Hello! I have been a vegan for just about 1 year and 1 month now. I live in Tel Aviv, Israel, an extremely vegan-friendly city! :) It's fun and easy to be a vegan here.
trinitybourne01/08/2014 13:46:57
Hi Brok! Sending waves through the ether from Glastonbury. A super-easy-to-be-vegan town in England! I've been vegan for 20 years now - never looked back. Trinity x
Teamair01/08/2014 14:44:19
I'm a birth vegan, and have been raised a practicing and active vegan :) it's always been such a massive part of my life and I'm proud of it! I'm from Liverpool, England, so a pretty good place to be a vegan :)
Cascadian01/08/2014 19:12:36
Hello and Welcome to the new folks! :-)

It is really great that we first posters on this thread are all Vegan. Sadly I was not raised Vegan myself but I joined the party as soon as I got an invite! ;-)

Now I have been Vegan for about 21 years, since my early teens. I have 3 great kids who've all been Vegan since the start as their mother and I were both Vegan for several years before the kids were born.

I call Portland, Oregon (usa) home and love to meet other Vegans - so come visit soon! :-)

Brok: What a fun nickname you have! It's been great watching Veganism so rapidly become a much larger part of the culture in Israel over the last decade. I've heard that the falafel on Shenkin Street is the best around - do you agree?

Trinity: Thanks for helping welcome the new folks! I've been hearing wonderful things about Glastonbury for years - perhaps I'll be able to visit someday!

Teamair: It's always nice to meet folks who've been Vegan since birth. My kids are and the oldest is pretty close to your age now. :-)

Hi All,
I am a 40 year old new vegetarian (along with my hubby - HOORAY!!), blogging about my experience. I find it is really helping me to stay committed and grow in my journey. Hope you will join me at:

ClareDarwish01/08/2014 19:14:48
Hi Everyone! I've been vegetarian since 2004 and more recently raw vegan since 2011 when I moved to beautiful, sunny Queensland to live with my partner who is a Raw Food Chef and Digestive Health Specialist. I've just set up a new FB page and blog on Blogger called "rawvegansover60" with the purpose of encouraging more mature members of this global world to rectify health problems and help heal the planet by choosing a plant-based lifestyle. I'll be sharing tips from this site with my followers :)
Cascadian01/08/2014 19:19:13
Wow! More posts already! Welcome Rosalie & Claire.
Cascadian01/08/2014 19:26:06
Before I forget, I also want to welcome and encourage all of you to visit the HappyCow chat room! It's a great way to connect with friendly Veg*n folks from around the world:

I hope to chat with you soon and often!

VeggiePirate01/09/2014 08:19:07
I'm a life-long vegetarian, and I have been becoming more raw vegan over the past few years. I live on a small island, and the veggie selection in the local stores is not very good. I'm starting to garden in raised beds so I can take advantage of the year-long growing season! I am here to connect with a like-minded community & to share recipes and more.
Cascadian01/09/2014 10:33:10
Hello and Welcome Pirate!
blackcat18201/13/2014 11:07:21
Hi all! I was veggie for 20 years before going vegan last May, have used this website a lot over the last few months and decided to join so I can write reviews and hopefully help other people find cool places to eat/shop :-) I live in North Wales in the UK, unfortunately it's not the most vegan friendly place so I always look forward to going to places that have more choice for eating out!
Cascadian01/13/2014 13:44:23
Hello & Welcome blackcat182!

Brok O. Lee01/17/2014 05:52:15
Hi Trinity! I hope to visit England someday. :)

Hi Cascadian! That's so cool that you know about Israel. Actually, I'm not such a felafel lover. If you need to know about felafel I will ask my sons. To me, Sheinkin is great for amazing fresh juices, and the Orna V'Ella cafe which is vegan friendly. Veganism has had a huge surge in Israel, especially Tel Aviv in the last couple of years.

