| 4000 calories on a Vegan diet? Hey everybody, I'm really into weight training and I'm trying to put on a lot of mass (bulking), I'm 16 and I weigh 175 pounds, I've gained about ten pounds of muscle in the past few weeks and I'm happy with how its going but I also really want to go Vegan (I currently am not), can someone tell me how to consume around 4000 calories on a Vegan diet? I know it can be done but I'd like some advice, thanks! Post Date: 09/12/16, Replies: 5 | ||
| A Diet of Sun Light and Water Have you been following the story of Navenna Shine? She's a 65 year old woman who lives in Seattle. She's trying to emulate an obscure group of yogis known as the Breatharians, who supposedly had the ability to live on nothing more than sun light. Ms. Shine is now 33 days into her diet and has lost 20 pounds. Her goal is to be on this diet for SIX MONTHS. What do you think? Post Date: 10/08/14, Replies: 12 | ||
| A new book on raising vegetarian children Dear veg community, if somebody has questions on raising veg kids, I recommend a new book from a friend of mine - Valntin Grand, named "How we brought up a vegetarian: According to the principles of health". His wife is a medician and also a long-term vegetarian (or maybe already vegan). The book on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B01BM24YS8 Post Date: 02/19/16, Replies: 0 | ||

| Advice on going vegan Hi all! So I have found that in approaching this subject that many vegans get offended by my contraints and reasons why I am happy being an omnivore, a well educated omnivore with two degrees: one in Environmental Studies and the other in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability and working towards a master's in forestry. So if you have no kind input please do not respond. THank you. I have a few vegan friends and have asked them the same advice I am asking you and they really didn't have an answer because they don't have dietary restrictions for health reasons, nor do they have time restrictions. Mind you nothing in my life is going to change in terms of time restrictions and financial restrictions. It's just how my life is at the moment and will be likely for the next 4 years. That being said, please just provide me adivce based on my contraints because those will not change. I'm sorry to sound 'uppity' but I've gotten a lot of mean responses saying i need to change my life and schedule, which is obviously not going to happen. I'm merely seeking a way to save money on food a few days a week, and maintain my macros which make me feel best and most energetic and happy. I have heard that veganism is very cost effective. That being said, can I go vegan for 3 days a week maintaining the following macros based on the following dietary constraints: I am allergic to soy, dairy, gluten, and highly sensitive to starches, grains, any and all processed foods. I eat raw veggies, fruits, fish, eggs, chicken, beef (all lean), seeds, nuts. THe macros I maintain are: ~80-120 grams of protein a day sometimes more, I am moderate to very active in my lifestyle; 150 or less carbs but most of my carbs are from veggies--too much fruit and sugar in general makes my sleep and anxiety so bad. I'm very sensitive to sugar. I eat ~35-40 grams fiber any more I bloat, any less than 25 grams I feel 'backed up'; low sodium (sensitive to sodium I retain water like you wouldn't believe even drinking over a gallon a day); I drink approx. a gallon of water a day, give or take, depends on how active I am (I listen to my body); I eat mod. healthy fat like coconut oil (raw), avocado oil (raw), etc.; no grains and no starch unless is tiny amounts maybe once or twice a week and even then I bloat and get gasey so in general I stay away since I want to feel great, not like [censored]ze. I eat all organic and local foods from local farmers I can literally walk up and meet and spend a day on their farm. I eat paleo basically. I have done raw vegan, vegan, and vegetarian for several years each and could not do so sustainably which I believe to be due to my constraints. Hence my seeking advice. Note I want to maintain these macros I feel best on and have been living on for years. I have no problem maintaing a lean toned figure and if I'm aiming to lose weight I can. Currently I am happy wiht my 144lb 6ft ~18% body fat figure but ideally want to lose some fat on my legs so I may cut my fat back a bit and carbs as well and adjust my workout regime. I do PIIT pilates, hike, vinyasa yoga and light jog. I f'in' hate running so I do high intensity pilates and vinyasa yoga in a heated roomed instead if I'm not feeling jogging is 'cutting it' lol. On average I am active 4 hours a day, some days I do all day field work hiking and collecting samples. Depends. Some days I sit on my butt. So I adjust my calories based on how hungry i feel. I eat between 1700-3k calories a day. Never a prob. maintain my weight and measurements so I'll assume listening to my body is working since calorie intake is always changing for every person based on lifestyle, muscle mass, etc. as I'm sure all of you know. Lifestyle constraints: I have 2 hours a week to cook (I work 80 hour a week, run a household and have a partner. No I cannot manifest more time--I prep my protein and/or pop a meal of veggies and protein in the oven and shower. That's my life.) I have 200-300 a month to spend on food. Ideally I would like to cut about $50 off my food bill a month which I think (and again based on what I heard from my vegan friends with no constraints, that would be easy to do). However considering most protein sources for vegans are soy, gluten based, higher in carbs, may have starches or be grains, I'm not sure what I can eat given I don't have much time to cook at all. After grad school I think I'll have more time. I mean I would hope so. But as of now that's just not going to happen and is not up for