| New Vegetarian in College - Help Needed I recently decided to go vegetarian and so far I have been meat-free for 3 whole days! I'm very excited about the change in my diet, but I am finding it very hard to get in enough protein in my diet. Additionally, I have Celiac's Disease and can't eat any gluten products. I cannot prepare any food, besides what can be warmed up in a microwave or what can be made in a blender, (I have a Magic Bullet.) I would really like to stick with it. I had always wanted to try being a vegetarian when I was younger, but it never really stuck. After watching Food Inc., my decision was solidified. I really need some help - what can I eat for protein, and what are some good snacks to keep on stock? I would really appreciate any input - thanks for the help everyone! | Lost and looking for direction Hi, I'm brand new here and hope I'm in the right forum. I signed up today because my son has been talking to me about wanting to live full vegan, but we have a problem that our nutritionist doesn't seem to be able to wrap her head around. My son is allergic to nuts, beans and all legumes including peanuts and soybeans, and through trial and error we've discovered he's got numerous gluten sensitivities. Wheat and its cousins all cause stomach upset, and he can semi-tolerate oats. Most seeds seem to be okay, so there's that at least. My question is, what in God's name is he supposed to be able to eat to give both adequate protein and variety? We've given up completely on anything remotely processed from the store because everything has nuts or soy. Specifically, we're trying to find recipes that don't end with the concoction tasting like fish flavored cardboard made out of rotted grass. One can only add so much spirulina before it starts to taste like regurgitated sea floor, and while chia and hemp seeds help the protein a little, again too much to get the right combo and adequate amount ends with the product tasting terrible (not to mention bowel irritation). I know there's got to be things I've either overlooked or never heard of that someone has to have experience with. Thank you to any that can help. Post Date: 10/06/15, Replies: 5 | ||
| Veg College Athlete - the Protein ? So you've probably heard this question asked a billion times before. I'm sorry for asking it again, but this is a big concern among my friends and family. I run cross country and track in college. 4-6 miles 6 days a week, strength training 3 days a week. I need my diet to be about 20-30% protein to stay healthy, maintain my current muscle, and build more muscle. I know this is totally achievable on a veg diet, but I'm a little stuck on the How? question. What are some meatless sources of protein that I can eat every day to ensure that I'm getting enough? | new vegan - feeling drowsy on carbs Hi, I'm a new vegan (one month old) and I work as a post lady, so need plenty of calories. I've been eating a lot of pulses and millet with oils to get enough calories as well as plenty of vegetables. (I easily lose weight if I don't eat enough). But I feel really sleepy soon after a main meal, and my joints have been aching a bit, and clicking. Any ideas of how I can adjust things to feel better? Thanks everyone. | Vegan diet to help with back surgery? Namaste, I am a recent "convert" to veganism, many factors drew me towards it - health social awareness and it just made sense that it the real way I should eat. I am 44 and recently underwent a lower back surgery. I was 80lbs overweight before the surgery and when I "converted" to vegan lost 20 the two months prior to surgery. Fortunately the surgery was successful but I'm in a bit of pain which can be expected. However I know that extra 60lb I still have I need to permanently leave my body would help my back feel and recover better. With the healing I have going and the meds I am on I am limited to what I can do. Anyone have any thoughts the best approach to go about shedding the weight healthily. Been thinking a green smoothie fast fair a while or a mix of smoothies / raw salads / and bean soup. I'm a real newbie to this and looking for advice! Don't want too screw up the surgery plus really would feel better is I was not overweight. Post Date: 07/12/15, Replies: 4 | ||
| How crazy is this?! OK, bit of background. I am coeliac and also suffer from Crohn's disease (although currently this is in remission) and recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I suffer a lot with pain and fatigue. I have had to gradually transition to vegetarianism because my body doesn't like big diet changes. I was warned not to do it by my GP because I am prone to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly B12. My diet now consists of lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts, gluten free grains, some beans and lentils (the ones my gut will tolerate) tofu, seaweed, unsweetened almond or coconut milk, occasional Quorn pieces, organic eggs, cheese, yoghurt, and I do occasionally eat clams or mussels (bivalves) because of the B12 issue. And of course, the odd bit of treat food. But I find I don't crave sugar as much as I used to. My GP thought I would not thrive on this and I would come to him sick in no time. But my last lot of blood tests? First time in 5 years I don't need any B12 shots, despite reduced dairy intake my calcium is better than it's ever been, and potassium is normal instead of on the edge. I have had anaemia every winter for 5 years, and this year? Iron levels are fine. And only one cold this winter compared to my usual three or four by now. Just goes to show hey..... | Headaches and Restlessness Ive been vegan for a really long time now and I recently have been suffering from headaches, constipation and insomnia. Also my whole right side of my body is swollen too and my mom says its a genetic thing but, I only started noticing it. I went to the emergency room to get a CT scan and I don't have anything wrong in my head atm. My cats have worms and ive been thinking that's what it is but, Ive been doing tons of research in hopes of curing this. I am currently on a parasitic cleanse to see if that fixes it. Also I take vitamin B12, C, Iron and a probiotic regularly. I don't eat many greens either. If anyone knows what is wrong with me please help. Post Date: 07/12/15, Replies: 3 | ||

