rash because of vegetarianism??? hi! a friend of mine changed for being vegetarian some years ago. after being that for a while he broke out in a rash. red spots started to cover his body everywhere! first he thought he was alergic to his new bought cats, but when he didn`t know what to do anymore, he tried to eat meat again-and the rash disappeared for good. desperately wanting to be vegetarian he tried again now.And again the rash shoed up on his arms! what could the reason be? is there something missing in his diet? unfortunately he doesn`t trust doctors and doesn`t want to take bloodsamples so it is hard to check. but does anybody know what to do??? thanks so much for help! Vegetarian diet not working for me? Hi all I have experimented with the vegetarian diet for a few months now. I am 17 years old and I wanted to do it for the "ethical" reason. Sadly I can clearly notice that I clearly do not "thrive" on this at all diet. I have gained weight on the vegetarian diet (normal range) but I do not feel good at all on it. My energy levels are just the same or even lower than when I was an omni. Most of the time after I eat I don't feel fully satiated, I feel more like 90% satiated and I continue to think about food. I think about food too much and I become irritable sometimes. I have tried adding fish to my diet, and I felt better. But after 3 days of eating fish, I haven't eaten any today and I feel bad again. What could be wrong? I eat a decent variety of food and I also eat eggs and cheese daily. Maybe this diet is not for me? I used to eat a high meat diet before January 2009. I think I'm getting enough protein. I do some weight training and my strength is just the same or even better than before. My iron levels are normal and I also get enough zinc. I added flax seeds for Omega 3, but didn't feel better. So what could be the problem? I'm interested in your opinions, maybe somebody else has/had the same problem? Post Date: 11/13/09, Replies: 3
Medical Maggot and Leech Therapy Medical Maggot and Leech Therapy -- Invasion of the Eco-Friendly Body Suckers I've been beginning to wonder if I'm the last person on the planet to catch up on medical advances that have apparently been mainstream for quite a while now. Did you know that medical practitioners has been using maggots (baby fly larvae) and leeches (creepy crawly relatives to earthworms) to treat wounds ever since 1000 B.C.? More surprisingly, both critters are being used in medical facilities near you to treat a wide range of ailments, proving as is often the case that Mother Nature seems to always do things just a little bit better than complicated medical technology. www.greenwala.com/profiles/3446-Kieran-K/blog/2033-Medical-Maggot-and-Leech-Therapy-Invasion-of-the-Eco-Friendly-Body-Suckers Please read the article, check out the videos and then share your perspective on whether you could submit yourself to this type of treatment or not. Piss Drinking- take care- risky in Canada! Personally I choose to drink pure water, teas, fruit juices & vegetable juices - I am not in favor of drinking my own urine or the urine of cows! Are there any "piss takers" here on HappyCow.net? Do you get "Chinese AUT urges" or "Morarji Desai moments"? http://www.lifepositive.com/Body/traditional-therapies/urine-therapy.asp Excerpt - + According to Xinhua news agency more than three million Chinese drink their own urine believing that it is good for their health. AUT (Auto-Urine Therapy) is an ancient practice as it finds mention in many old texts of India such as Shivambhu Kalpa Vidhi and Damar Tantra. Shivambhu literally means water of Lord Shiva, a Hindu God. Urine therapists often speak of drinking Shivambhu, which means drinking the water of auspiciousness. Former Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai, who lived up to the age of 99, has been the most well known proponent of this therapy. He claimed that India would have been better off if more people used this extremely inexpensive and effective way of treatment. He also attributed to AUT the credit for his longevity. + The US Military recommend against it if you a soldier gets lost in Iraq / Afghanistan - so John McCain & General David Petraeus are also probably "dead against it" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urophagia Excerpt - + It has been suggested that when a person is in desert survival or surrounded by salt water and devoid of drinking water that the person must resort to drinking his/her own urine if it is the only liquid available. As it tends to cause further dehydration due to the salts in it, drinking urine for survival is advised against by the US Army Field Manual,.............. + Amazon.com now has a whole section of their company dedicated to it - http://www.amazon.com/Books-about-Auto-Urine-Therapy-AUT/lm/25346DLFEDEQJ Though if you do decide to buy any of the books please always enter Amazon through the HappyCow link - so that your piss drinking benefits the HappyCows also - http://www.amazon.com/?&tag=happycow-20&camp=211493&creative=376649&linkCode=ez&adid=1G8YKQBJJ3NR282V1GZY& In India drinking cow's urine AKA "taking the piss of the Mother" is almost the norm - http://www.business-india.in/articles.php?file=gomutra.php However be careful, be careful, be careful not to develop mad cow disease - especially if you are a cow urine drinker living in or visiting Canada - http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601082&sid=aKJgvMj2o_LQ&refer=canada + Urine Has Clue That May Lead to Mad Cow Test, Scientists Say + By Stefanie Batcho-Lino Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian scientists have discovered a way to detect mad cow disease in urine, a finding that could lead to the first test for the infection in live animals. Researchers, working with Germany's Research Institute for Animal Health, found that changes in the level of a certain protein in cattle urine signaled the presence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, more commonly known as mad cow disease, Canadian health officials said today in a statement. Presently animals can only be diagnosed with mad cow after death. Canada confirmed its 14th case of mad cow disease on Aug. 15, which sent cattle futures lower. Last year, the U.S. lifted most of its restrictions on Canadian beef and cattle after determining the animals pose ``minimal risk'' for BSE. People can get the disease by eating meat from infected animals. ``We are hopeful that at some point in the future the knowledge gained from this study will make it possible to test live cattle,'' Dr. David Knox, a scientist at the laboratory and lead researcher on the study published in Proteome Science, said in the statement. The scientists analyzed the proteins in urine samples taken from four infected and four healthy cows. They also found that increases in the amount of protein corresponded with progression of mad cow disease in the animals, the statement said. