Increasing Iron and Iron Absorption? I'm a Vegan who's looking to change my diet to include more iron-rich and iron-absorbing enhancer foods in daily meals, as I get anemic often. Any tips? Post Date: 11/06/07, Replies: 9
gaining weight being vegetarian Hope you don't mind, but will copy a post I sent to my new weight loss group - sorry it's LONG: Hope there are enough fellow vegetarians/vegans to answer this. I became vegan about 8 months ago. Within 3 months, I had gained 10 lbs. and was hypothyroid (was already on meds. and had been stable for years). Yes, I relied heavily on soy for my protein. So then I switched to vegetarian so I could use dairy/eggs for my protein, as I am not such a fan of beans/legumes that I ate enough daily to suffice. In 5 months I gained another 10 pounds! I have used Loseit for a week (love it, BTW). Was under my daily calories 5 out of 7 days and have lost NOTHING. The My Nutrition section has shown that I eat a lot of (healthy) fats and (healthy) carbs. It is VERY hard to get enough protein. My husband does not share my views so, after making his meal I usually don't have time to do a decent one for me, too. I feel horrible to do so, but I am thinking of trying my old, lean meat-eating diet for a week to see if it makes a difference. I only needed to lose 5 lbs. before becoming vegan. I am 55, do take bioidentical hormones (although they may need slight adjusting), thyroid meds, and am fairly active as I have horses and dogs. Has anyone else gained weight being vegetarian? Raising Vegan Children? Hello, I am wondering if anyone has children and are raising them strictly vegan? What are some of the major challenges you have encountered, and what advice can you offer to other parents who would like to raise their children vegan? Thank you - Chia. Questionnaire about Vegetarianism. Hello, I'm Zoe, and I currently am in high school. I take food technology (Home Economics) as a subject, and as part of our final study we have to look at certain themes, such as special diets. I chose to pose the question with mine "Do Vegetarians get enough Protein?" Now I want to get a wide range of data, and its only ten quick quetsions. If you are interested, please leave a message on here, and a way I can contact you, and I'll happily send you the ten questions. Any help will be appreciated. Zoe Post Date: 07/24/11, Replies: 8

MY FAMILY IS BECOMING VEGAN HELLO! I am a mother to two beautiful children, a boy six months old and a little girl two years old. I am also a wife to a wonderful man that I love very much. We've recently decided to become Vegan and need help beginning. It is very important that we do this correctly for the health of our children. I don't want to accidently malnourish them. Our daughter is unique in the way that she eats everything. Kale, Chard, Tofu, Edamame and nearly every fruit available. There isn't much she honestly dislikes. I don't see it being too difficult of a transistion for her. As for my husband, maybe a bit more difficult. I know I'll miss fish the most. Along with cheeses. I need a shopping list. I shop one month at a time except for fresh veggies. Can anyone Help? Post Date: 02/17/13, Replies: 8
Menstruation issues since going vegan I will be vegan for a month on Friday and for the most part I feel great. However during my last period and during the time of ovulation I got really weak dizzy and light headed. I also got a migraine and I never get those. I am wondering if it was low iron and if so what is a good source of vegan iron. Post Date: 04/11/16, Replies: 8
Trying to lose 10 pounds! I've been a vegan for 8 years, granted I'm only 21 and I'm not overweight. I've been trying to lose 10 pounds, from 130 to 120. It's so hard to seek advice on the issue because all the online sources simply say, "don't eat meat, don't eat dairy, don't eat wheat, don't eat processed foods" easy, I do that. I have even been avoiding beans for calories sake. I have a vegetable smoothie for breakfast, a salad for lunch, edamame / veggie burgers for dinner and fruit for snacks. How do I lose weight?? Vegan diet and hair health? Hi, I was a non-vegetarian until a few months back. After lots of thinking I decided to be a vegetarian and is one for last three- four months. I feel very happy about myself, but I have started to lose hair. I am worried if it has something to do with my change in diet? I have heard that vegetables are healthier for hair, but still want to confirm it. My friends have suggested me to visit any good hair treatment clinic like Chtc.ca in Toronto and I will but would like some advice before that. Post Date: 11/03/15, Replies: 8
