| 'Rescued' big cats now in zoos? Free Diego The Mexican Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) recently seized 3 abused and neglected big cats - Diego, Albert and Guacho - from their so-called caretakers. Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, USA has agreed to provide a safe haven for these cats and to cover all costs of transportation, but Mexican authorities have been reluctant to cooperate. In the mean time Diego, Albert and Guacho live in different zoos across the country. Unfortunately zoos exist for the entertainment of people and not for the well-being of animals, who are caged and exploited for profit. Free Diego, Albert and Guacho by sending an email to PROFEPA and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources at 3dayz.com/diego-albert-and-guacho Important: for reasons beyond our control the emails to PROFEPA take up to a minute to send. Please be patient and click 'Send' only once when sending a protest mail. Post Date: 08/26/12, Replies: 1 | ||

| "A Planet fo rthe Taking" One of, if not the most watched David Suzuki series was "A Planet for the Taking", which aired in 1985. It's been extremely hard to find for many years...unlike all of Suzuki's other shows. It was obviously very unpopular among those who profit from the abuse and killing of non-human animals. Here's the good news! You can actually watch 6 of the 8 episodes on Youtube! If you haven't seen it I hope you'll take advantage...it may not be available on Youtube for very long. | "Horse meat scandal" I turned on the news which I never usually do. And I came across people absolutly furious about their beef burgers being "contaminated" with horse meat. I rang up my mum to ask what she thought of it (she eats meat) and she said it was disgusting, the same person who when I said she cared more about some animals than others, waived my accusation away. So does that mean she does not think that beef does not come from cow? I turned vegan about a year a go, and was vegetarian a few years before that. But even before all that, I knew that life was life and I can't see how people can't, or choose to block it out. "Horse meat scandal"? ever heard of the meat scandal? Anyone care to comment with ideas on how to open the eyes of people such as my mother? Or just share similar experiences? Melanie Joy calls it Carnism, but I can't figure out how to convice others from her video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vWbV9FPo_Q Post Date: 03/21/13, Replies: 3 | ||
| "Reality TV" - hidden Circus Abuse http://www.ad-international.org/animals_in_entertainment/go.php?id=1252&ssi=10 Has anyone seen this show? Is it still going? "Cable station Turner Network Television (TNT) has announced plans to produce a reality show titled "The Greatest Show On Earth" and will feature known animal abusers Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. This "reality" show – essentially an hour-long commercial for Ringling Brothers – will certainly not feature the reality of what animals in traveling circuses endure. The truth is so disguised that it has been exposed to the public only through intense undercover investigations. Viewers surely won't see the behind-the-scenes abuse of elephants, tigers, horses and other animals." More lies to abuse huh?... Theres some links at the bottom and addresses so you can let them know this is not right and make it clear its a disgrace to hide the fact that animals are suffering. How annoying they air something like this and totally HIDE the real reality of what happens behind the scenes. Sick. "Reality show" my a**!! Post Date: 09/06/08, Replies: 1 | ||

| "Vegetarians" and animal rights I wondering if Vegetarians actually decided to go vegetarian for animal rights, because dairy and eggs still contribute to the enslavement and exploitation of animals. Before I went Vegan I was vegetarian more for the environments reasons than any other, but I have recently come across some REALLY obnoxious vegetarians at my high school who feel exceptionally morally superior because THEY have discovered meat is murder. I want to tell them that dairy is rape but whenever I do that it's never ended well..... So have any vegetarians made the switch for animal rights and felt that it was enough? | “Animal Welfare Approved” Beef! Dark humor. If only this was just a joke... Every single day *millions* of individuals, millions of PEOPLE whose sole crime was being unfortunate enough to not have been born human are *murdered* after having first been enslaved, tortured, raped. There is no excuse for this. It isn't about survival or necessity. While we may not be able to make all of this horror and injustice stop right away, *all* of us can immediately take major steps towards righting these wrongs. To start: Go Vegan Now. Animal Liberation is the only "humane" option. http://www.theonion.com/articles/we-raise-all-our-beef-humanely-on-open-pasture-and,30983/ Post Date: 06/21/14, Replies: 6 | ||
