They should just make all prisons Vegetarian. They gave up their rights to make their own choices when they committed the crimes...LOL, I'm kidding. But at least some people can be forced to make better choices. ;)

I worked for the state in mental health (a large % of our population was there because they committed a crime so it was a lot like prison). We of course offered vegetarian and vegan food. One of the big reasons a lot of places offer it is due to their rights. They may lose a lot of their rights when they go in there but they still get a lot of choice over their food. Now I can't speak for the prison system or outside of my state but that is a big thing here is preserving their rights. We offered veggie burgers, veggie crumble, and a lot of bean and lentil dishes. I was fighting for tofu on the menu (I did a cost benefit analysis to show how cost effective it could be) but last I heard they still haven't added it. I think it's great that lots of other places are offering vegetarian food as well. If it isn't mandated everywhere I think it should be. I think making a vegetarian eat meat is like cruel and unusual punishment, lol.

Yeah if I was in prison and the only choice I had was meat, I'd be dead in no time. I'd rather die than eat meat...

Recent news articles about US mall shootings have abundant McDonald's references.
A pig farmer was just convicted of being a mass murderer.
Serious meat eaters scare me.

You have a good point Stig. If people are going to mindlessly kill animals and/or abuse them [completely void of compassion], I have a feeling that they're more apt to harming humans as well.
I posted a blog about a vivisection case recently, and this is a comment I received back on it [below]. It scared me that I knew someone who thinks like this. We're still in debate right now, but I want to share his comment with you:
"Plus if people don't want to think about how animals do get used as lab stand ins for humans, or studied to understand how they work, well then don't."
Pretty scary, and to think, there are SEVERAL people who think this way.
[Just so you know, I did comment back to his asinine oblivious comments]

Animal torture is one of the early signs that someone may become a violent criminal.

Eric McDavid - Vegan Food Victory!
by Sacramento Prisoner Support
Saturday Dec 15th, 2007 3:13 PM
Sacramento County Main Jail says they are changing policy...
Dear friends,
On Thursday, during an interview with his lawyer and probation officer for his Pre-Sentencing Report, Eric was visited by jail commander Scott Jones. Jones informed Eric that, effective immediately, Eric would begin receiving two veggie burgers every night for dinner (thus far he has only been receiving one). His breakfast and lunch situation will remain the same - he will continue to eat what he can from the trays they bring him. This arrangement will continue until the jail fully implements its new policy of providing vegan food to prisoners who request it! We are still figuring out the details and time-lines, but this is a HUGE victory for Eric and all of you who helped make this happen - as well as for future vegan prisoners. Eric would like to thank all of you for your support and hard work - he could not have done this without you. Again, we will send out more details as they become available.
Also, please remember that Eric's sentencing is scheduled for January 24. Please consider writing a letter to the judge to urge the lowest possible sentence for Eric. The US Attorney is still indicating that they will be pushing for the maximum sentence of 20 years. The judge needs to hear from Eric's friends and family – he needs to know that Eric is a well-respected, honest, compassionate, non-violent person. It is important for Judge England to know that the acts charged in the indictment are out of character for Eric. Some things you might mention in your letter include:
(1)How long you have known Eric
(2)How you met him and how you know him (i.e. school, work, mutual friends, etc.)
(3)Any experiences you have had with Eric that demonstrate what you think are important aspects of his character
Address your letter to:
Judge England
U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California-Sacramento
501 "I" Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
Please DO NOT send your letter directly to Judge England. Instead, please send them directly to Eric's lawyer:
Mark Reichel
555 Capitol Mall, 6th Floor - Suite 600
Sacramento, CA 95814
Please mail your letter with your original signature as soon as possible. Again, letters should be sent to Eric's lawyer, Mark Reichel, and not to the judge.
Thank you all for your hard work and support!