Consumption Of Fruit Hi everyone, I am a newbie to the vegan lifestyle. I am borderline diabetic, and I was wondering if the increase of fruit in my diet since transitioning to the vegan lifestyle will have a negative impact on my diabetes, due to the fact that fruit has natural sugars versus processed sugars. Any help with this is always appreciated and thanks in advance for replies. Post Date: 11/03/15, Replies: 8
What should I always keep in stock? Hi! I really want to become [fully] vegetarian (and vegan one day) and it would really help if you could give me some tips. Especially like: what should I always have in my pantry/fridge? thank you! Post Date: 12/08/15, Replies: 8
Food Choice Anxiety Hi everyone- over the past 8-10 I was living in SE Asia; while there I naturally eliminated most meat and dairy from my diet. I moved on to Australia and decided to keep up with most of my new food choices of no meat or dairy. I did so not so much mostly just to see how a change of diet would make me feel. I am a believe now after much research that a plant based diet is the way to live ( I knew that before but it's hard to come by sometimes). All of that being said, with the choice to go vegan not being a moral one or a strict diet I started but have rather started to adopt, I have very anxious over a lot of the food choices I start to make. At this point I eat a 90-95% percent vegan diet. I may eat a piece of fish every other week or a cookie/ slice of cake here of there. I am slowly tasting or eating foods that I haven't had in a long time to see how they taste to me now or make me feel. When I do this I feel like I'm "cheating". I feel like I have to hide if I want to eat a vegetarian pizza or a slice of pizza with meat for all that matters. I didn't wake up and decide to become vegan one day, let alone do while living in a foreign country across the world! I don't want to have a bad relationship with the food I want to or choose not to eat. I surely can't be the first person that has experienced this? It's not even so much "cravings", as I know there are great vegan subs for most foods, it's more about what I'm allowing myself to eat... and maybe why?? I'm just looking for some encouragement or advice. Thanks! Post Date: 01/30/16, Replies: 8
Cholesterol lowering questions Hi all, I am new to this forum and would like some advice or personal experiences regarding your cholesterol levels. I have been vegan for just about three months, and my last cholesterol was still a bit high (215). I do have a family disposition to genetically high cholesterol, but I asked my primary care provider for another three months on a vegan diet before re-testing. I would rather not go on statins if I don't have to. So my question for the forum is for those who have had cholesterol issues: does the vegan diet actually lower your cholesterol? I am a REALLY good cook, I have tackled the creativity you can have while making wonderful vegan meals: but is there some other whole-food strategies I can add to my diet that might help? About me:I get moderate exercise (I ride my bike/walk) every day weather permitting, as don't own a car. So I am in pretty good physical shape. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Advice on going vegan Hi all! So I have found that in approaching this subject that many vegans get offended by my contraints and reasons why I am happy being an omnivore, a well educated omnivore with two degrees: one in Environmental Studies and the other in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability and working towards a master's in forestry. So if you have no kind input please do not respond. THank you. I have a few vegan friends and have asked them the same advice I am asking you and they really didn't have an answer because they don't have dietary restrictions for health reasons, nor do they have time restrictions. Mind you nothing in my life is going to change in terms of time restrictions and financial restrictions. It's just how my life is at the moment and will be likely for the next 4 years. That being said, please just provide me adivce based on my contraints because those will not change. I'm sorry to sound 'uppity' but I've gotten a lot of mean responses saying i need to change my life and schedule, which is obviously not going to happen. I'm merely seeking a way to save money on food a few days a week, and maintain my macros which make me feel best and most energetic and happy. I have heard that veganism is very cost effective. That being said, can I go vegan for 3 days a week maintaining the following