| Does HC underrepresent vegfriendly venues? Health food store - We will add it just as soon as possible. I found a Thai restaurant in Folsom, CA yesterday with a separate vegan-friendly dinner menu with over 30 items, and about 15 items on a separate veg lunch menu. I think it's important to have this restaurant to put Folsom on the map, otherwise vegans traveling thru here have zero options. But I ran into the below policy. Folsom is a mainstream city that does not have any pure vegetarian restaurants, nor health food stores (other than ones selling only vitamins), nor farmers' markets that I know of. A vegan traveling thru Folsom might love to know about this restaurant, but I can't seem to get it listed b/c of the policy below, which I think does a disservice to travelers. I think that when one does a search for "100% vegetarian restaurants" for a particular city, they should simply get a "no match found" message. Or a "no match found, but this city has at least one listing for a veg-friendly restaurant." The policy: "Also note regarding Veg-friendly but Not 100% Vegetarian: In order to add a new US city to the HappyCow website, there needs to be a pure vegetarian restaurant OR a health food store in that city also, in order for us to add veg-friendly/not 100% veg places. Otherwise, when a visitors chooses the "Show 100% vegetarian only" default, the newly created city will not show, and the website will lead the visitor to an ERROR page ("this page does not exist... there are no vegetarian restaurants in this city")." | Food courts with a single vegetarian stall Once again I recently came across a vegetarian stall in a non-vegetarian food court. The individual stalls share some of their kitchen utensils, but seem to prepare most of their food separately. However contrary to a market hall a food court like this (Pier 21 in Bangkok) will be run as a single enterprise. The employees taking orders for the vegetarian food have no particular affinity to vegetarianism and the supply chain is likely to be the same as for all the other kitchens. It's a single restaurant operation. For a vegetarian there are at least two reasons to favour vegetarian restaurants over regular ones. The first is the wish to eat food that isn't "contaminated" with residues of non-vegetarian food preparation. This might be due to neglect of staff that doesn't have any affinity to vegetarianism, general laxness etc. The second is the wish not to support businesses that generate most of their profits by killing or abusing animals. (I regard the second aspect as much more important as the first, because the second is less about me and my "purity" and more about animals and their interests.) So does a vegetarian food counter in a non-vegetarian food court qualify as vegetarian? The Happycow community seems convinced it does. I couldn't find any examples of vegetarian stalls being downgraded because of their surrounding. But shouldn't we take the context into consideration? The split-up of a restaurant into a vegetarian stall, a stall for fish and a stall for meat is arbitrary. Is this much better than to separate Asian, European and Arabic kitchens from each other (and have vegetarian choices marked as such on each menu)? What is won by the first set-up? To provide an example: The MBK Centre Food Court in Bangkok gets 4 out of 5 stars on Happycow (http://www.happycow.net/reviews/vegetarian-food-mbk-bangkok-341). I haven't been to the place, but if it is run like the food courts I have seen, the vegetarian counter belongs to the same restaurant operation that is famous for its Shark Fin Soup (see the MBK Bangkok review on Tripadvisor). Shark fin is one of the ingredients explicitly despised by Happycow. (Try to create an entry for a non-vegetarian restaurant and read the note!) Shouldn't we take this into consideration? | For good race relations See this page - www.happycow.net/north_america/index.html - I suggest that we have a dedicated section for "Central America & Mexico" - I had to twist my grey head walnut 3 times around to find El Salvador - it never crossed my mind to look in North America - from "Gringo in Viet Nam" Post Date: 06/24/07, Replies: 2 | ||
| Forum Rules for HappyCow I think all personal attacks and passive aggressive behavior should be grounds for banishment. On the Postpunkkitchen.com the moderators first talk to the offender and let them know if their post was inflammatory. If it happens again or the person doesn't apologize or clarify themselves they are banned. There's no room for negativity. When a discussion goes beyond positive constructive friendly debate it should be removed. Post Date: 09/22/08, Replies: 15 | ||
| function rooms for private parties I would love it if Happy Cow could somehow list info for restaurants that have a private function room for parties. I have been pulling my hair out trying to find such a place in Vancouver. I suppose it's not such a big deal for cities with very few options but for larger cities, it is a real mission to find out this information! Cheers! | Grandfathered 5 Stars Reviews I just noticed when trying to give my favorite restaurant a 5 star review that I was only able to give them a maximum of 4 stars for only being veg-friendly. I personally have no problem with this and support this rating system. Though, I noticed earlier when giving another review to SOL CAL cafe, that it shows them with 4 1/2 stars while scrolling through. Over a year ago they switched from being fully vegan to serving meat and dairy. It seems they were allowed to grandfather in their 5 star ratings from when they were vegan. It doesn't seem fair to me that restaurants that abandon vegetarianism get to keep their ratings exclusive to vegetarian restaurants and not deal with the same handicap as their competitors. They should have to play by the same rules and have their 5 star reviews taken down to 4. Post Date: 02/15/17, Replies: 1 | ||