| “Heaven is open to all creatures” Pope He also said, ““The vocation of being a ‘protector,’ however, is not just something involving us Christians alone; it also has a prior dimension which is simply human, involving everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as St. Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God’s creatures and respecting the environment in which we live." I am Buddhist and I don’t believe in God, I see all “creatures” as sentient beings, although I found his words very inspiring and hope they might have a profound effect in changing the perspective of non-vegans regarding all animals. | 10 foods your dog should never eat Copied from an email doing the rounds. -------------------------------------- We all want what's best for our dog. With the newest reports about the proper diet for your dog, they should have carbohydrates, vegtables, etc., more and more dog owners are giving their dog table scraps without realizing that there are certain foods a dog should never have. Before you put your left-overs in your dog's bowl be sure to read the top ten foods they shouldn't eat. 1. Chocolate - To dogs, chocolate acts as a stimulant, making your dog's heartbeat accelerate or beat irregularly, leading to seizures and even cardiac arrest. To compound things further, it also acts as a severe diuretic, causing frequent urination, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. If you even suspect your dog has consumed chocolate, take him to an animal hospital immediately. 2. Grapes and Raisins - Grapes and raisins create havoc with your dog's kidneys and digestive system. What's worse is that the amount of grapes needed to cause problems can vary greatly among individual dogs. Symptoms include frequent urination, vomiting, and diarrhea. 3. Onions - Onions cause the breakdown of a dog's red blood cells, which deprives his cells of much-needed oxygen. If you're in the habit of feeding your dog table scraps, make sure the dish was not prepared with onions, as the effects can be cumulative over a period of time. Symptoms can vary greatly, ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to loss of appetite, fever, or exhaustion. 4. Macadamia Nuts - While the exact chemical compound is still unknown, even a small amount of macadamia nuts can cause fever, irregular heartbeat, seizures, or mild paralysis. 5. Alcoholic Beverages - Dogs' physiologies are not equipped to handle alcohol consumption. They are extremely susceptible to alcohol poisoning, and even small amounts can lead to digestive problems or even death. 6. Bread Dough - Because it is soft, dogs will often swallow the dough without chewing it. When the dough hits your dog's stomach, his body heat will cause the dough to rise inside his stomach. This rising action can cause bloating or vomiting. To compound things further, the rising action creates alcohol as a by-product, and your dog may experience the symptoms listed in the previous paragraph. 7. Caffeinated Beverages - Similar to the effects of chocolate, caffeine is a stimulant and can negatively impact your dog's heart rate, causing seizures or heart attacks. 8. Avocadoes- Avocadoes are toxic to many animals. The offensive chemical damages heart, lung, and other essential tissues. Be aware since guacamole's main ingredient is avocado, that you keep any such dips well out of your dog's reach. 9. Pitted Fruits - (Peaches, Pears, Cherries, and Apricots) The pits of these fruits contain small doses of cyanide, which can be fatal to smaller dogs. Also, if the pit is swallowed whole, it may become lodged in the intestinal tract, where the blockage will have to be surgically removed. 10. Raw Fish - Raw fish, especially salmon, can contain parasites, usually fluke larvae. The dog consumes the fish, and the larvae hatch in your dog's digestive tract, attaching themselves to his intestinal walls. Symptoms can take up to a week to exhibit and usually mimic other canine diseases, such as distemper or parvovirus. The hazard here is misdiagnosis by the veterinarian, leading to an improper or ineffective treatment. If you choose to feed your dog fish, be sure to cook it thoroughly to kill any bad critters that could be hiding inside. This is of vital information for your dog care. If you want your dog to have the proper diet, take a small amount of what your making before you add the onions and the extra spices and make him up his own little plate and add it with his dog food. Remember a good dog is a happy and healthy dog. Post Date: 01/23/11, Replies: 1 | ||
