Help! I have a vegan friend visiting! Hello everyone. I will be honest, I am not a vegan or strict vegetarian. I am looking for some advice/help answering a question. I have a good friend coming later this spring to visit me and she is vegan. I want to make sure she is comfortable here, especially with cooking/food. My question is cooking for a vegan similar to cooking for someone who is glutten free? I only ask since I have another friend who is glutten free and she cannot use any utensils/cooking pots that have had wheat products in them. So, is this similar for vegans? No animal products on cooking items? Again, i want to make sure she is comfortable here for her stay and I want to surprize her =). I will get seperate cooking items for her if necessary. please let me know if you can help or recommend what to do. Post Date: 02/24/12, Replies: 5

Food Research Study (Online Survey) Hello everyone! I am an undergraduate psychology student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and I am currently conducting some research on people’s eating habits and attitudes toward food. I am trying to survey a broad sample of people from different walks of life. As part of this research, I am conducting a brief, anonymous survey, which should take only 20-30 minutes to complete. The survey is entirely online, and everyone who takes part will be entered into a draw for a cash prize of $300CAD on January 30th. If you are interested in participating, please visit psyclab1.psych.ubc.ca/~matt/food.php. If you have any questions, you can contact me at [email protected] Thank you very much for your time. Housemate wanted in Parkside, Adelaide Hi there! I have a room available in beautiful Parkside, South Australia. I'd obviously love at least a vegetarian (my diet is vegan) to move in which is why I'm posting here. Other preferences include - non-smoking, believe in animal rights, have a steady full-time job or full-time student, lover of the Beatles and Rolling stones and all fab music (except rap, hip-hop, death metal, r&b - sorry I can't stand it!), enjoy a drink and a laugh. The room is a large double (in a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom maisonette), the backyard is really big, and there's a split system in the living room. It's a short walk to Unley Rd and George St and the city is just on the other side of the parklands :) I work full time from home, and I share my life with the best dog in the world, so there won't be room for any other animals. The rent is $155 per week (initial bond is $945). Please get in touch if you're interested or know someone who would be! Post Date: 01/08/12, Replies: 0

new vegan- need someone encouragement Hi! i'm Marty (girl). i'm a 22 year old from washington state. i've been a vegetarian before, and it was easy for me. maybe i've never been that dependent on meat. anyway, i was thinking of what my new years resolutions were going to be, and i wanted to be really healthy, and lose weight. i want to test my body's limits and flush out all the bad things in it. while i'm not preachy about animal rights, i am an animal lover, and the more i think about the way animals are treated, the more i don't want to eat meat or dairy products. i'm looking for someone who will keep me on track. all of my friends are meat-eating, dairy-guzzling people. so its really hard to have someone supporting me. i would prefer it to be through e-mail or facebook or something. i need someone who i can vent about all my cravings to, and someone to share their vegan secrets with me so i can be successful. :) thank you! -Marty Post Date: 11/12/11, Replies: 2

Vegan questionnaire for my A Level. What factors influenced you to take up a vegan lifestyle choice? (Health, environmental, social, animal welfare, cultural) To what extent are you vegan? (Food, clothing, purchases) Do you find it easy to purchase foods that meet your lifestyle choice, if not, why not? Is there anything you think could be done to make it easier to purchase and produce foods that meet the rules for a vegan diet? What do you typically have for a main meal and how long does it take to prepare? Are there any products you feel the vegan market is lacking? As a vegan, are you aware of the health and deficiency risks involved? Have you ever encountered any health issues regarding your lifestyle choice, if so what? Do you take any supplements? Do you prefer a fresh prepared main meal or ready meal? When purchasing Vegan ready meals how much do you usually spend? What foods do you use to substitute sources of vital nutrition such as iron? Is there anything you would like to add? Thank you for taking part. Post Date: 11/06/11, Replies: 0

