Pen-pal? Hi, I've been a quiet member in the HappyCow community for a few years now. I mostly just use the mobile app to locate veg restaurants in new towns I visit! I'm recently interested in finding a pen-pal that I can exchange letters, ideas, photos, etc with! If anyone is interested in exchanging addresses let me know! Post Date: 10/15/13, Replies: 1
Problems Dining out with Parents I apologize if this is not in the right forum section, but I wasn't sure where to put it. I just wanted to address a problem I have while choosing a Vegan friendly place to eat. The problem is that my dad isn't really fond of anything 'different' to him, Asian food, Mexican food, Thai, anything that isn't very classic Steak and Potatoes American. I want to be able to eat at a type of restaurant we're all comfortable with. My mom is usually pretty good with anything though. It is a source of stress and sometimes argument when choosing a place to eat. Tonight we're supposed to go out to eat but I'm a bit nervous about what might happen. :/ What do I dooo..... seeking vegan home in Malibu or Topanga CA Hi, I'm a vegan, creative professional, actress and energy healer, mystic(including astrologer, reader, dowser, energy work, Angel Healings and Readings, and channeling, flower essence co creator, teacher...). I'm seeking a vegan household to join in Malibu or Topanga. I would need one or two rooms for me and my son, who is 11 going on 30, (he is vegan at home+ he has goat's milk at kids parties sometimes), and my lovable, meditative cat. We love making raw vegan meals and some vegan cooked comfort foods, vegan gluten-free pizza, etc. I don't drink alcohol or smoke, don't do drugs or use stimulants (my diets pretty satvic, allergen free), or party wildly. I do love nature, herbalism, Angels, astrology, crystals, making art, writing and music, sungazing, having a cup o tea, and being with animals and children. A quiet home with maybe a garage or outdoor art making space would be awesome for us. We have very few belongings, just the basics and our car, and we're happy to downsize or upsize. We love pesticide free gardens and farms, and have lived rustic in Vermont before, so we'd love to contribute with that too. Feel free to let me know if you have nice place for us to land and would like to meet. Ciao :) Post Date: 10/07/13, Replies: 0
New here and wanting to transition! Hey guys, I am very interested in becoming a vegetarian and hopefully a vegan. My biggest concern is that I am already pretty skinny, close to underweight, and I am nervous that this transition will cause me to lose more weight. Any advice on this? And any advice on transitioning as well! Is it Ok to just go completely meat free right away or is it better to take it one step at a time, eliminating foods one by one? Thanks! :) Post Date: 10/01/13, Replies: 4
Are we being discriminated against? Maybe other people go through similar things, ok they probably do. But it's something that makes me really angry. My work is dedicated to making sure there is no discrimination based on age/race/gender/sexual orientation/culture...which is great! but there seems to be no restriction on goading and questioning non-meat eaters. This is also discrimination. If you experience anything like this then please comment. Post Date: 10/01/13, Replies: 2

I Have a New Job! Pending verification of my credentials, I have a new teaching job. I've been looking for a new position ever since I was advised on 2/14/2013 that the Culinary Arts program would be terminated at year's end due to budget cuts. I'll be working at a rural district that's a 90 minute round trip commute from my current home in Arizona. I used to think that my home was rural ... but this job is located in a community that's so rural, it only has a post office, gas station, and sandwich shop that sells nuts from the pecan orchard and wine from the local vineyard. All of the other businesses on Main Street have long since been boarded up ... the local diner, motel, hardware store, and grocery store are all closed. On the edge of town is an old Texaco gas station with rusted pumps that look like they date back to the 50's or 60's. I wonder whether the owner has ever considered selling these pumps as there are collectors out there who would probably love to restore them. For that matter, as a chef, I wonder what sort of tools and equipment might still be found in the old diner. Since this district is VERY SMALL and will only have 19 high school students next year ... that's 19 total in grades 9-12 ... teachers in this district have to wear multiple hats. The superintendent is still looking to hire people but right now, my job next year will be to teach 2 sections of Culinary Arts and up to 4 sections of history. I will also be the career counselor and will be tasked to dispense my wisdom (such as it is) and advice for students regarding their future career plans. In addition to everything else, I will also be the FCLA coach (Future Culinary Leaders of America). Surprisingly enough, I'll be making $2500 more than I did with my last district. Go figure. I'm not going to complain because the extra money will be needed to pay for my gas. Post Date: 07/26/13, Replies: 1