| 100 years old N.Y. prisoner - now set free Halu Japanese Restaurant & Grill Agrees to Release 20-Pound Crustacean Back Into the Sea For Immediate Release: February 20, 2009 Contact: Ashley Byrne 757-622-7382 New York -- Inspired by the story of George, a 20-pound lobster believed to be more than 100 years old who was liberated by PETA from Manhattan's City Crab and Seafood last month, Halu Japanese Restaurant & Grill has decided to release an ancient crustacean named Craig who is estimated to be about the same size and age. Halu was originally going to keep Craig on display but has had a change of heart and has agreed to have the lucky lobster driven to Maine, where he will be released back into the sea. PETA and Halu invite the media to cover the preparation of the lobster for transport: When: Friday, February 20 at 5 p.m. Where: Halu Japanese Restaurant & Grill, 7109 13th Ave. (between 71st and 72nd streets), Brooklyn The lobster will be driven to Maine tonight by Larry Fleming, owner of Manhattan vegan bakery Little Lad's. According to Dr. Jaren G. Horsley, an invertebrate zoologist, lobsters have a "sophisticated nervous system" and feel "a great deal of pain" when cut or cooked alive. And because lobsters do not enter a state of shock when they are hurt, they feel every moment of their slow, painful deaths when cooked in a pot of boiling water. Scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., have found that lobsters use complicated signals to establish social relationships and take long-distance seasonal journeys, often traveling more than 100 miles in a year. "Kudos to Halu for allowing Craig to live out the rest of his days in his native habitat," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "We hope that Craig's story will inspire people to realize that lobsters are not simply 'displays' or 'meals'--they are living, feeling animals with needs, just like all other animals." | 117,000 animal tests at Cambridge 117,000 animal tests at Cambridge http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/11/20/117-000-animal-tests-at-cambridge-115875-22726413/ 117,000 animal tests at Cambridge By Matt Roper 20/11/2010 Researchers at Cambridge University carried out more than 117,000 experiments on animals last year. Animals used included 103,580 mice, 35 monkeys and three horses. It was also revealed yesterday that 2,000 out of the 117,212 experiments were classed as the highest level of severity. Animal rights campaigners reacted with fury at the figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act. Andrew Tyler of Animal Aid said: "These animals are not reliable surrogates for human beings and we don't have the moral authority to inflict such torments. "These creatures aspire to something better than to be locked in a cage - whether i t 's a mouse or a monkey." A spokes-man for the British Union Against Vivisection claimed the university is hiding the facts about its animal testing. He said: "It receives huge amounts of public money for its work. It is high time it came clean about the research, so that students can make up their own minds." In 2001, campaigners released shocking details of experiments being performed on 400 marmosets over nine months. They alleged that scientists sawed open monkeys' skulls and inserted toxins to simulate Parkinson's Disease. The university refused to release precise details of tests carried out in 2009. But it is known that animals often end up dead. A university spokeswoman said testing could lead to improved treatment for diseases such as cancer, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and alzheimers. She added: "Without animal research, which is only used when there is no alternative, many treatments we take for granted today would not be possible." Post Date: 11/26/10, Replies: 0 | ||

| 1st week Oct - stop chicken torture in NYC A Wing & A Prayer - The Kapparot Chicken-Swinging Ritual Please Help! http://www.upc-online.org/kaparos/82208wingprayer.html "Kapparot is not consistent with Jewish teachings and law. Repentance and charity can be better accomplished by using money instead of a slaughtered chicken." – Former Israeli Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren Kapparot (kaparos), which means "atonements," is a custom preceding Yom Kippur – the Jewish Day of Atonement – in which chickens are ritually sacrificed by many Orthodox Hasidic observers. The observer "swings" the chicken, held by the legs or by pinning the bird's wings backward, around his or her head, while reciting a chant in a gesture of transferring one's sins of the past year onto the bird. The chicken is then slaughtered, and may or may not be given to the poor. Prior to the ceremony, the chickens are packed in crates, usually for days without food, water or shelter, and birds who were not used in the ritual have been found abandoned, dying in their crates, when the ceremony was over. Kapparot is not required by the Torah or the Talmud, and the kapparot "chicken swinging" ritual is not practiced by the larger Jewish community. Most Modern Orthodox Jews swing money for charity. However, thousands of chickens are used in New York City alone each year for this purpose. In 2005, for example, Time Out New York reported "hundreds of crates stacked