| Blood Test - not been allowed to have one! Hi Guys, I went to the doctors today to schedule a blood test testing the CBC (Complete Blood Count) Cmp Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) Ferritin (Iron assess) Folic Acid, Lipid Profile (Total Cholesterol LdL, HDL, Triglycerides) MMA (Methylmalonic Acid) Vit B12 Vit D I read on many sites (such as happycow.net) that it's really important to be tested on all of these things. However, the GP would not want to do a blood test on me! She said I would only be allowed to do a standard CBC, and then, if something was wrong, do other tests. I was astonished. I said, that all of these things are really important, and having been a vegetarian for 3 years and a vegan for 1 they should really be testing my B12 also. At the end the GP told me that she would only do a CBC, B12 and Folic Acid, (it truly felt as if I had to barter!) and if something was wrong i would have to go back there and do more tests. This is so obtuse, because while they are trying to save money doing less services as possible, they are spending more time and money, because people always come back to do more tests; also It feels like they are waiting until people get sick to cure them, rather then prevent the sickness! I remarked that my last test I did was over ten years ago, and that I should really have it done properly; but the Doctor was unmovable. I offered to pay extra to have everything done at my expenses but they said that they would not charge me for a blood test. I ended up leaving the place with no appointment because it's such a waste of time. This is frustrating because as a tax payer I am paying for a service, but I'm not getting the service in return! I'm very concerned, since I'm also planning to start a family in the coming years and I want to make sure I can sustain a pregnancy on my current diet (I don't take any supplements) or whether I should add supplements to my diet right away. Just the topping on the cake, the GP offered to take my blood pressure, as they do to make it look like they've done something! (yeah, I figured I would be up to the sky I was so angry). While she was taking the blood test she said: "So, your vegan, does that mean that you don't eat fish?" I was, like... you are a doctor and you don't know what vegan means?! Anyway I patiently explain that I don't consume any animal products and she replied "What? So you just eat pulses?!" Like I was so weird? I wanted to say, you are the weird one, eating flesh of animals and mammary secretions that are supposed to be for calves! Have you had a similar experience? Do you have any suggestions? I'm considering going to a private doctor, but I have no idea how much this is going to cost me! Thank you for your help, any suggestion is appreciated! Post Date: 01/12/13, Replies: 3 | ||
| Rawfoodist hair I started my vegan life with a help of the following site: veganmarket.wordpress.com/ (by the way, have you heard about it? To me, it's a good startup - although the assortment is quite low - I've tried tofu and stevia there - quite decent, I'd like to say) So, back to the subject: not quite a lot time passed when I moved on to rawfoodism - everything was ok - until I started to loose my beautiful hair. I noticed that todays' morning - was extremely surprised - read some forums and found out that it is a usual practice - please, recommend me what to do? THANK YOU! | Supplement help needed, desperately Hey, even though my big hero Gary Yourofsky says he doesn't (need/)take any supplements as a vegan, I've decided to take one just to be sure. The problem is that I can't find any supplements meeting my criteria, which is: 1) it contains the methylcobalamin b12 form (because that's supposed to be used more effectively than other forms, also it's natural and non-toxic), 2) that the daily needs (for all 'nutrients') are met, 3) that it's vegan, obviously, 4) that it contains other important vitamins and/or minerals, such as d-vitamin, and 5) that it doesn't cost wayyy too much (and I really want the cheapest one possible). Thanks in advance! Post Date: 06/10/15, Replies: 3 | ||
| Headaches and Restlessness Ive been vegan for a really long time now and I recently have been suffering from headaches, constipation and insomnia. Also my whole right side of my body is swollen too and my mom says its a genetic thing but, I only started noticing it. I went to the emergency room to get a CT scan and I don't have anything wrong in my head atm. My cats have worms and ive been thinking that's what it is but, Ive been doing tons of research in hopes of curing this. I am currently on a parasitic cleanse to see if that fixes it. Also I take vitamin B12, C, Iron and a probiotic regularly. I don't eat many greens either. If anyone knows what is wrong with me please help. Post Date: 07/12/15, Replies: 3 | ||

| Crazy New Vegan Symptoms? Hi! I went vegan a week ago at the ripe old age of 43, and all of the sudden my body is doing some drastically different things....strange energy levels, I'm in the bathroom all the time, weight redistributing itself on my body, super vivid dreams, strange cravings and a huge decrease in appetite, hot and cold flashes....did you have any strange symptoms at first? How long did they last? Thanks for making a new vegan feel better! Post Date: 12/24/15, Replies: 3 | ||