debate. Any advice would be nice. Thanks. | Advice re: adolescent's diet My son is 12 and an intelligent boy with autism Asperger's syndrome. He's a lacto-vegetarian by his choice. He's struggled with gastritis all fall, after taking ibuprophen for a broken bone and relapsed a few weeks ago after taking some antibiotics for a day or two (had to quit b/c of vomiting and nausea). His diet is very limited and it is totally counter to what is recommended for chronic gastritis (high fruits/veggies, low fat, low sugar) -- he literally only eats hummus, chips, crackers, peanut butter, soynut butter and some cereal (Cheerios, Life), OJ, milk, apple juice, granola bars. When he got gastritis he stopped being able to eat powerbars w/soy protein. I need some advice about how bad this diet is for a 5'9" 170 lb 12 yr old -- right now he's only eating crackers and cereal b/c he's nauseated all the time. I'm at my wit's end and have come to this forum for help. Help! Post Date: 01/02/12, Replies: 3 | ||

| Anybody know the long-term effects of MSG? Does anybody know the long-term health effects of everyday consumption of MSG on the human body? Here is my situation: I have been living in Taiwan, and the more I look, the more I realize MSG is tossed into nearly everything. I even saw a tv commercial for msg yesterday. I am currently living in a buddhist temple that cooks strict vegetarian meals, but the cook insists on putting msg into every dish. I have tried asking her not to put it in, but she insists that she has to because people will complain if they don't taste it. My question is whether or not I should cause a huge stink about it, and hope they will change their ways, or is it ok for me to eat it 2X a day for the next 3 months? (I am leaving after that). Or should I refuse to eat with them and cook my own food if they still refuse to stop putting msg in everything? Thanks! Post Date: 05/19/09, Replies: 5 | ||
| Anyone frm BOULDER who cured ills wth raw? I'm 70 percent raw (working on that) and have been assigned to write an article for a Boulder publication on raw fooding. I desperately need to hear from raw foodists who cured a medical condition after going raw. Must live in Boulder, of course. I do not live in Boulder and I don't know any other way to find raw Boulderites than to post here. Please contact me privately at: [email protected] I will not be checking the forum for replies because I don't mean this to be a forum discussion; I'm hoping a Boulderite will be interested in being quoted in my article. She’s not even been to the Midwest.” . The Health Department says they can not confirm this is, in fact, CJD. 13News has learned the only way to definitively confirm it is to conduct a biopsy after death. . http://hamptonroads.com/2008/04/state-investigating-possible-case-rare-disease-portsmouth . One possibility is a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, known as vCJD, a rare degenerative brain disorder that has been linked to consumption of contaminated beef. The disease is not spread through casual contact from person to person. There are also other forms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, known as CJD, that are unrelated to beef consumption. State officials are looking into those as well. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease strikes about 200 people a year in the United States. The most common forms of the disease have no known cause or are linked to a genetic mutation. Fewer than 1 percent of cases are linked to medical procedures. To date, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recorded three cases in the United States of the variant that has been linked to mad cow disease. .................................................. | B12 - a new potential source discovered This is mainly of theoretical interest presently: One of the most widespread microorganisms in the world has been found to produce vitamin B12. It does it to such an extent that it is believed to be the provider of B12 to innumerable numbers of marine organisms all over the world that need it. In my blog posting "A new B12 source is discovered – the missing link for vegans?" I am discussing the possibility that this might potentically be a B12 source for vegetarians. | B12 Injections in GTA I know local pharmacies throughout the GTA carry cyanocobalamin. But I'm looking for either hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin injections that could be purchased in order to do intramuscular injections. I know naturopaths can administer them. Does anyone know of any store/website or natural health clinic here in Ontario/around the GTA that gives the right form of B12 to its clients in injection form? Post Date: 10/18/14, Replies: 0 | ||
| B12 Levels and Antibiotics I have been given Penicillin antibiotics to take 4 times a day for 10 days for a bacteria found in my urine test, but I also have a B12 blood test next week on Tuesday and I'm a little bit worried that the antibiotics will effect my B12 levels. Does anyone know a way to maintain b12 levels while taking antibiotics ? I'm taking a B12 oral spray and a b12 complex capsule and I'm drinking coconut milk with fortified b12 everyday, also I'm using prebiotics 2 hours after taking the antibiotics. Also does anyone know what a good b12 level is ? I got a b12 blood test in Thailand in July this year and it was 341. Post Date: 10/08/16, Replies: 1 | ||