I hope to get to Portland someday! :)
Cascadian01/17/2014 12:50:04
I hope that you do get to visit Portland, it is a very nice and extremely vegan-friendly city in a wonderful region that just might be the best part of the world for vegans! :-)

It's always nice to see Veganism growing and even more impressive when it's happening so strongly, in a comparatively small country!
pincopallino01/24/2014 17:22:15
After using this site a few times to find a place to eat during my trips, I decided to join to update infos about a restaurant. Hope to contribute more in the future.
I stopped eating meat in 1986, fish in 1993, dairies and eggs have been very occasional since I gave up meat, before completely avoiding them from 2010.
I'm life member of the IVU as well as regional delegate of the French Vegetarian Association. I regularly give talks on nutrition for the general public and occasionally also vegan cooking classes.
Cascadian01/24/2014 19:54:08
Bienvenue à HappyCow pinco!

Perhaps you would be so kind as to add French VegFest's & other végétalien events to the events calendar here? It would be much appreciated!
AmberMalave01/25/2014 16:31:27
Hello! I am Amber, I am 21 years of age from new jersey usa i have been vegetarian for 8 years and vegan for only 2 days now so i decided to join this site
Cascadian01/25/2014 20:27:31
Welcome Amber! It's been nice chatting with you in the HappyCow chat room.
claranson02/12/2014 06:47:20
Hey everyone!
I'm Clara and I've been an on and off vegetarian for almost 7 years now. Very ambiguos on the topic, I do agree with all the moral arguments, but allow myself the occasional slip. Because a like to say better 90% vegetarian than no vegetarian at all. Maybe hanging around here will give me a push for the lacking 10 percent... ;)
Rio9302/12/2014 10:22:43
Hey :)

I'm Rio from North Wales, UK but currently living in Liverpool, UK for university :)

I've been a vegan for 3 and a half years and a vegetarian for eleven! Best two decisions of my life and I'm so glad that my mum allowed me to veggie at a young age; most parents would think it was unhealthy and say no.

I joined Happycow partly to mix with likeminded people. I'm a lonely vegan with no vegan friends haha it's starting to take it's toll on me!

So feel free to say hello if you like :)

Cascadian02/12/2014 11:53:29
Hello and Welcome Rio93!
Come visit with us in chat - lots of Vegans from around the world, including many from the UK!
IGrowKale02/19/2014 22:02:21
Hello everyone! I have been vegan for about 9 years and eating gluten-free for the past 6 years or so (allergies). I live in Vancouver, BC Canada and I run a vegan household and taken care of my garden during the season.
Cascadian02/20/2014 18:14:31
Hello and Welcome to HappyCow IGrowKale!

I saw your other post: Best wishes on finding a vegan housemate. Sadly there is very little chance of my being up able to live up there for any length of time with immigration policies being as they are...

That said, Commercial Drive is my main hang-out whenever I make it up to Vancouver so maybe I'll see you around up there sometime!

Are you from BC originally?
Cosimo04/19/2014 14:56:41
Hi all,

I just visited this website for the first time and I already found some useful tips and information.

I am Cosimo, 30 y.o. from Italy, vegan since March.
Cascadian04/19/2014 15:24:41
Hello & Welcome Cosimo!
What part of Italia are you from? What inspired you to become Vegan?
JckLyzz04/20/2014 05:36:54
Hi! I'm Steven from Indonesia. I've been vegetarian since November last year and already began to be 80 20 raw vegan from the start of this month. It's kinda hard at times, but it's becoming better lately. :) Nice to meet you.
Cascadian04/20/2014 10:35:23
Hello & Welcome Steven! :-)
Cosimo04/23/2014 13:13:11
Hi Cascadian, thanks! I've become vegan because lately I have read many articles about food industry and production processes and I discovered that I ate more poison than food...
martinelisa04/23/2014 18:33:24
Hello everyone! My name is Martine Lisa I've been vegetarian since 2008. I'm interested in becoming a vegan someday. I did a search and I'm the only member listed in my area within 25 miles and only one other member within 50 miles :( I hope to meet some other like minded people on this website and know that I'm not alone in my vegetarian quest :)
Cascadian04/23/2014 20:49:54
Hello and Welcome Martine Lisa!

