Dealing With Adveristy Hello all, I'm new to the Happy Cow forums but a long time advocate of cruelty free living and the plant based diet. Although I have progressed from strict vegetarian to completely vegan for over half my life, I have rarely had major issues with my family in regards to my life choices. I've been fortunate that they support my decisions, although they do all still consume animal products regularly. I posted a picture today on Instagram - it was a photo of a slaughterhouse worker with the caption, "You're an animal lover? That must be why you pay someone else to do the dirty work" - alluding to the fact that I believe many meat eaters (including myself, pre-vegan) are disconnected to the suffering that animals face in slaughterhouses. I believe many meat eaters would probably not be willing to slaughter their own food or witness what actually happens to the animals before it reaches their plate. Although in retrospect I do think the photo was a very extreme representation of this belief, right after I posted it, a very close family member became very angry and defensive with me, stating that the photo offended her deeply and that she felt that I was alienating myself from those who care about me by expressing these views on social media. I can definitely see where she's coming from, but my beliefs about slaughter remain the same. I felt bad for what I posted and the fact that it upset her. I want to be as active in animal welfare as possible, and although I agree that the photo I posted today was probably a little overboard, I'm not really sure how to go about dealing with differences in opinion with people I'm close with. It's hard to be open minded to any meat eating when I am this invested in animal welfare. Long post, I'm sorry. But can anyone shed some light? Did I really screw up? Thanks so much. Deceptive "cruelty free" product labels Be careful of deception when shopping for cruelty free products. Ive been advised by the "Choose Cruelty Free" organisation Australia that any company can state on their packaging that they dont test on animals regardless if its true or not. There is no law against it. I know....pathetic isnt it?!! Only way to be 100% sure is to buy from companies endorsed by CCF as they are completely thorough and strict with who they allow on their list. They told me that even PETAs list is not reliable as they are very lax with verifying the companies on their list are indeed cruelty free (including suppliers, ingredients etc) In saying this its still better to choose from PETAs list than no list at all. Im not aware of the endorsement procedures of other cruelty free lists but you may want to check ones you are using to ensure their process is up to scratch. I shop strictly from the CCF list now. It narrows down selection a lot but ld rather have less selection and be sure lm not hurting our furry friends. Heres the CCF list. Download the app or ask them to send you their printed list. You can contact them with queries about any products. They are so keen to help consumers trying to do the right thing. www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au/cruelty-f... Post Date: 12/02/16, Replies: 0

Do Animals Matter in Africa? World Animal Day was on the 4th October 2014 - FollowTheSpoor was there and we spoke to a few participants who said that Animals Matter to Africa! We raised the issue of there being this general perception, right or wrong, that only white people in Africa care about animals. Watch the video below and tell us what you think. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYHK-6mi9ZM Regards, FollowTheSpoor www.youtube.com/followthespoor Post Date: 10/13/14, Replies: 2
Do saved sheep still get sheared? When I became vegan I really only focused on food. I didn't buy clothes that much and when I did I only bought cotton anyway, just as a personal preference aside from animal rights. I was confronted recently about some type of conscious wool, claim being that the sheep are not used for food and are on kind farms but still get sheared. I didn't know if that was a gimmick so it made me wonder: Do sheep that go to farms after being saved, like places like Farm Sanctuary still shear their sheep? I know hardly anything about the creatures, so people who have actual experience with them in person please feel free to reply as to your thoughts. Post Date: 03/15/09, Replies: 4
Does all life matter? Hello everyone! I wanted to share something that I wrote with you all, but I don't know if it is appropriate to just paste the whole thing here, so I just pasted an excerpt from it. It has to do with the value that we as humans place on human life versus animal life. In my opinion, human life is more valuable, and that is because I believe that humans were made by God in the image of God. But to take that and then automatically reduce the value of animal life as drastically as we do today is insane! I believe God created all life and everything else and if the Bible has any truth to it then the first people were vegan! Or at the very least that story was a metaphor that describes God's will for us - which included not eating animals! I hold all life in high regard and while it wasn't the reason I became vegan, it is one of the major reasons why I remain one. I learned most of what I know about the "factory farming" industry after I became a vegan, and thankfully I did learn what I know now because every time I think it would just be easier to go back to my old way of eating, I am reminded of the whole process of how those meat products got onto that supermarket shelf, and it disgusts me to the point that I couldn't keep down the food if I did eat it. But anyway, please read this excerpt and then copy and paste the link below it to read