high in an idling 16-wheeler," as the slaughter filled "Brooklyn streets with blood and feathers" and "children's screams" could be heard for blocks "mixing with the deafening" cries of the chickens. This year (2008), Yom Kippur is on October 8. This means that kapparot will be practiced in the first week of October. Please help us help the birds. What Can I Do? We're asking members of the Jewish community who care about animals: please write a letter to your local Jewish newspapers expressing your objection to the use of chickens for kapparot and urging that money be used instead. Ask them to do an article about kapparot that examines the ceremony from the standpoint of Jewish teachings that encourage compassion for animals. In addition, please ask the Rabbinical Council of America to advocate that kapparot be carried out with money instead of chickens. Respectfully request a reply. | A Dog Saves Another Dog Hit By A Car Well worth watching - open - http://www.sonnyradio.com/herodog.html - then play the video. . . This may be the most amazing animal video we have ever seen. It is truly heartwarming. The video is from a traffic camera overlooking the busy Costanera Norte freeway in Santiago, Chile. It shows a dog that has been hit by a car on a busy highway. Under these conditions, such an animal would not have a chance of being saved. Enter our compassionate hero... A truly amazing video captured from highway cameras shows a brave dog doing his best to save his pal. . . . | A Ratty Dilemma.... Hello People, So, I would like some help in figuring out my 'rat situation. Note: This is my pet rat, and not the family of rats living in my attic....(though I'm sure in a couple of months when they've chewed through the plasterboard and am holding my baby to hostage I may be back with another moral dilemma). First of all, let me give you some background. I bought Duncan, the fancy rat (breed type), just over a year ago. It was a whim, and a whim I regret now, though at the time I could of not possibly foreseen the future. I had landed in some [censored]ty part of England, had gone to the nearest pet shop, saw him there, looking very sporty and all, and thought, [censored] it, I'll have him. I had been travelling through Europe for quite some time, turning a coin, juggling, singing, eating fire, all that craic. Duncan lived mainly in my hoody, made great friends with my Malamute, Took, and seemed very happy. He had plenty of time to chill and sleep, run around, turn tricks was well fed.....He seemed intellectually and physically fulfilled, it was great. So, fastforward a bit....My (at the time) ex-girlfriend (now wife) had got pregnant (by me) and yeah, as you all may know yourselves, life changes. I came home (To Ireland), we set up home, my dog, her dog, our cat, my rat. Duncan got on well with everyone, including the cat (Muck, gaelige for Pig).....Everything was going sweet for months....then something switched in Muck's mind, and she decided she'd rather eat Duncan. Duncan did not take kindly to this, oh no he didn't, oh yes he did. He spent four days hiding in the fireplace (this was in winter and highly inconvenient).....eventually, covered in soot, he came skulking out, now armed with an incontinence problem (Duncan was always good about not excreting in my hoody, and before the Muck attack a specific corner of the house..), leaving trails of piss and little rat [censored] wherever he went. Fearing a split divide between the pet alliances in our house, I bought Duncan a nice big cage (Moral dilemma number one).....I let him out at night, and he has free run of the house.... The problem is now, our son is about to start crawling, we can't keep up with Duncan's trails of excrement (Our son will put ANYTHING in his mouth)....But I feel a surge of guilt whenever I see that cage. I am well aware of say the Rowland's model of the impartial position concerning animal ethics, and I can justify having pets, having dogs, and cats and whatever else, but giving them the best life I can. Duncan has not got this at the moment....His cage is cleaned every day, he has free time to roam (this may soon change), but he is not stimulated. I am just after building him a much bigger cage (around 4 by 6 foot), multi leveled, with lots of contraptions for him to have the craic in....I am also considering getting him a new rat friend (of course I then have two caged animals...) I have considered finding him a new home, but there's no promise that their might be anyone who treats him better than I do. So any advice will be listened too. Cheers, Sam P.S Sorry for typos, no time to edit! Post Date: 04/07/14, Replies: 0 | ||

So far, they've had the support of animal rights groups and of millions of compassionate people around the world, but now the same compassion and anger have resulted in a full-blooded indie rock song about innocent blood spilt on Canadian ice floes - The Hand Strikes Hard.