Your region is on actually my short list of places to visit. I made it to Minneapolis last year but that was pretty much it for MN...

As the Iron Range & north-eastern MN doesn't have a lot of folks to start with, it looks like you may just have to work harder on recruiting folks to become veg*n!

Have you been in touch with any MN based veg*n groups? Even if they aren't active in your area, they are likely your best resources for finding folks who are. The Twin Cities VegFest folks or this meet-up group seem like good people to check in with, if you haven't already.

While they aren't in your state, the Northern Vegans group of U.P. Michigan *can* relate to being veg*n in small rural towns of the upper midwest!

Also, come visit us in the HappyCow chat room to you can connect with veg folks worldwide! :-)
KatPati8604/24/2014 08:05:14
I am a 28 year old who's been vegetarian (but sometimes I eat seafood and red food colouring) since December 2007. I figured that if I stopped eating meat then there's more meat for a meat lover. But I feel happier not eating it (no gristle in vego foods for instance)
Cascadian04/24/2014 09:17:53
Hello & Welcome Kat!
I hear great things about Melbourne - it sounds like it just might be the most Vegan-friendly city in all of the Southern Hemisphere! :-)
gillbean4004/25/2014 00:52:16
Hi, Gillian here. I live in the South East of Ireland and have been vegan for just over a month now. I was vegetarian for 15yrs but had a major lapse on meat for 5 years but struggled with just feeling wrong eating meat. I decided to go vegan as I couldn't see how I could give up meat without giving up dairy too. Feel fantastic since and have noticed only positive changes in myself.
Cascadian04/25/2014 11:55:27
Hello & Welcome back to Vego-land Gillian!

Start by setting small, realistic goals: like being Vegan for at least 15 years! :-)
LauraBUnata05/24/2014 08:24:31
Hello! My name is Laura and I am from Texas. I have been Vegetarian/Vegan for 5 months now, and I have noticed a change in how I feel. I do seem to have more energy and I just feel better about myself. I would like to meet others who are interested in a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and learn more about it.
irondiets05/25/2014 17:22:50
Hello all. I'm not actually a vegan myself, but I am a nutritionist and do help people plan diets and meals that are vegan. I'm always interested in good vegan recipes and ideas to share with others.
Cascadian05/26/2014 11:52:12
Hello & Welcome Laura & "iron".

Hello & Thank you for your introduction Donny! :)
SkyandFreedom05/27/2014 10:19:52
Hi everyone, I've been a vegetarian for 27 years and am now trying to progress to vegan. I live in the UK and don't know anyone else who shares this choice, so it's a bit of tough road. Stil at least on here I don't feel like the odd one out for a change !
Cascadian05/27/2014 11:39:56
Hello Sky!

You're making a great switch by becoming Vegan & happily, the UK is an excellent place for meeting other Vegans as there are tons of us there!

Have you checked out these folks?

Also, The Vegan Society has an extensive list of local contacts. Pick one or a few of the people closest to you to contact & they should be able to help you connect with other local Vegans, resources, events etc!

Best wishes!
SkyandFreedom05/28/2014 06:38:34
Thanks Cascadian. You say there are loads of vegans in the UK and there may well be, but I live in a tiny little town where people still think your a bit odd if a vegetarian! So now I'm moving into veganism, if I so much as even mention it in passing or ask about products in shops etc., I just get met with a blank stare or laughed at, or some ridiculous comment - seriously ! Thankfully I've just had a quick look on that contact list you gave me, and there is actually one very local to me, so looks like that's could really help me. Thankyou.
Cascadian05/28/2014 11:49:16
No worries! I'm glad to hear that you found a local contact and I hope that they prove helpful.