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Quote by Morarji Desai - "One has got to choose between the two evils, also between the lesser of the two evils in the matter of food, and therefore vegetarian food has got to he taken by man in order to sustain human life." http://www.indianpoliticians.com/profile/9/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Post Date: 09/01/09, Replies: 3

Going OFF the Vegetarian Diet In the past years I've come across vegetarians and vegans who sad they "had to get off the vegetarian diet for health reasons." Has any one of you out there heard of this? Personally, I do believe that you have to listen to your body and feel what it wants. Although I advocate a vegetarian diet (for compassion towards the animals, for the sake of the environment, and for health reasons), I do also feel that not everyone can thrive on a vegetarian or vegan diet. But then again, there are MANY who thrive on a veggie diet. What do you guys think? Post Date: 08/03/09, Replies: 26
How do you create personalized menus? Hello, my name is Stefanie Morelli! I've been a vegetarian for about 2 months and chose this lifestyle due to animal torture/violence. However, I still haven't figured out how to make a proper menu for my height & weight. I am 28 years old, 4'8" & weigh 129. Overall I would like to lose 30lbs. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm so grateful for sites like Happy Cow that allow me and others to connect! I'm extremely excited about this lifestyle change and can't wait to meet others who share the same passion! :) Post Date: 07/28/09, Replies: 1
Cancer The Shocking Truth 1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. 2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime. 3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumours. 4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors. 5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system. 6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow,gastro-intestinaltract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. 7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. 8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumour size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumour destruction. 9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications. 10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites. 11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply. CANCER CELLS FEED ON: a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Mänuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts.Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt. b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened Soya milk cancer cells are being starved. c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and Meat also contains live stock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer. d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including beansprouts)and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. 12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic build-up. 13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells. 14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,Essiac,anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells. 15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life. 16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells. To Diet Or To Lifestyle Step one to a new lifestyle. It seems there is always the latest frenzy of diets. Brand name diets come and go as quickly as Octomom is having babies. Then there are the “Extreme” diets. I would say over 95% of diets out there work. I do question ones health on extreme diets that advertiser losing 7-10 pounds per week; when a healthy weight loss should be no more than 2-3 pounds a week. The problem with the word “DIET” is that you can't stay on them forever. One could end up with serious health issues staying on an “Extreme” diet over the recommended length of time. Forget the diets, forget the calorie counting unless you're a professional athlete. How about a lifestyle change. Make a decision, a promise to change the way you're eating, to excersie consistently, to have a new LIFESTYLE on your own health. Start by a decision. Write your goals down on a 3 x 5 card and place it on your bathroom mirror. The goals should be: How much do you want to weigh. When do you want to achieve the new weight. Be realistic on the time issue. You shouldn't be losing anymore than 2-3 pounds a week after your first 2 weeks of your new lifestyle. Take a head to toe photo. Take measurements of arms, chest, waist, hips (if female) and thighs. Get serious, take your lifestyle by the horns. Post Date: 07/04/09, Replies: 0

Homeopathic meds NOT vegan There are 2 major homeopathic brands: Hylands and Boiron. Hylands uses lactose, not derived from beets, rather cows milk. Boiron sometimes uses lactose as well, not always. More alarmingly, I have learned that they derive some meds from things like Duck liver and heart! Beyond grossed out. The nux vomica is one, the oscillococcinum, a main flu remedy, are the ones I heard specifically from serious animal deaths. Gosh. I love herbs and thought homeopathy derived itself from herbs, but how wrong could I be. As a vegans we have to stick to herbs, which is fine. Elderberry and/or Osha Root and such are better anyhow, but it sucks to know the prominence of animal product in other meds... ugh Post Date: 05/27/09, Replies: 0
