what kind of diet should I take or you would advice me? Post Date: 12/21/11, Replies: 15
How crazy is this?! OK, bit of background. I am coeliac and also suffer from Crohn's disease (although currently this is in remission) and recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I suffer a lot with pain and fatigue. I have had to gradually transition to vegetarianism because my body doesn't like big diet changes. I was warned not to do it by my GP because I am prone to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly B12. My diet now consists of lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts, gluten free grains, some beans and lentils (the ones my gut will tolerate) tofu, seaweed, unsweetened almond or coconut milk, occasional Quorn pieces, organic eggs, cheese, yoghurt, and I do occasionally eat clams or mussels (bivalves) because of the B12 issue. And of course, the odd bit of treat food. But I find I don't crave sugar as much as I used to. My GP thought I would not thrive on this and I would come to him sick in no time. But my last lot of blood tests? First time in 5 years I don't need any B12 shots, despite reduced dairy intake my calcium is better than it's ever been, and potassium is normal instead of on the edge. I have had anaemia every winter for 5 years, and this year? Iron levels are fine. And only one cold this winter compared to my usual three or four by now. Just goes to show hey..... How Do I Reduce Fiber without Reducing Pro I've been vegetarian for almost 9 months now, and have recently started getting cramped and bloated, with occasional constipation and rough stools. I believe this is because I'm getting too much fiber, but I'm having trouble finding ways to lower my fiber intake and still meet protein requirements. I'm male and weigh 193lbs, so I generally aim for 70g a day. Generally, I eat a lot of legumes, nuts, and whole grains, tons of veggies, and a good amount of eggs and dairy. I realize tofu is low in fiber, but I only rarely eat soy because my family has a history thyroid problems I generally don't eat much seitan, because I'm concerned with high intakes of gluten causing long term harm I know I could cut out some whole grains and eat simple grains and that would reduce some of my fiber, but also protein and other nutrients. I could eat more eggs and dairy, but that's not healthy either. So I'm still left with nuts and legumes being a primary protein source, both being really high in fiber. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Post Date: 10/08/14, Replies: 6
How do vegetarian's deal with vitamins? I know the answer to begin with: Eat well balanced meal with greens, fruits, grains, and legumes. Stay away from dairy, sugars, meat, and so forth. My question is: My son needs more vitamin A in his diet to help clear up the acne on his face -- doctor says... But when looking for vitamins, and I thought I was up on all this, most vitamins are made with gelatin which is meat based. OM GOSH!!! We looked at the dry ones and it is made with fish oils and so forth. Do you vegans / vegetarians that say you are one, eat the properly made vitamins or are you ignorant to it as I was? I tossed out my E, multi vitamin, and so forth. I was stupid and ill-informed. So we now go to four exceptional health food stores in our area, and looking closer at their vitamin section, we noticed that 98% of everything they carry is NOT for the vegetarian community. The irony of this is that the manufactures of these products have misleading company names like NATURES WAY, and so forth. They had a beta carotene that will work, but the other 12 beta carotene products contain gelatin and other animal products. So what do you do for your vitamins? Omega 3's come from plant life as well... Post Date: 10/06/10, Replies: 11
How do you create personalized menus? Hello, my name is Stefanie Morelli! I've been a vegetarian for about 2 months and chose this lifestyle due to animal torture/violence. However, I still haven't figured out how to make a proper menu for my height & weight. I am 28 years old, 4'8" & weigh 129. Overall I would like to lose 30lbs. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm so grateful for sites like Happy Cow that allow me and others to connect! I'm extremely excited about this lifestyle change and can't wait to meet others who share the same passion! :) Post Date: 07/28/09, Replies: 1

I bleed easily since I went vegan - why? Hi. I have been donating blood for some years now and I only started my vegan lifestyle a couple of months ago. Since then, every time I have donated blood, I have to apply pressure on the puncture site several hours or else it starts bleeding again. I am super healthy and I take care that I get enough vitamin K. Can anyone explain why I bleed so easily? Post Date: 01/19/17, Replies: 1