| Binge Eating Hi! As the title suggests, I've been developing that problem for almost 8 months now after I've become vegetarian or semi vegan now. I wonder why that happened since I never had any eating problems before. I can still maintain my weight and health by following raw foodism this far, but I can go back to vegetarianism because of binging. Does anyone have tips to break free from this? Thanks in advance. | Blood sugar out of control? Hi, I am a 28 year old male and have been vegan for around 9 months now. At first, I felt incredible and was overloaded with energy. I was happy and everything was great. Now everything is wrong. I screwed up and didn't eat any fats for the first 3 months and this caused gallbladder sludge and gallstones. I feel this is what happened because I had no problems at all until about 3 months after I went vegan. So anytime I eat fat now I can't breath, my back hurts, I get sick, and feel lethargic. But I know I need fats to absorb the nutrients I need. I will say that I haven't tried chia seeds. Also, my blood sugar seems to be haywire. For the longest time I was eating about 6 bananas for breakfast and sometimes about an hour later I would eat a few potatoes, then I would go for a walk. During my walk I always feel exhausted, lethargic, weak, foggy headed and so on. There was even a few times my arms would go numb and I felt like passing out. I figured it was blood sugar issues so in the past couple of days I have cut way back on fruit. This morning I fixed some vegan pancakes made with a few dates, oats, a couple of bananas, and some almond milk and raw unsweetened cocao powder. I also had a few almonds. I felt okay for a while, not great but better. Then I went for my walk again and about half-way through sure enough it seemed like my blood sugar went crazy again and I felt dizzy and lethargic. It my have been the nuts affecting my gallbladder though. It seems like no matter what I do I feel like I am halfway dead and it is quite terrifying and I feel quite anxious a lot of the time, even with daily meditation. I eat enough calories, I make green smoothies(although I haven't determined how they made me feel yet), I eat other veggies and starches, I take vitamins, and I am pretty sure I am getting enough nutrients. So what is happening? I can't go on feeling like this anymore. I don't want to go back to eating meat and couldn't anyways with my gallbladder problems now. I feel like it might be a combination of gallbladder issues and maybe hypoglycemia, but I could be wrong. I am terrified right now and would really like some help/advice, thanks! | Blood Test - not been allowed to have one! Hi Guys, I went to the doctors today to schedule a blood test testing the CBC (Complete Blood Count) Cmp Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) Ferritin (Iron assess) Folic Acid, Lipid Profile (Total Cholesterol LdL, HDL, Triglycerides) MMA (Methylmalonic Acid) Vit B12 Vit D I read on many sites (such as happycow.net) that it's really important to be tested on all of these things. However, the GP would not want to do a blood test on me! She said I would only be allowed to do a standard CBC, and then, if something was wrong, do other tests. I was astonished. I said, that all of these things are really important, and having been a vegetarian for 3 years and a vegan for 1 they should really be testing my B12 also. At the end the GP told me that she would only do a CBC, B12 and Folic Acid, (it truly felt as if I had to barter!) and if something was wrong i would have to go back there and do more tests. This is so obtuse, because while they are trying to save money doing less services as possible, they are spending more time and money, because people always come back to do more tests; also It feels like they are waiting until people get sick to cure them, rather then prevent the sickness! I remarked that my last test I did was over ten years ago, and that I should really have it done properly; but the Doctor was unmovable. I offered to pay extra to have everything done at my expenses but they said that they would not charge me for a blood test. I ended up leaving the place with no appointment because it's such a waste of time. This is frustrating because as a tax payer I am paying for a service, but I'm not getting the service in return! I'm very concerned, since I'm also planning to start a family in the coming years and I want to make sure I can sustain a pregnancy on my current diet (I don't take any supplements) or whether I should add supplements to my diet right away. Just the topping on the cake, the GP offered to take my blood pressure, as they do to make it look like they've done something! (yeah, I figured I would be up to the sky I was so angry). While she was taking the blood test she said: "So, your vegan, does that mean that you don't eat fish?" I was, like... you are a doctor and you don't know what vegan means?! Anyway I patiently explain that I don't consume any animal products and she replied "What? So you just eat pulses?!" Like I was so weird? I wanted to say, you are the weird one, eating flesh of animals and mammary secretions that are supposed to be for calves! Have you had a similar experience? Do you have any suggestions? I'm considering going to a private doctor, but I have no idea how much this is going to cost me! Thank you for your help, any suggestion is appreciated! Post Date: 01/12/13, Replies: 3 | ||
| Books for a young vegetarian? Hi there... I just found this site and am hoping you all can help me! My daughter recently decided she wanted to be a vegetarian. She has been doing great (i am a long time veg so she's not a stranger). I was wondering if anyone could recommend some books bout the importance of nutrition and making smart choices. She is 10 years old, so they would need to be geared towards the 'tween set. I just want to make sure she understands that yes, french fries may be vegetarian, but they are still "sometimes" food and that her body needs higher quality food to grow strong and healthy. Obviously, I will guide her... But she is an avid reader and fascinated with health, so figured this would be a good way to open up the dialogue between us. In any case, do books like this exist? Or do I need to start writing one? Lol!!! Thank you kindly for any suggestions. Post Date: 11/20/14, Replies: 4 | ||