| Happy Cow Donation Purpose? Hello Happy Cow, Firstly, what a wonderful website, Happy Cow Mobile Phone Application, community and service provide. For that, Thank You! I have a question if I may in relation to why you offer donation options to your website? My understanding, thus far, is that you offer a variety of store items to include apparel, receive funds through advertisements on your website and, offer a mobile application at a cost in extension to your website (which is wonderful by the way). To this I ask myself why the donation and to where or whom benefits from this? There at some point would be an excess for profit once you collaborate all of the aforementioned into one basket. Am I mistaken in thinking that you would be an in profit organisation? If so and you are positively using the donations in weaker sectors in need of support for people, animals or to better spread "the word" then, could you please guide to me where this information can be located, if at all? Warm regards, fnv PS. If any member/s could shed some light that would be wunderbar. Post Date: 12/25/13, Replies: 3 | ||
| Happy cow member of the week I think it would be cool if we had a member of the week for each week. Or member of the month or year. Maybe decided by number of reviews writen the week before, best written review, best picture uploaded, or simply by popular vote. I like the idea of voting on happy cow; it seems like a way to get people more involved. Proposing candidates and whatnot. Hey for that matter, does HC have an ambassador? OK that one is a stretch. LOL but you see what i'm getting at here. Post Date: 09/04/11, Replies: 3 | ||

| Hong Kong Suggestion 1 - have Hong Kong as a sub-category of Asia - it takes some intense lateral thinking to find it by first going through China. Hong Kong can be given its officla current name of Hong Kong SAR - this strategy is good until 2047. Next suggestion - split Hong Kong into 3 areas - 1) Hong Kong Island 2) Kowloon 3) New Territories. This will make navigation of HappyCow much easier. Involve me in this. I believe that there are 70+ veggy restaurants in Hong Kong - many of which will opt for FRIEND / paid listings if they see more business coming from their listing. | How Long Before a Draft Post is Timed Out? Yes, yes, we all appreciate that we need to be sensible and prepare anything of substance in a programme such as 'Word' and then cut and paste it. In the real world however we are human and sometimes commence what is intended as being a short reply in situ. It gets longer - time drifts by - and then BOOM! One's internet has lost connection to that page and half an hour's work has also been permanently lost. My i.t. knowledge is close to zero, but I get the impression that on many sites one is not timed out provided one keeps typing. However, I lost a detailed post here which was disappointing, particularly as I put in a lot of work instead of going to bed. Please advise as to how exactly the timed out procedure works here. Please presume complete ignorance and you won't be far off the mark. Thanks. Post Date: 12/29/12, Replies: 1 | ||

| I just went to a new shelter today looking I just went to a new shelter today looking to adopt a dog with little time to rescue and find it a home. My husband is allergic to cats so we cannot have any. There was this little black and white kitten about 8 weeks old, quiet, nice and playful. She has been there a week today and that is there limit! I just did not feel right leaving her there and I cried the whole way home. I would be willing to pay her adoption fee even though and whatever else if the right person would give her a home. I hope she is not dead by then. I am going to call the shelter and tell her that I am coming to get her. They are closed tomorrow because that's when they get rid of the old animals. Please someone respond. Thanks you can text me at 714-615-8870. I live in temecula, ca Post Date: 07/09/14, Replies: 6 |