| Blood sugar out of control? Hi, I am a 28 year old male and have been vegan for around 9 months now. At first, I felt incredible and was overloaded with energy. I was happy and everything was great. Now everything is wrong. I screwed up and didn't eat any fats for the first 3 months and this caused gallbladder sludge and gallstones. I feel this is what happened because I had no problems at all until about 3 months after I went vegan. So anytime I eat fat now I can't breath, my back hurts, I get sick, and feel lethargic. But I know I need fats to absorb the nutrients I need. I will say that I haven't tried chia seeds. Also, my blood sugar seems to be haywire. For the longest time I was eating about 6 bananas for breakfast and sometimes about an hour later I would eat a few potatoes, then I would go for a walk. During my walk I always feel exhausted, lethargic, weak, foggy headed and so on. There was even a few times my arms would go numb and I felt like passing out. I figured it was blood sugar issues so in the past couple of days I have cut way back on fruit. This morning I fixed some vegan pancakes made with a few dates, oats, a couple of bananas, and some almond milk and raw unsweetened cocao powder. I also had a few almonds. I felt okay for a while, not great but better. Then I went for my walk again and about half-way through sure enough it seemed like my blood sugar went crazy again and I felt dizzy and lethargic. It my have been the nuts affecting my gallbladder though. It seems like no matter what I do I feel like I am halfway dead and it is quite terrifying and I feel quite anxious a lot of the time, even with daily meditation. I eat enough calories, I make green smoothies(although I haven't determined how they made me feel yet), I eat other veggies and starches, I take vitamins, and I am pretty sure I am getting enough nutrients. So what is happening? I can't go on feeling like this anymore. I don't want to go back to eating meat and couldn't anyways with my gallbladder problems now. I feel like it might be a combination of gallbladder issues and maybe hypoglycemia, but I could be wrong. I am terrified right now and would really like some help/advice, thanks! | Just a note... I know that I (and lots of other happycow members) have provided some advice to other members on health and nutrition. I just wanted to make sure everyone knows the importance that this information is solely for educational purposes and is in no way to replace an actual medical visit. This website has a wealth of excellent information from a lot of great minds but please remember if you have any medical concerns or needs please see your medical doctor or healthcare provider. | Can anyone help? I am sorry if anyone takes offense to this, but i am in highschool right now and i am in forensics, which deals with performance, and i am in the event of oratory to persaude people to become vegan. | Aretha - very ill -believed to have CJD - Important note - this story is not about the other Aretha - the fur lover - http://www.furisdead.com/feat_worst_dressed_winner.asp .................................................. Does anyone in the US still eat beef? .................................................. http://www.wvec.com/news/portsmouth/stories/wvec_local_040708_mad_cow_disease.3fd7e5c7.html# Excerpt's - . “Aretha has always lived in Virginia,” said Mrs. Vincent. “She has not traveled overseas. She’s not even been to the Midwest.” . The Health Department says they can not confirm this is, in fact, CJD. 13News has learned the only way to definitively confirm it is to conduct a biopsy after death. . http://hamptonroads.com/2008/04/state-investigating-possible-case-rare-disease-portsmouth . One possibility is a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, known as vCJD, a rare degenerative brain disorder that has been linked to consumption of contaminated beef. The disease is not spread through casual contact from person to person. There are also other forms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, known as CJD, that are unrelated to beef consumption. State officials are looking into those as well. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease strikes about 200 people a year in the United States. The most common forms of the disease have no known cause or are linked to a genetic mutation. Fewer than 1 percent of cases are linked to medical procedures. To date, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recorded three cases in the United States of the variant that has been linked to mad cow disease. .................................................. | Medical Maggot and Leech Therapy Medical Maggot and Leech Therapy -- Invasion of the Eco-Friendly Body Suckers I've been beginning to wonder if I'm the last person on the planet to catch up on medical advances that have apparently been mainstream for quite a while now. Did you know that medical practitioners has been using maggots (baby fly larvae) and leeches (creepy crawly relatives to earthworms) to treat wounds ever since 1000 B.C.? More surprisingly, both critters are being used in medical facilities near you to treat a wide range of ailments, proving as is often the case that Mother Nature seems to always do things just a little bit better than complicated medical technology. www.greenwala.com/profiles/3446-Kieran-K/blog/2033-Medical-Maggot-and-Leech-Therapy-Invasion-of-the-Eco-Friendly-Body-Suckers