macros based on the following dietary constraints: I am allergic to soy, dairy, gluten, and highly sensitive to starches, grains, any and all processed foods. I eat raw veggies, fruits, fish, eggs, chicken, beef (all lean), seeds, nuts. THe macros I maintain are: ~80-120 grams of protein a day sometimes more, I am moderate to very active in my lifestyle; 150 or less carbs but most of my carbs are from veggies--too much fruit and sugar in general makes my sleep and anxiety so bad. I'm very sensitive to sugar. I eat ~35-40 grams fiber any more I bloat, any less than 25 grams I feel 'backed up'; low sodium (sensitive to sodium I retain water like you wouldn't believe even drinking over a gallon a day); I drink approx. a gallon of water a day, give or take, depends on how active I am (I listen to my body); I eat mod. healthy fat like coconut oil (raw), avocado oil (raw), etc.; no grains and no starch unless is tiny amounts maybe once or twice a week and even then I bloat and get gasey so in general I stay away since I want to feel great, not like [censored]ze. I eat all organic and local foods from local farmers I can literally walk up and meet and spend a day on their farm. I eat paleo basically. I have done raw vegan, vegan, and vegetarian for several years each and could not do so sustainably which I believe to be due to my constraints. Hence my seeking advice. Note I want to maintain these macros I feel best on and have been living on for years. I have no problem maintaing a lean toned figure and if I'm aiming to lose weight I can. Currently I am happy wiht my 144lb 6ft ~18% body fat figure but ideally want to lose some fat on my legs so I may cut my fat back a bit and carbs as well and adjust my workout regime. I do PIIT pilates, hike, vinyasa yoga and light jog. I f'in' hate running so I do high intensity pilates and vinyasa yoga in a heated roomed instead if I'm not feeling jogging is 'cutting it' lol. On average I am active 4 hours a day, some days I do all day field work hiking and collecting samples. Depends. Some days I sit on my butt. So I adjust my calories based on how hungry i feel. I eat between 1700-3k calories a day. Never a prob. maintain my weight and measurements so I'll assume listening to my body is working since calorie intake is always changing for every person based on lifestyle, muscle mass, etc. as I'm sure all of you know. Lifestyle constraints: I have 2 hours a week to cook (I work 80 hour a week, run a household and have a partner. No I cannot manifest more time--I prep my protein and/or pop a meal of veggies and protein in the oven and shower. That's my life.) I have 200-300 a month to spend on food. Ideally I would like to cut about $50 off my food bill a month which I think (and again based on what I heard from my vegan friends with no constraints, that would be easy to do). However considering most protein sources for vegans are soy, gluten based, higher in carbs, may have starches or be grains, I'm not sure what I can eat given I don't have much time to cook at all. After grad school I think I'll have more time. I mean I would hope so. But as of now that's just not going to happen and is not up for debate. Any advice would be nice. Thanks. Seeking genuine wheatgrass opinions Hi there! I have been growing and drinking wheatgrass juice pretty much every day for over a year now. My problem is that I really don't know if it helps me out or not. Although I do have a friend who says wheatgrass nursed him back to health after being deathly sick, I am a healthy, fit vegan who is wondering if wheatgrass does wonders for me or not. There are those who claim wheatgrass juice is magic, and there are others who claim it doesn't really do anything. If you have any true stories about how you are sure wheatgrass juice helped you, please let me know!!! I feel like I need a little inspiration to keep growing and drinking it. Vegetarian and Blood Sugar Hi everyone. I am new to the site and to vegetarianism. I have been in good health most of my life, but recently my doctor told me I was border line diabetic. I know how terrible this disease can be and it scares me to death. Right now I am own a brown rice diet. This is my 2nd day. I have used this diet occasionally to loose weight and clean my system. I read a book years ago titled: You Are All Sanpanku by George Osaka. It is a macrobiotic approach to general good health, and this diet has always been helpful to me. My question is; do you think this diet will lower by blood sugar levels? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much, Charlie Post Date: 10/20/14, Replies: 7