Anybody know the long-term effects of MSG? Does anybody know the long-term health effects of everyday consumption of MSG on the human body? Here is my situation: I have been living in Taiwan, and the more I look, the more I realize MSG is tossed into nearly everything. I even saw a tv commercial for msg yesterday. I am currently living in a buddhist temple that cooks strict vegetarian meals, but the cook insists on putting msg into every dish. I have tried asking her not to put it in, but she insists that she has to because people will complain if they don't taste it. My question is whether or not I should cause a huge stink about it, and hope they will change their ways, or is it ok for me to eat it 2X a day for the next 3 months? (I am leaving after that). Or should I refuse to eat with them and cook my own food if they still refuse to stop putting msg in everything? Thanks! Post Date: 05/19/09, Replies: 5

Surgery,Chemo And Radiation Only Kills Surgery,Chemo And Radiation Does Not Cure Cancer "The effects of surgery and radiation in the treatment of cancer; a comparison showing that those who receive no treatment at all live just as long, if not longer, than those who are treated" Griffin notes that proponents of Laetrile treatment approach cancer from the belief that it is a "deficiency disease"; therefore, it cannot be "cured," rather prevented and treated. He shows that representatives of the cancer industry claim to have cures. Chapter Ten explores the first two of three "cures": surgery, radiation, and drugs. Surgery can indeed save lives, and has the advantage of removing the tumor. Hope springs forth in the patient and his family, but often cancer shows up somewhere else in the body because the underlying cause has not been addressed. However, surgery poses two complications. "First, it causes physical trauma to the area. This triggers off the healing process which, in turn, brings more trophoblast cells into being as a by-product of that process…The other effect is that, if not all the malignant tissue is removed, what remains tends to be encased in scar tissue …the cancer tends to become insulated from the action of the pancreatic trophoblast cells to the surveillant action of the white blood cells…there is no sold evidence that patients who submit to surgery have any greater life expectancy, on the average, than those who do not" Statistics show that the "rate of long-term survival after surgery is, on the average at best, only ten or fifteen percent. And once the cancer has metastisized to a second location, surgery has almost no survival value" The purpose of X-ray therapy, the second orthodox treatment, is to burn away the tumor. Because tumors are comprised of both cancer and noncancer cells, and X-rays are more effective in destroying noncancer cells than cancer, the effect is to "increase the percentage of malignancy" (p. 142). This treatment seems to increase the probability that cancer will appear in another part of the body given time because it damages the body, causing a production of trophoblast cells that are trying to bring healing and because it lessens the production of white blood cells. Statistics do not show that X-ray treatment improves the chance for survival. Griffin next explains how the American Cancer Society arrives at its positive sounding statistics for orthodox treatment.Extract from The story of vitamin b17 by G.EDWARDS GRIFFIN. vitaminb17.org/ Post Date: 12/07/08, Replies: 1
GREAT LIVER CLEANSER BEETROOT The vegetable that I most strongly recommend for general health improvement and especially for those with cancer is beetroot. The purple pigment has been shown to increase and normalise cell respiration - the oxygen-based energy production within cells. Thus beetroot is one of the key foods in preventing as well as curing cancer. It is equally important in the treatment of other degenerative diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome that are all characterised by reduced cell respiration. .The active ingredient in beetroot is called betacyanin with two carbonyl groups (C=0-). What happens when cellular energy is produced through the oxidation of nutrients is that electrons and hydrogen ions are transferred onto the inhaled oxygen to produce water and energy. In cancer cells and with chronic fatigue the respiratory enzymes that accomplish this transfer have been diminished or destroyed. The colour pigment in beetroot (and other purple food) strongly binds electrons and hydrogen and with this can reactivate the production of cellular oxidative energy. Seeger and others (1990) have shown that the respiration of cancer cells can be completely normalised by a combination of beetroot, raw fermented food and vitamin C. The multiplication of cancer cells would thus stop, and tumours become non-virulent. Clinical tests using beetroot with cancer patients revealed that often tumours regressed and disappeared. Therefore use plenty of beetroot grated in salads, juiced and cooked; also the residue from juicing may be cooked. Occasionally a small root may leave an acrid aftertaste. Taste suspect roots before making salads or juice; cooking them is fine, and beet tops may be cooked also. Tinned beetroot has lost most of its pigments and is of little value.Beetroot may be available only seasonally. You may store a larger quantity in moist sand. Keep the tops exposed in a cool, shaded place with just enough moisture to prevent drying out. After a good root system has developed you may also let them continue to grow in a sandy and well drained soil, neither too wet nor too dry to avoid rotting or mould development, check frequently. Concerns about estrogen rumours I'll be frank; while I've tried some of my own research, all I've found are completely varied responses on my concerns with soy. From nutritionists to doctors to magazines, everyone seems to have a different take. I'm concerned with rumours(from both vegan and carnivorous sides) that soy and tofu have high levels of estrogen, which could pose potential health problems to whoever eats them. Does anyone have any information on this? I'll admit I'm suspicious this is just something cooked up by meat/dairy industries, but I can't help but be concerned. Any information would be greatly appreciated! -Alexandrs Post Date: 08/13/08, Replies: 27