Please read the article, check out the videos and then share your perspective on whether you could submit yourself to this type of treatment or not. | raw food/diet book Hi - I am a successful literary agent and a well known cookbook publisher has asked me to find one or more authors for a book on raw food and dieting. I need a raw food "chef" and a nutritionist, MD, NC, (and one with the right credentials or one person who is both) who understands the science of raw foods. Anyone interested in talking? | Soy and hypothyroidism In case anyone has personal experience; how much soy can you safely consume per day when you have hypothyroidism? The research seems to be divided on this topic and it's really hard to estimate how much soy certain products contain... On a related note, what is a similarly nutritious/flexible and easily accessible soy alternative? Thanks. Post Date: 11/08/11, Replies: 2 | ||

| NEW Course for a Healthy Heart - T. Colin T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and eCornell partner with top Ivy League faculty to offer new online course [ITHACA, NY] The T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, in partnership with eCornell, is pleased to announce the release of a new online course, “Nutrition for a Healthy Heart.” The new course features lectures from Cornell University faculty, the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, as well as bestselling authors and researchers. “Most people know that heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the U.S. and other Western countries,” says Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus at Cornell University. “And most people know, more or less, that diet is a factor in causing heart disease, but only a few really know how profound is this effect or which foods might be problematic. It’s time to highlight scientific evidence that demonstrates how heart disease can be prevented and, even more dramatically, how people can be treated to reverse this disease.” The two-week course is designed to be readily accessible to the public without scientific or medical training, while offering new research for a variety of health professionals. Topics range from contemporary heart disease research and medical practices to stocking a kitchen with heart-healthy foods. Like the Center’s best-selling Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition, the heart course plans to offer continuing education credits for a variety of health disciplines. eCornell’s unique approach to online learning combines cutting-edge technologies with Ivy League thought leadership in an engaging, collaborative online learning environment. eCornell’s online courses are self-paced, instructor-facilitated, and focus on real-world objectives. eCornell has delivered online courses to more than 50,000 students in more than 200 countries. “Collaborating with the Center for Nutrition Studies furthers our commitment to maximizing the opportunity for anyone, anywhere to receive impactful content directly from Cornell University,” says Chad Oliveiri, eCornell’s Vice President of Content and Partnerships. “It’s not at all a stretch to say the content we’re building with the Center is truly life-changing.” The T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, formerly known as the T. Colin Campbell Foundation, is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization based in Ithaca, NY. Their mission is to promote optimal nutrition through science-based education, advocacy, and research. | Silent Retreat Venue Would anyone have any idea where I could find a QUIET venue to hold a 21 day silent meditation retreat in Europe. We hope to hold the retreat in mid to late June or early July and it needs to be more on the low budget end of the price scale. We would need beds for 12 people (preferably single rooms), a meditation hall and we would do all our own vegetarian cooking. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. | How crazy is this?! OK, bit of background. I am coeliac and also suffer from Crohn's disease (although currently this is in remission) and recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I suffer a lot with pain and fatigue. I have had to gradually transition to vegetarianism because my body doesn't like big diet changes. I was warned not to do it by my GP because I am prone to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly B12. My diet now consists of lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts, gluten free grains, some beans and lentils (the ones my gut will tolerate) tofu, seaweed, unsweetened almond or coconut milk, occasional Quorn pieces, organic eggs, cheese, yoghurt, and I do occasionally eat clams or mussels (bivalves) because of the B12 issue. And of course, the odd bit of treat food. But I find I don't crave sugar as much as I used to. My GP thought I would not thrive on this and I would come to him sick in no time. But my last lot of blood tests? First time in 5 years I don't need any B12 shots, despite reduced dairy intake my calcium is better than it's ever been, and potassium is normal instead of on the edge. I have had anaemia every winter for 5 years, and this year? Iron levels are fine. And only one cold this winter compared to my usual three or four by now. Just goes to show hey.....