the whole thing. Then, please let me know what you think or if you think I should make any revisions to it! I want to use this as a way to open people's eyes to the reality that animals are literally tortured for no good reason. Without further ado... Here it is: "She was tortured..." This was her first pregnancy. The baby was due to be born in just one more week, but she could feel that it would probably be born before that week was up. She had never known the joys of motherhood before but she wasn't worried because that came naturally to her kind. She jumped a bit as she heard someone yell from outside. Probably just the farmer again. Things around the farm had been intense lately. Mr. Johnson, the farmer, seemed frustrated frequently and all of the animals were in a state of heightened agitation. Mr. Johnson was an odd man, she thought. He didn't seem like the type to be a farmer, but appearances can be deceiving, she supposed. He was about 45 years old, tall and handsome for a man, if one was into that sort of thing, and seemed far more regal than the other farmers that she had seen. The calming breeze, the gray clouds floating ever so fluidly by and the smell that sung of rain didn't do much to set anyone at ease. Not at this farm, at least. Not even Mr. Johnson. It was amidst this agitation that she tried to begin her afternoon meal. She stood there staring at her food, unable to eat, as the moments ticked by. As the wind picked up outside and blew through the door with an eery whistle she began to realize why her food didn't look appetizing at all. Her heart began to race uncontrollably. Her body tensed as her stomach began to cramp, causing her more pain than she'd ever felt before. Her baby was coming. ----Please copy the URL below into your URL bar above to read the whole story!!---- www.intangibl3.org/#!She-was-tortured/c1u9t/573c6e330cf25680fa5787ae Post Date: 05/20/16, Replies: 1
Does logic prevail? Please help me with this discussion. I am trying to learn about how a vegan applies logic to their way of life. I am hoping the community will send me some answers with out bitter vitriol. This question is posed with no agenda other than discovery. If vegans are opposed to animal abuse, it would follow logically that they are also opposed to abortion. Is this true? Are vegans also against abortion. If not, please help me understand your logic. Thanks. Post Date: 06/21/14, Replies: 12
Does Vegetarianism Promote Animal Welfare? A gentleman (but not a gentle man) attending therapy sessions for anger management proudly declared to the group: "I'm a changed man. I've now dedicated my life to promoting non-violence against women!" (A round of applause followed). "But how are you going about this?" the group leader enquired. "Steadfastly," he replied, adding "I have four girlfriends and now I only beat three of them." I invite vegetarians to state their case below as to how vegetarianism promotes animal welfare. I won't personally challenge your rationale but any other forum contributors can. To think is usually more fruitful than to argue. Post Date: 01/12/13, Replies: 0
Dog catching: Are they still using poles? Here in Delhi the Worldly Wags team sees lots of dog catching; for rescues, vaccinations, or sterilizations. Most often, organizations are using poles with a noose to catch the dog, and frequently injuring the dog (further) in the process, whether by choking, spinal damage, or cutting. In India there is starting to be a movement towards catching dogs with nets, such as with Animal Aid Unlimited and Help in Suffering. I was wondering, do dog catchers still use the pole and noose to catch dogs where you live? Let me know where you are and what you have seen! www.worldlywags.com Post Date: 06/18/14, Replies: 4

Dog rights; boycott Home Depot?? Recently I have been fuming about an issue and thinking of a possible solution. My solution is to try to concoct a grassroots boycott of Home Depot. I have no idea how to manifest this, other than by throwing it out here to see if there'd be any momentum for the idea. The problem is Home Depot is owned by Arthur Blank, who also owns the Atlanta Falcons (NFL football). The face of his franchise is Michael Vick, whose house in VA was just raided by cops for a drug bust but they found a huge dog-fighting training center there. This is one of the ugliest things any human being can do, of course. The NFL, even with its new supposed crackdown on off-field incidents is not scrutinizing Vick and seem to be content to allow him to skate with this behavior. The pressure therefore as a consumer could be to boycott Blank's Home Depots. Even though often these types of activities are less than fruitful, often raising more bark than bite, awareness is never a bad thing. Anyhow, if nothing else, this bothers me and I figured I'd throw it out there. Peace Post Date: 08/09/08, Replies: 32

Duck's liver & heart in "Oscillococcinum"! The following article(www.santenatureinnovation.com/quels-problemes-de-sante/autres/oscillococcinum-excusez-moi-mais-jai-un-probleme/)shocked me for another reason than Oscillococcinum's high cost or possible "placebo effect": the composition of the medicine evokes "duck's liver & heart hydrolyzing". It seems to me even more gruesome to kill ducks to cure flu symptoms, than to eat them! And if efficiency isn't even demonstrated, it's definitely scandalous! Post Date: 06/15/13, Replies: 0