Also, if there is some rare or hard to find item or brand that you'd like, have you considered ordering online? Here's one of the many companies that offers a wide selection of Vegan products for sale:
SoyaSharon05/29/2014 06:59:19

Hello there. I'm Sharon, 15 years old and I've been vegetarian for... 6 hours now. I don't eat dairy either. Its niceto be on here and get a few recipies for my packed lunch. I'm the only vegetarian I know (well, two in my class but we don't talk) so its nice to see other vegans/vegetarains and not feel so weird.
Cascadian05/29/2014 09:23:18
Hello & Welcome Sharon!
You're off to a great start. There is a world full of us Vegans & Vegetarians - you just added one more. :-)
RubiksCubed06/02/2014 20:52:13
Though not vegan or vegetarian yet, I plan to go vegan once I move into a place of my own in July. I really don't have a choice but to eat dairy and other products because I don't have money for food and all my mother (whom I currently live with) really buys is pizza, chocolate, potato chips, and soda. My choice to go vegan is more for health reasons than anything. I am sick a lot from the diet that I have little choice but to consume, and also am about 80 pounds (~36kg) overweight. I will likely stay on the diet as well once I get healthier.
I am starting a blog once I move called A Year of Vegan. I was planing on posting at least once or twice a week, if not daily, with health updates, food I made, etc. But like I mentioned, the vegan diet will likely turn into a life-long thing for me
Sorry for the long rant.
Sawyer_Sauce06/04/2014 10:10:58
Hi! I'm Sawyer and I'm vegan. I'm relatively new to this lifestyle (it's my first month of full-time commitment) so I have a lot of things to learn. I also have an endocrine disorder called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). My cat is a tuxedo kitty and his name is Oreo
Cascadian06/04/2014 11:12:08
Hello & Welcome Rubiks & Sawyer.

Hello from Glasgow, Scotland! My name is Gill I am a vegetarian who is slowly becoming vegan. I recently went on holiday to Barcelona, and used your wonderful app to find incredible places to eat. We are planning to base our next holiday on the recommendations on this site! Keep up the good work everyone :)

Hello Team I'm Alyssa brown and as of august It will mark my Fourth year anniversary as a vegan!
it's a pleasure to meet all of you.
ahimsa32fa07/08/2014 09:16:16
Congrats on your anniversary! Choosing the vegan lifestyle was the smartest thing I've done in my 71 years.
AlyssaBrown07/08/2014 09:29:17
Thank you Ahmisa, don't worry sweetheart you are still very young and you have a lot of life ahead especially as a vegan.
PETANEV07/29/2014 06:59:40
Hello I've been eating Lacto-ovo vegetarian diet for 3 days. I am looking forward to making it permanent. If you want to know more about me, read my profile.
xvanishingbirdx08/22/2014 17:53:41
Hi! I was a vegetarian for many years until a dairy allergy (NOT an intolerance!) put me in the ER. I have severe food allergies (as in having to carry two Epi-pens) to major food groups: Dairy, dairy by-products, eggs, seafood, and shellfish. So, by sheer default of my immune system, I eat vegan 99.9% of the time. I also have to source my prescription medications and vitamins so I don't suddenly drop dead from cross-contamination or undisclosed ingredients.

I'm also a grad student and am quite possibly the only vegan, straight edge kid in this town.

Hi, I'm Dee. Been Vegetarian for 30 years and recently went Vegan. I live in Shropshire Uk, but am open to chatting with Vegetarians and Vegans Worldwide, to encourage each other and Share info, and maybe have a laugh or two! Dee :)
english_history_man09/19/2014 23:41:39
Hi - I'm Alan, English, currently located in the North East. Vegetarian for 20+ years. Alcohol / smoke / drug free too, so I'm a hit at parties :). Always happy to connect with people who have an original take on things, which is what drew me here in the first place. I don't eat out much, finding it easier to control what I eat if I do all my own cooking - though Newcastle is not badly served for options, despite its reputation as a hard-drinking, pie-munching, party town.
Tigra22009/20/2014 11:26:38
Hi y'all! I'm Tiggy. I'm from St. Louis, MO, but I now reside in Scottsdale, AZ. My journey to veganism was slow. I gave up pork when before I was 10 yo. Then I stopped eating beef at 19yo. Finally went vegan and have been for @ 8 yrs now. I was straight edge before I knew what xedge meant. ;) Love chatting with veg*ns all over the world!
ahimsa32fa09/21/2014 05:54:42

I can relate to the pork thing!