Animal Rights Petition For all those who are interested I started a petition on animal rights at Whitehouse.gov. There is a new feature called We The People that accepts any petition. It will go live and be searchable once the number of signatures hits 150. Please read, sign, and pass on. wh.gov/4SP Extend Animal Cruelty Laws to Factory Farm Animals Every year in the U.S. approximately 10 billion farm animals are subject to extensive suffering and inhumane living conditions in factory farms that no animal kept as a pet would ever experience. This is primarily a result of laws known as “Common Farming Exemptions”. These laws allow animals raised for food to be given virtually no consideration in regards to the pain and suffering they experience. Common conditions in factory farms include debeaking of chickens without anesthesia, removal of piglets’ tails after birth, chick culling (the killing of all male chicks shortly after birth in the egg industry), extremely confining spaces, and of course the eventual slaughter of the animal. It’s time to recognize that animals can suffer and feel pain whether or not they are our pets. Post Date: 10/04/11, Replies: 1

Vegan House Share Woking Main stream, non hippy vegan looking to join existing house share or to start one. I commute daily into Waterloo, so ideally would like a house share within walking distance of Woking station. Parking and internet are essential. Would be nice to have dishwasher, gas stove and en suite bathroom. Please get in touch if you are also looking for a similar house share. Post Date: 08/29/11, Replies: 0

Needing some support I just registered for this site because I recently made the decision to become a vegetarian. I am completely appalled by the way that animals are treated that become food. I know this is going to be hard. There are a lot of family gatherings where meat is the main dish and most of the time the only dish. I know i'm going to get slack, but I don't care. I can't contribute to the cruelty anymore. I'm 27 and that means 27 years of animals being tortured to feed me. I'm sick, I can't stand it. I love animals, I have a small animal refuge in my house. I have 2 dogs, 11 cats, 8 guinea pigs, 4 mice, 1 hamster and 13 rats, all of which are rescues that I love and would do anything for. How can I continue to eat meat when I feel so strongly about animal rights. I really need people to talk to that share my beliefs. No one in my family does including my husband. I also have an 18 month old daughter who I would like to be a vegetarian with me. I know this will bring up a lot of problems from family members. I really need some support, words of wisdom or anything that anyone has to offer to me. Thanks so much, Jenny Post Date: 07/24/11, Replies: 6
Advice? New Veg + Foodie + Love Rest! Hi All, I'm a pesetarian, wannabe vegetarian, who recently decided (after reading Safran's Eating Animal) that I am going to try (yet again) to align my taste buds with my values. I really want to be conscious of the choices before me, especially knowing all the negative impact eating meat has on the environment, the planet, etc...so I feel really guilty even when I have fish, bc I don't feel like I do what I preach :/ Yet, when I look at back at the times I have failed (or the reason why I have evolved into a pesetarian) its because I am a big foodie, and love the dining experience. Its just so difficult to find these type of restaurants, and dish selections seem to be so few and far between. I just wanted to know if anyone else encounters the same issue- of not knowing what restaurants offer the most vegetarian friendly options? What do you do? Do you eat out less bc of it? I read an earlier review that said "when in doubt, bring your own". But when you're not a good cook like me, with a busy schedule and living in an awesome foodie city like San Francisco, that's really hard-- especially if you're single :/ If you're a fellow lover of restaurant dining, perhaps some suggestions here? What do you go through in the search process? Or am i the only one with this frustration of feeling like restaurant/dish selection becomes limited? I really am committed to wanting to be a vegetarian and would love to get any feedback/suggestion so I can finally say, with confidence that I can do it! Thanks!! A present situation in Tokyo,Japan It's too bad and sad. Many people in Japan are arfraid of eating vegetables, even if they are safety. Because of "the rumor" or "misunderstanding". One of my favorite restaurant,"J's kitchen" in Tokyo was colsed the other day. And Not only "Little Heaven" but also many this kind of restaurants fall into crisis. I never hope "misunderstanding for vegitables" confuse the people and distress their managers. If people who love vegetables on this site visit Japan, I want you to taste and enjoy Vegan&Vegetarian retaurants as much as possible. Of course, residents in Japan, too. Hong Kong Vegetarians Recently, for health reasons I have been eating more fruits and vegetables. I try to eat less meat. Sometimes it is tricky to find a restaurant in HK where one can eat alone as many of them have dishes that are meant to be shared. If there is anyone out there living on HK island that would like to share a meal or discover new Veg. restaurants, send me a message and we can try it out! Post Date: 03/24/11, Replies: 1