Reliable source of protein for vegan Hi,recently I have found out that legumes(except peanuts),soy, cereals, and some vegetables are moderate in purines which can cause uric acid so it is unlucky for vegans to have them in their diets every time. Those foods that are low in purines and high in protein are nuts, seeds and hempmilk only.Am I going to eat or drink only these foods to get protein everyday? Organic vs Conventional Farming Howdy everyone, I am curious to hear some opinions on the pros and cons of organic farming compared to conventional farming. During the summer I work/cultivate for an organic farmer on my father’s land. My primary job is to cultivate soybeans, corn and milo fields after they have been planted. This process leads me cultivate the same field up to 3-4 times, depending on the amount of moisture. I feel that driving the tractor over the land that many extra times is harmful to the environment, plus it adds a lot of extra work. Conventional farmers would simply spray their fields once with fertilizer and later harvest the crop, decreasing the amount of fuel used. But, it is my belief that synthetic fertilizer is harmful to the farmers using it and the consumers when we eat it. My boss gets his fertilizer from organic cattle manure, which I think is a better option. I have read some articles stating that organic farm yields are much lower than conventional farms. I’m not sure if that’s true or not. If true, it would be difficult to feed the world’s population if every farm was organic. Any thoughts or comments? Matthew Lee Post Date: 10/28/14, Replies: 7

Raw fruits & veggie allergy. Any advice? I have had Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) since I was 5 or 6 and if I eat any raw fruits or vegetables, an allergic reaction happens causing my throat to hurt and it becomes hard to swallow. It's not life threatening but it is uncomfortable enough to not want to eat any raw fruits or veggies. Because of this allergy, my diet has been pretty bad since it's just easier to eat fast food or anything else instead of finding ways to eat healthy. I stay pretty active so I'm not overweight and don't have any serious health problems but I know if I continue eating this way I will eventually so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I can do to eat around this allergy. If the fruits and vegetables are cooked I can eat them. The allergy is caused by a certain protein in the fruit or vegetable but is easily destroyed by heat, thus when cooked, it is fine. I'd honestly like to become vegan because of the health benefits but I'm afraid my allergy will make this very difficult. If anyone has any recipes they could recommend or just tips in general about what to do, it would be much appreciated. Post Date: 03/05/15, Replies: 7
Gaining weight on a vegan diet I've been a vegan for 10 months now. The first month I lost 2 or 3 kg without working out at all, but after that I started gaining weight and I don't know why. I eat low fat and as many vegetables as possible, I do eat quite a lot of rice though, I'm not sure if that would be the problem? Has anyone had similar problems? Post Date: 01/05/17, Replies: 7

Flatulence This topic is a little bit embarrassing. I started my vegan diet 1 1/2 year ago with a hydro-colon-therapy. And I have had no problems with digestions. A few weeks ago I recognized a lot of flatulence with bad smelling gas. Can anybody give me hints how to avoid this? Post Date: 10/21/14, Replies: 6
How Do I Reduce Fiber without Reducing Pro I've been vegetarian for almost 9 months now, and have recently started getting cramped and bloated, with occasional constipation and rough stools. I believe this is because I'm getting too much fiber, but I'm having trouble finding ways to lower my fiber intake and still meet protein requirements. I'm male and weigh 193lbs, so I generally aim for 70g a day. Generally, I eat a lot of legumes, nuts, and whole grains, tons of veggies, and a good amount of eggs and dairy. I realize tofu is low in fiber, but I only rarely eat soy because my family has a history thyroid problems I generally don't eat much seitan, because I'm concerned with high intakes of gluten causing long term harm I know I could cut out some whole grains and eat simple grains and that would reduce some of my fiber, but also protein and other nutrients. I could eat more eggs and dairy, but that's not healthy either. So I'm still left with nuts and legumes being a primary protein source, both being really high in fiber. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Post Date: 10/08/14, Replies: 6