Dutch shops ban 'anaemic veal' ....... Full article here - http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/269237 Dutch shops ban 'anaemic veal' over animal rights concerns By Adriana Stuijt. Excerpts - + Within six months of an animal-welfare group launching a peaceful, company-targetted campaign against 'pale veal' - produced by keeping male calves penned up, fed on low-iron milk diets -- nearly all the Dutch supermarkets have stopped selling it. Animal-rights group Wakker Dier in The Netherlands -- which country is also Europe's largest veal-producers with 1,5million veal calves a year -- says they launched the campaign urging consumers not to buy this veal 'because pale veal is raised by keeping the calves deliberately ill, fed on a low-iron milk diet and kept stabled in small cages. They never see the light of day'... + . . + Wakker Dier says these animals are "always sick and listless, never get to run around in green fields, never drink from their mothers for longer than a week, always live in bleak stables and spend a very miserable, all too brief life." + . . . . . . . Earthlings... To Watch or Not to Watch? So I have tried to shun Earthlings for an entire year now because I know that it would emotionally scar myself to the point of where i will most likely perceive every omnivore as 'evil' (not the greatest mentality to have, but i'm working on it!) But anyways, my logic for not watching Earthlings was 'I'm already vegan, and doing everything I can to not support the meat & dairy industry, so why torture myself by watching it?' But then recently it occurred to me that perhaps I'm being selfish in thinking that. A strong part of me believes that we all owe it to these animals to at least witness the pain they physically endure every single second of their lives. Consequently, I am strongly considering forcing myself to watch Earthlings, in its entirety. No closing my eyes, or looking away, but to intently watch and process the exact torturous procedures these animals undergo. I feel like the only con is that it will negatively affect me psychologically... and the pros are: it will definitely make my ethical stance even stronger, educate me on the practices of factory farms visually and possibly motivate me further to speak up to people. Anyone else feel this way? Or maybe even the contradictory? Post Date: 07/26/15, Replies: 7
Egg laying hen welfare in UK Hello! My name is Claudia and I am currently interested in the public perceptions of welfare in egg laying hens in the UK for my final year dissertation at the Royal Veterinary College in London. I would like to see whether public expectations are being met with respect to the current welfare standards. There are no right or wrong answers - I am just interested in your views and I would be very grateful if you could complete my survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BYBB2Y7 Anyone is welcome to participate! You do not have to consume eggs or reside in UK. I would like to thank you again for your time in advance and for your interest in this project. Post Date: 12/16/16, Replies: 0

EU caves in to animal sacrifice lobby Forwarded from Scotland for Animals. EU ministers yesterday scrapped legislation for compulsory labelling of halal and kosher meat. This latest episode in grovelling by politicians to the animal sacrifice industry comes as the so called Equality and Human Rights Commission has replied to Scotland for Animals stating that in their opinion 'religious communities' have the right to torture animals in the name of god but you haven't the right to know when you're buying it or being forced to take part in their sick rituals. We're currently seeking legal advice and will carry on with our campaign to bring this national scandal to an end. Euthanized pets re-entering the US as food "Pentobarbital flavored seafood"! . "Lassie flavored enhanced seafood snacks"! . Another strong, strong reason for Americans to go vegan! . Share this with your fish addicted friends! . .................................................. . From - www.allaboutfeed.net Pet meal backfires in shrimp 19 NOV 2007 With food security becoming a major issue, the problem of global protein scarcity is leading to innovations that may not always fully embrace ingredient integrity. The use of rendered pets disposed of by animal shelters in the US and used in shrimp feed in parts of Asia is one such case. According to the National Animal Control Association (USA) over 5.2 million dogs and cats from animal shelters and pounds are put down each year. Most of those have been humanly killed with pentobarbital. The remains are sent to rendering facilities Ann Martin, author of Food Pets Die For, has been investigating the multi-billion-dollar, commercial pet food industry since 1990. She said one large rendering plant in California, West Coast Rendering, renders most of the animals from shelters in California. Baker Commodities, Washington State, also renders dogs and cats in their state. A few years ago these rendered dogs and cats were being sent to pet food companies and used in pet foods (meat meal). Because of the huge outcry the rendering companies have chosen another route for the disposal of these animals. Martin pointed out that the drug used to euthanize these pets withstands the rendering process without degrading. Most of this rendered material is now going to China, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan according to Martin, where it is used as a protein source for fish and shrimp food. These fish are than sent back to the US and sold to brokers all over the country. According to one report the FDA finally blocked the sale of five species of farm-raised seafood from China because of repeated instances of contamination from unapproved animal drugs and food additives. She feels that it's extremely doubtful if the FDA tested these fish for levels of pentobarbital. In fact Martin said that the FDA inspected only 0.59% of the seafood imported to the US in 2006, this, given the fact that the demand for seafood has grown tremendously in the last five or six years. . . .