When I was a child we ate lots of Campbell's Pork & Beans. I loved the beans, but eating those chunks of pork fat always awoke my gag reflex. Sadly, my father insisted that I eat the pork. It made mealtime miserable for me.

Took me 33 years to step away from meat altogether and another ten to see the light on dairy products, in 1985!
Tigra22009/21/2014 09:15:23
Ahimsa32fa, yes! On my end, it was pork fried rice, ham sandwiches, and pork chops, which my southern-loving family loved to feed me. After Charlotte's Web, there was no way I was eating Wilbur! ;)
piotr11109/21/2014 09:29:51
I'm 19 and vegetarian for one year. I live in a small city, Kielce in Poland - definitely not veggie-friendly country.
I am pigs lover but I know all animals deserve to live, not only the ones I love so I don't eat them. I'm sentiocentrist.
wedigfood10/31/2014 12:55:06
Hi, I’m Steve, been a working my way up to being a vegan for 35 years, finally stopped eating and using animal products last year. First, mainly for health reasons, then for animal rights and environmentalism. Have become so enthusiastic that I created a website,, to become throughly involved in the “movement”, see it as part of my involvement with Buddhism. Was shocked by the far reaching and horrible effect the non-vegan food industry has on our planet.
Cascadian10/31/2014 18:57:50
Hello and Welcome to all of you new folks! :-)
J and J
J and J11/01/2014 22:12:43
Hi! Just saw this thread! We are vegans for almost four years now and have been vegetarian for 10 and 15 years. We're vegans for all reasons. We were already vegetarian for the animals and the environment, and actually viewing Forks Over Knives made us really consider why we were still eating eggs and cheese, we we gave that up overnight and life just got brighter and brighter, more and more full of love and peace! We're 100% on board! :) Now we couldn't imagine not being vegan, because it's brought us such an incredible connection with animals, it's brought us to learn new cuisines and become much better at cooking and creating new dishes, and it's brought us improved health and spiritual well-being. It's the most inspiring and empowering lifestyle change! We're so glad everyone's here giving everyone else good advice on good vegan eats throughout the globe! Love it! :)
JoH11/22/2014 09:26:31
Just introducing myself, I'm Jo, from London, I've been vegetarian for 31 years, I brought up my son as a vegetarian and I have been vegan for one month and have never ever felt better or healthier. I would really love to chat to likeminded people.
ahimsa32fa11/22/2014 13:32:39

I know Great Britain was an empire like the US is now, but you Brits also abolished slavery long before the US and the animal rights movement likely began there with Henry Salt's book, "Animals Rights" over a century ago.
FiorellaVi11/22/2014 16:24:42
Hi everybody! I'm so happy to find all you guys that share your stories so I thought I'd share my short one. I've been vegan for 5 months now, it feels like it's a no-brainer really, after watching "earthlings" and listening to Gary Youroski I couldn't look at meat and dairy in the same way anymore. I'm swedish but live in England now and I've found it to be a reasonable place to be a vegan. Obviously there are always gonna be the smart guys that try to put you down but it's all about remembering the real reasons why you're vegan.

Exept for being a vegan full time now :P, I like spending my time travelling, reading books and watching youtube oddly enough. I actually have my own channel where I used to share my recipes, but now that I'm vegan I'm kinda turning it into a vegan cooking channel, here's the address if you're bored one day youtube/fiorellascooking

Can't wait to join in the discussions and learn more about you guys :)