Trying to make the switch! Hii, I'm Katelyn. I'm currently not a vegetarian or vegan but I would like to be! I want to be healthier and feel better. But I'm curious about how to have a healthy, balanced vegan diet. I know that vegetables and fruits can offer calcium and proteins that your body needs but how do you eat correctly so that you get all the nutrients, vitamins, and proteins you need on a daily basis. Recipes, advice on converting, and any sort of discussion on the topic is welcome! Help me! Post Date: 07/16/13, Replies: 5
Uk Vegan parents? Hi, we are fairly new to veganism but not new to healthy eating and being vegetarians. We have 2 small children who are some of our main reasons to turning vegan but feel surrounded by omnivores and most of all junk eaters!! Would love to know where other vegan parents have made friends and how they have got around the isolation/stigma of being vegan. :) Post Date: 07/04/13, Replies: 2
Vegan from WA~new here New but not new. I've been going to this site for years. But just now decided to join the site/forum. Mainly to try to find other Vegans like me. Preferably near by me. So far it's not looking good. Most people here are either out of the states or from thousands of miles away in another state....so not too sure how much help this place will be. But if you ARE from WA state I'd like to hear from yous :3 would be pretty epic. Post Date: 06/26/13, Replies: 4
Can we pick your brains please? We're two dudes doing some research into new adventures in business and feel that veggies and vegans aren't catered for particularly well at all, and we want to change that. Firstly, we're looking at getting some delicious super-tasty veggie/vegan hampers out into the big wide world and are wondering if anyone out there would actually like one? We're talking really great flavours and beautiful produce with the added bonus of not inconveniencing any animals. If these things existed: A: Would anyone buy them? B: How much would you be prepared to spend? . . and on a more general note, are there any products along these lines that you really want but can't get in your country? . Thanks for reading, and if you can take the time to respond then thank you very much for that too! Post Date: 06/20/13, Replies: 2
the only pea in the UAE pod??? So I have recently made the decision to turn my whole life towards the Vegan direction and its probably the best decision Ive ever made. It would probably have felt alot easier was I living in my home country of the UK but I am currently living in the UAE. Im finding it very difficult to make this lifestyle flow with day to day life, especially when outside the house. Also am finding it a little tiring having to explain myself every single time it comes up in conversation that I am a Vegan and why. It would just be nice to be able to talk to someone who has knowledge of eating different recipes and places I can go that have more than just a plain salad on the menu. If you live in the UAE or can just offer me a little bit of support I would be most grateful. The terms, hippy and tree hugger are getting a little old already. Post Date: 06/10/13, Replies: 2

I had a cookie that changed my life today. I was at my local health food store today looking for vegan staples (organic veg broth etc) and they had these new organic, vegan cookies. I forget the name right now but i still have one left. They were 2 big cookies, i only ate half of one. I got them in ginger snap. They were totally more amazing than any cookie i have ever had. What a real treat. It even had some crystallized ginger on top. Just spectacular. I will have to find the name and post it later so you all can try it. Post Date: 05/23/13, Replies: 5
Sailing as a Vegan or Veg What - you don't fish!! I know - isn't it astonishing. It's hard for me to find Sailing companions and community who are also Veg. One of the tough things is - even fish or meat eaters usually keep it mellow when around vegetarians. This is not possible on long (or even short) sailing trips - as often fishing goes hand in hand. In fact - many sailors I've met consider fishing, just another extension of their 'rugged individualism' and 'from the land' mentality. Of course, they fire up the diesel motor - have no idea how to navigate or avoid collision without their fancy electronics, and yes - quickly jump into that Marina slip - hook up the electric and hoses - and relish in the warm shower that washes off all that rugged individualism they acquired while fending for themselves and arresting a meal from the elements. This is usually done with a fish finder, nylon line - and factory made industrial hook and/or lure. But hey - they caught it themselves. - So - any other sailors out there with an icebox full of tofu and microbrew? A 'catch of the day' in picture form? Post Date: 05/23/13, Replies: 0

Hello you wonderful people you! Hello! My name is Jessica and I'm reallly new to Veganism. And when I say new, I mean new new. I really feel like I've been living with my eyes wide shut, blissfully unaware of animal suffering. Well actually no, I was aware, I thought that buying organic chicken and "cage-free" eggs made it okay. I was wrong. So so so wrong. And now I'm absolutely committed to living a lifestyle that is harmless to animals. At first I had decided I would just go vegetarian, because eggs and dairy don't hurt the animals right? No one dies, right? I was wrong. I decided to make the jump to veganism. I know, there are a ton of people that start being a vegetarian/vegan.. and it last for a day, maybe a week, maybe even a month before they give up. I genuinely think I won't go back. The thought of it makes me physically sick. Anywayyyyys, I digress, hi! What I would really like are some meal suggestions for people who like things plain, just a few ingrediants. I'd also like any tips for people who are just starting out. Thanks!!! Post Date: 04/15/13, Replies: 2