| Supplement help needed, desperately Hey, even though my big hero Gary Yourofsky says he doesn't (need/)take any supplements as a vegan, I've decided to take one just to be sure. The problem is that I can't find any supplements meeting my criteria, which is: 1) it contains the methylcobalamin b12 form (because that's supposed to be used more effectively than other forms, also it's natural and non-toxic), 2) that the daily needs (for all 'nutrients') are met, 3) that it's vegan, obviously, 4) that it contains other important vitamins and/or minerals, such as d-vitamin, and 5) that it doesn't cost wayyy too much (and I really want the cheapest one possible). Thanks in advance! Post Date: 06/10/15, Replies: 3 | ||

| NEW Course for a Healthy Heart - T. Colin T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and eCornell partner with top Ivy League faculty to offer new online course [ITHACA, NY] The T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, in partnership with eCornell, is pleased to announce the release of a new online course, “Nutrition for a Healthy Heart.” The new course features lectures from Cornell University faculty, the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, as well as bestselling authors and researchers. “Most people know that heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the U.S. and other Western countries,” says Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus at Cornell University. “And most people know, more or less, that diet is a factor in causing heart disease, but only a few really know how profound is this effect or which foods might be problematic. It’s time to highlight scientific evidence that demonstrates how heart disease can be prevented and, even more dramatically, how people can be treated to reverse this disease.” The two-week course is designed to be readily accessible to the public without scientific or medical training, while offering new research for a variety of health professionals. Topics range from contemporary heart disease research and medical practices to stocking a kitchen with heart-healthy foods. Like the Center’s best-selling Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition, the heart course plans to offer continuing education credits for a variety of health disciplines. eCornell’s unique approach to online learning combines cutting-edge technologies with Ivy League thought leadership in an engaging, collaborative online learning environment. eCornell’s online courses are self-paced, instructor-facilitated, and focus on real-world objectives. eCornell has delivered online courses to more than 50,000 students in more than 200 countries. “Collaborating with the Center for Nutrition Studies furthers our commitment to maximizing the opportunity for anyone, anywhere to receive impactful content directly from Cornell University,” says Chad Oliveiri, eCornell’s Vice President of Content and Partnerships. “It’s not at all a stretch to say the content we’re building with the Center is truly life-changing.” The T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, formerly known as the T. Colin Campbell Foundation, is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization based in Ithaca, NY. Their mission is to promote optimal nutrition through science-based education, advocacy, and research. | Sprouted seeds, beans and grains Hi Everyone, I have recently become vegan, but for a long time I have been eating sprouted beans in meals, and have read how beneficial they are for taking in optimal nutrition. These are living foods and when sprouted the vitamin content increases many fold. There is plenty of info online, and in books for more details. I usually sprout green and brown lentils, chick peas and fenugreek seeds. They are so easy to grow in your kitchen, and store in the fridge for quite a few days. Happy sprouting Happy Cows! | Raw fruits & veggie allergy. Any advice? I have had Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) since I was 5 or 6 and if I eat any raw fruits or vegetables, an allergic reaction happens causing my throat to hurt and it becomes hard to swallow. It's not life threatening but it is uncomfortable enough to not want to eat any raw fruits or veggies. Because of this allergy, my diet has been pretty bad since it's just easier to eat fast food or anything else instead of finding ways to eat healthy. I stay pretty active so I'm not overweight and don't have any serious health problems but I know if I continue eating this way I will eventually so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I can do to eat around this allergy. If the fruits and vegetables are cooked I can eat them. The allergy is caused by a certain protein in the fruit or vegetable but is easily destroyed by heat, thus when cooked, it is fine. I'd honestly like to become vegan because of the health benefits but I'm afraid my allergy will make this very difficult. If anyone has any recipes they could recommend or just tips in general about what to do, it would be much appreciated. Post Date: 03/05/15, Replies: 7 | ||

| Silent Retreat Venue Would anyone have any idea where I could find a QUIET venue to hold a 21 day silent meditation retreat in Europe. We hope to hold the retreat in mid to late June or early July and it needs to be more on the low budget end of the price scale. We would need beds for 12 people (preferably single rooms), a meditation hall and we would do all our own vegetarian cooking. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. | B12 - a new potential source discovered This is mainly of theoretical interest presently: One of the most widespread microorganisms in the world has been found to produce vitamin B12. It does it to such an extent that it is believed to be the provider of B12 to innumerable numbers of marine organisms all over the world that need it. In my blog posting "A new B12 source is discovered – the missing link for vegans?" I am discussing the possibility that this might potentically be a B12 source for vegetarians. | Why sunscreen and cream are bad for you Hi all, Last week, a friend of mine told me that sunscreen and moisturizer are actually unnecessary and do more harm than good. She said that they actually CAUSE skin cancer rather than prevent it, which is why so many Americans have it nowadays, even though they use sunblock or sunscreen. She also said that the chemicals used in most moisturizing creams are bad for your skin. I always felt this way too, since the Oil of Olay moisturizing cream I put on my face feels so sticky and uncomfortable on my skin, and made my skin feel like it can't breathe. So I found it odd that so many people were recommending it, including skin care professionals. I also have started having frequent pimple outbreaks after using facial moisturizing cream. Once I stopped using facial creams, the acne stopped as well. Gee thanks Momopi, for recommending this standard skin care regiment that caused me so many acne problems, which I didn't have before. (sarcastic tone) Thanks for believing everything the skin care industry tells us without question or critical thought. Razz. I hope that now, you realize the downsides of what you were told, and its potential harmful effects and bad chemicals. Now let's look at some basic logic here: - Humans have been fine without sunscreen and facial moisturizers for thousands of years, without having any skin cancer problems. So why the hell is it a necessity nowadays when it wasn't for thousands of years? This logic fallacy is huge and not addressed by the skin care industry. - How is it that humans began having skin cancer when sunblock was invented, but they didn't have it before? That should speak volumes right there. - Humans have evolved under the sun for millions of years, so why is the sun now a dangerous thing that you have to protect against with sunscreen? The sun is the source of life and provides vitamin D for your skin. The worse it can do to you is give you a sunburn or dehydrate you. A sunburn is like a chemical peel, and not harmful at all. Kids get it all the time. It's not lethal. - How come the blacks in Africa who don't use sunscreen don't get skin cancer, but black Americans who do use sunscreen get skin cancer? That right there speaks volumes. Anyway, my facial skin has been a lot better since I stopped putting moisturizing cream on it, and using organic soap without bad chemicals on it. People like Momopi would say that I was using the wrong moisturizer and that I should keep trying others until my acne outbreaks stop. But come on, get real. There are thousands of facial moisturizers out there. I can't just buy all of them and try them every week like a wild goose chase. Besides, I don't have a dry skin problem. In fact, my face is usually oily. So what's the point of using a moisturizer anyway? Why go through all the trouble? It doesn't make sense! I don't get why highly intelligent and educated people like Momopi lack critical thinking skills when it comes to believing whatever we are told by corrupt sources. My friend told me that there is a conspiracy between the skin care industry that sells sunscreen and the cancer industry that profits from it. So you'd best avoid them both altogether. My intuition felt that she was right, based on my experience and gut feeling, as well as the basic logic points outlined above. What do you all think? Have we all been duped regarding sunscreen and facial moisturizers? Here are some articles I found that suggest that sunscreen can actually cause skin cancer and do more harm than good. One of them is even by NBC. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/28796417/ns/health-skin_and_beauty/t/does-sunscreen-save-skin-or-damage-it/ http://www.naturalnews.com/001264.html http://taraariano.com/moisturizer-the-big-lie/ http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/home/sunscreen-giving-you-cancer.htm http://www.thebetterhealthstore.com/Newsletter/062510_Sunscreen_01.html http://inhabitat.com/study-suggests-that-sunscreen-could-cause-skin-cancer/ http://www.aolnews.com/2010/05/24/study-many-sunscreens-may-be-accelerating-cancer/ If you Google "moisturizers cause acne" you will get many hits as well. | Books for a young vegetarian? Hi there... I just found this site and am hoping you all can help me! My daughter recently decided she wanted to be a vegetarian. She has been doing great (i am a long time veg so she's not a stranger). I was wondering if anyone could recommend some books bout the importance of nutrition and making smart choices. She is 10 years old, so they would need to be geared towards the 'tween set. I just want to make sure she understands that yes, french fries may be vegetarian, but they are still "sometimes" food and that her body needs higher quality food to grow strong and healthy. Obviously, I will guide her... But she is an avid reader and fascinated with health, so figured this would be a good way to open up the dialogue between us. In any case, do books like this exist? Or do I need to start writing one? Lol!!! Thank you kindly for any suggestions. Post Date: 11/20/14, Replies: 4 | ||
| Headache when switching to vegan? Hello lovely happy cow community! I'm a brand new vegan...four days. I've been a vegetarian for about a month, but the mountain of positive evidence for living a full vegan lifestyle have kept pilling higher and higher, and I finally decided that I couldn't ignore it anymore and needed to make the switch. In the change to vegan, I not only cut out dairy and other animal products, but also out refined sugars, corn bi-products, and most processed foods. Yesterday and today, I've had stomach pains and pretty severe headaches. Is this just part of the detox process? If so, any guesses on how long it should last? I drink plenty of water (10-12 cups/day), and I eat a wide variety of healthy, whole foods, so I really can't think of anything specifically wrong in my diet that could be causing these symptoms. | Stomach issues since vegetarianism Hey there! I started going vegetarian for a project for Environmental Science class, and lately I've noticed that my stomach has been cramping on and off. It will go from mild to severe cramping. My doctor said it's because I'm overweight. I thought it was because of coffee, so I nixed the coffee. It still happens. Could someone please give me advice for what to do? Post Date: 10/28/14, Replies: 13 |
